I was wondering if the aircraft was one of the Canadian-built examples doing a check flight prior to being de-engined and shipped off to the UK? No evidence of any kind whatsoever to support this unlikely theory. 🙂
Its always great to see Hampden footage though.:D

Wasn’t it just the case that when the various specs were being written, .303 guns and ammunition were the most readily available? They did the job so why disrupt production by introducing different calibres?

Nah, I’m sure that most forumites would agree that nothing comes close to the perfectly formed Hawker Hurricane. :dev2:

remember that this aircrft would have to be permanently static! An airworthy reproduction could not be built this way.
Albemarles were. 😮 Don’t know if any of them were ever truly airworthy though. :dev2:

One could end up with a very strange looking beast if it were drawn from across the membership!
Wasn’t that one of the problems with the Albemarle – most of the work subcontracted out to organisations, each with very little experience in aircraft production, and each with their own idea of quality control?
Great idea though Cees. I’d love to see it happen.

Yup, thats the source. The book mentioned that initially, they didn’t have enough four-blade props to go round so some Halibags flew with a combination of three and four-bladers. Anyone have any photographic evidence of this?

I think that I read somewhere that the outboard Merlins on the Halifax were prone to play up until four bladed props were fitted. Can anyone elaborate?

Crikey! They’ve got a Beaufort. 😮 I must visit more often.
Cracking photos. 😀

Not a bomber, but the Westland Welkin had a 79 gal tank in the fuselage.

I think that the colour pic was taken by Charles Brown. If so, Hendon will have the negative. Getting a print from them is probably as easy as getting them to buy some light bulbs…

Same too for the Halifax and Hampden. I’ve no idea how often they were fitted though.

Can anyone name one?
Wellington. The Wimpy could be fitted with auxilliary tanks in the bomb bay.

Why on earth would they feel like that? They have only been custodians of the wreckage for 99.9% of the Lancaster’s life. :diablo:

Err, why on earth do we need to bring these parts back to the UK? The Lancaster is hardly an extinct type in the UK and Joe Public will probably just see the parts as a pile of scrap metal. I could think of many other projects more worthy of funding.

Didn’t the company also operate a flying training school in the run up to WW2?
