Stirlings were used extensively for mining so I doubt if the carriage of ordinance was a problem. Wasn’t it just the case that the Stirling was a dog of an aircraft with a poor record while in Bomber Command?

I would have thought that whoever was responsible for grabbing aircraft for Coastal Command service would have picked the best that was available. The Halifax, with it’s better performance and lesser complexity, was more capable than the Stirling.

I haven’t heard about the CC Halifax Merlin problems before. Is this why they stuck four-bladed props on them?

Last Varsitys left the RAF in 1976, the VC.10 came into service in the early 1960s.

The Varsity and VC.10 overlapped. I think that the FB.19 served with both the RFC and the RAF, finally disappearing in 1919.

What about Vickers? Can’t think of any period when they did not have something in service.

    Paul.

Did the Sea Fury have the same tailplane as the Tempest II? I’ve just measured the tailplane span of the Sea Fury from a plan (Aeroplane Monthly April 1986) and it comes out at 13′ 9″ – the same as the published figure for the Tempest II.

    Got your PM ;o)

    Paul,

The only info that I have been able to find is that the 5 bladed prop was a 12′ 9″ Rotol.

Air Britain also covered the Beaufort with their Beaufort File. Their older Whitley File could do with an update.

Lancaster ND784 was used to test the Armstrong Siddeley AWX. A picture of this aircraft with the engine mounted in the bomb bay can found further down the page that JonathanF linked to.

The Air Britain Lancaster File gives a date of 28.9.45 for the first flight of ND784 with this combination. Later, the aircraft went on to test the Mamba.

    Lancaster Engine testbed serials:

    R5849: Merlin testbed
    BT308: Metrovick F.2, FF 29.6.43
    FM209: Avro Orenda, FF13.7.50
LL735: Metrovick F.2/4 Beryl plus 3,750 lb ST F.2/4 in bomb bay during 1949
ND784: Armstrong Siddeley ASX in bomb bay, FF 28.9.45, later fitted with Mamba in nose, FF 21.10.47
    NG465: Rolls-Royce Dart, FF 10.10.47
    PP779: Rolls-Royce Merlins
    PP791: Rolls-Royce Merlins
RE137: AS Python mock-ups in outer nacelles
SW342: Mamba in nose, later fitted with Adder in tail, then Viper in tail
TW911: Pythons in outer nacelles, FF 3.1.49
