My very first flight was LGW-TFS in August 1981 on a new Laker A300. Throughout the eighties, I flew mostly British Airtours 737/Tristars but also some flights on Cal-Air Dc10, Mon B757 and BY B767. Most interesting flight was LJU-LHR with JAT in 1985. A/C should have been a B727 but they switched to a B707; still my only flight on this type.

Shamrock – why would they reduce routes to help them beat delays?

This is just a phase they are going through at MAN as no doubt one of their based aircraft has a ticky engine or something like that, that keeps causing trouble and needs sorting on a regular basis therefore causing delays.

Remember for every say 4/6 routes out of one airport operatings on a 3/4 times a week service this can be run by 1 aircraft and the reason they stagger the schedule is to allow for this one aircraft to run lots of return journeys maximising its effiency as its costs to have it resting on the ground anywhere it goes.

I think Shamrock was suggesting that BMIBaby reduce their no. of operating bases not routes. It’s logical that fewer bases could then possibly support more routes and hence more a/c at each base. If one a/c goes tech then a replacement a/c should be available sooner.(As opposed to waiting for one to position in from another airport). A good example being Jet2..they have 6-7 a/c based at LBA. I bet their knock-on delays are far less than BMIBaby. Anyone know by chance?

Great photos; I’ve been there twice. One of the best airports for photos imo. On my first trip in Nov 96; I saw 3 x Premiair DC10s and 5 x Condor B757s on the ramp at the same time..

A concrete tower is usually built using a process called “slip-forming”. There is a ring of shuttering which forms a mould for concrete to be poured into. Steel re-inforcing bars are used to make the structure more rigid. The shuttering is slowly raised vertically as the tower is built in stages.

Airtours/Mytravel have leased-in 2-4 x A320s for the past 4-5 years. Their bases have changed this year(EMA normally MYT a/c). In the past they have also operated from MME/LBA bases. I’ve got photos of both a/c at Humberside.

What a surprise; more new routes for Easyjet and none from East Midlands. Are they really interested in EMA?

A strange thought but isn’t the reason the A300s are going because of the ‘D’ check requirement?

Am I also right by saying the 10-30 is also due for ‘D’ at the end of the summer?

In other words, are they not swapping one cost for another? (With the added difference of 1 v 2 birds?)

I would guess that a DC10-30 is worth alot more than an A300B4 hence it is still viable to carry out a D-check on the DC10 whereas the costs could outweigh the value of the A300s?

Where is Jardines del Rey? Does it have another name?

Unusual to see Britannia operating flts to Bulgaria? I thought most flights are by Bulgarian carriers on TU154/A320.

I find it very strange that BA operate the LHR-MIA flts from T3 when all other flights operate from T1/T4??

I nearly always use http://www.expedia.co.uk. But http://www.traveljungle.co.uk will search expedia/travelocity/opodo/lastminute/most airlines and it suprises me how the fares can vary so much on the same flights sold by 2 competing travel sites.

I wouldn’t have too much confidence in Iberia ref. connecting flights. I flew MAN-BCN in April..2.5 hr delay(Fortunately I was only going to BCN but would certainly have missed onward flight). Then flew LIS-MAD in June..1.5 hr delay..fortunately BA held their B767 at MAD to wait for the @80 passengers connecting.

I flew on a FCA(then AMM) A321 in Premium class from EMA to ACE @2 years ago. The cost was £49 and worth it imo. The front 4 rows were allocated; seats no wider than economy but seemed to have thicker padding and there was 4″ more legroom. Food marginally better but still nothing great. Priority check-in and baggage reclaim was included. I think the Premium class on the B767s offers wider seats and other benefits. Strangely the A320s and B757s don’t offer any sort of Premium class.

Nice to see a BA B767 at EDI; I assume it was a special appearance on the LHR shuttle. I remember @5 years ago when the B767-300s were actually scheduled on 1/2 flights/day on the LHR-MAN/EDI/GLA services.

I bet that’s a rare occurence, change of a/c type and airline on both flights. I wouldn’t be too impressed getting to go on (the same) ancient A300 on both flights.
