    A very fair point Malcolm, I would have probably felt the same. A pity we have had wars but we have.

    Wasn’t at least one German pilot beaten to death by crowds? I recall the story as it being a pilot who’d bombed Buckingham Palace – but that just could just be the propaganda spin.

    Edit – actually I think it was this one I was recalling:

    “On 15 Sep 40 a Dornier Do17Z of 1 Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 76 was shot down over London, it crashed on Victoria Station after some of the crew baled out. Oberleutnant Robert Zehbe (born 9 Dec 1913 Kiel) landed by parachute in Kennington, London. He was captured and beaten to death by a mob of civilians”

    Plenty of Allied airmen were also lynched, a terrible thing regardless of which country the victims fought for.

    The service 474 is undergoing, would that have been done to an operational Lanc? Or are these types of service exceptional due to the aircrafts age?
    I was wondering how long this sort of thing would have taken for an operational Lancaster as comparison.

    I would say no, it would be classed as war weary and scrapped and parted out. Not that many did over 100 missions, so that would be 500-600ish hours.

    BREAKING NEWS: We are delighted to announce that we have been able to secure the medals and log books of Captain Eric “Winkle” Brown following the intervention of an incredibly generous donor.

    It is fair to say that Captain Brown was by many measures the Fleet Air Arm’s most significant pilot of the post-war period and we are thrilled and honoured to be able to class this collection as one of our own.

    We can now preserve the record of innovation which is contained within Captain Brown’s log books which includes previously untapped information and display them for the world to see.

    Captain Brown holds a world record for the most aircraft carrier take-offs – 2,407 and the most landings – 2,271, and on 3rd December 1945 became the first ever pilot to take off and land a jet aircraft – the Sea Vampire – on a carrier. He went on to make many contributions of wider significance to aviation history, using his Fleet Air Arm experience to fly a world record breaking 486 types of aircraft, and to test aircraft for other services and for allies.

    The Fleet Air Arm Museum was fortunate to work with Captain Brown in the last decades of his life and have been able to mark and honour his contribution in a number of ways. The Museum’s collections include the very Vampire Mk1 in which he completed his jet-powered flight, as well as the goggles and gloves which he wore during his tests; in 2015 Captain Brown himself unveiled a new bronze bust commissioned by the Museum which stands proudly in our galleries.

    Just as importantly the Museum worked with him to record in detail the long span of his service to form a key part of the archive – which includes the nation’s most significant collection of naval pilots’ flying logs – of the Fleet Air Arm.

    First time I have seen many of these photos. If he gets pays per clicks so what? It’s hasn’t cost me anything, and I get to see things I wouldn’t have thought Googling about.

    Yes Paul, The centre section does need work, but not that much if it only going to be static, lower skins etc. It looks sound enough to be static.
    I checked it out with Mike Eastman a couple of months ago. But it is missing an engine, otherwise complete.

    To add, it was at Church Fenton when we looked at it

    scotavia, they seem more active than you think, or the owner of the Anson is. A long story that would be better leaving off the forum.

    It is the Palis Foundation Anson. It’s basically complete, the fuselage is just a frame. The center section is in need of work, otherwise it needs reassembling. Still a big job though.

    The latest update from the BBMF today is;

    Lanc Update
    A lot of you have been asking when the Lanc will be flying again this year. After last years incident, this winter we were tasked with removing the fuel tanks for inspection and renewing fire proof material covering them but we also found that the entire fuel and vent system pipework required complete replacement due to age hardening of the hoses all this work has taken longer than expected. Some internal wing angle brackets were also found cracked and required replacing.The brackets are done and we now have the majority of the hoses and these are being fitted.Once this is done we then can fit the tanks. We believe if all goes well she should be flying again in 4 to 5 weeks time.

    It’s a Texas Taildragger, hence the registration.

    I guessed it was a Texas. I helped convert a 150 to a taildragger using a Texas kit in the early ’80’s.
