I think you’re just about on the money there, RIPConcorde. That’s certainly been the pattern at MAN, BHX and GLA.
It’s a strategy that has served Continental very well indeed up to now, so there’s no sense whatsoever in changing it for no good reason.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” 🙂
Was it not a downgrade at BHX? DC10-B752, or were the DC10s just unscheduled visits, I’ve just seen a lot of pics of CO DC10s at BHX. Of course it has been upgraded now, being twice daily.
No, we’ve still got them and word is that they’re about to expand at MAN. 😉
To be more specific I was referring to their unpaid fees at STN is it not? and Brussels and…. 😉
they’re about to expand at MAN.
If true, unlucky you. 😉 :diablo:
I’m not interested in your clan warfare 😉 – I’m just pointing out that the catchment areas for the two services are very close and must inevitably overlap at some point. And they are.
Continental will advance carefully and slowly – their mission is to make as much money as they possibly can in the long term; not to parade aircraft before spotters or, indeed, to fuel local rivalries.
If and when they have hard evidence of long-term higher demand at Edinburgh I have no doubt at all they will expand.
But not before they can satisfy themselves that such demand exists, and the EDI service simply has not been running for long enough to provide that proof.
Agreed, I would expect that CO will allow at least a year since the service started i.e June ’05 before considering a permanent upgrade, whether of aircraft or frequency. Maybe I’m wrong….
In the case of the CO flights, GLA will get traffic from up and down the west coast, EDI from up and down the East Coast, as far down as Newcastle…
As for the central Scotland and Stirling area, well it’s a pretty even split, probably come down to price in that situation. 🙂
Uzbekistan Airways – they used to serve MAN but switched to BHX when the small matter of unpaid landing fees was raised with them. 😉
Sounds remarkably like another airline today! Ryanair 😉
But would the extra 757 be available?
There’s the Bristol flight and (maybe) Newcastle too, remember. Liverpool as well, if rumours are to be believed.
I wouldn’t be holding my breath waiting for a 2nd daily EDI service, especially not with the GLA service just “down the road”.
I am unsure of CO’s situation regarding availablity of 757s. It is well known that the number of widebodies they need isn’t enough for their route network.
So what about EDI and GLA close-ish 😉 , if the demand is there and the aircraft are available then go ahead with it.
GLA average loads I believe are virtually unchanged since EWR-EDI started, which is a good thing.
Yeah i suppose, well as i said before i havnt got a problem with the twice daily service either…… 🙂 😀
Maybe that may happen from EDI too eventually if they don’t have the widebodies?
The current flight and an early morning departure from EWR could work at EDI, better than the set-up at BHX with the 2 departures so close…..or maybe not? 🙂
Indeed, this thread is a very annoying. Im sure the EDI guys that are making out that COs service is the best thing since sliced bread. Id like to see some concrete proof of everything you are saying.
CAA figures?
I wonder what impact, if any, the Festival has had on the loadings on EWR-EDI over the last couple of months?
Remember, though, that the festival isn’t during July, it is during August.
So the mid-90 loads in July should have had little or nothing to do with the festival.
Thats not to say they will use the 764 keep in mind.
Thats the only frame they have with enough hours in the day left to do the route. I think they’ll place it on a 762 route and use the freed up 762 for the EWR-EDI route
That’s what I’d of thought also.
I can say now.
I was talking to a few Continental agents while I waited the 4 hours for thr EWR-EDI flight. They say they are regularly calling for volunteers due to overbooking and the upper echelons of management are considering switching to a 767 to deal with the problem.
Only thing is… they currently only have a 767-400 available so its taking some considerable thinking and planning to be sure its worth it.
It’s great to hear that, B764 could be pushing it though, but CO know best if they want to or not.
Like I said though, it’s getting quite late on now for this summer is it not?
Try refreshing your bookmark? 😉
Am I looking at the wrong page or something?! 😉
http://www.caa.co.uk/erg/erg_stats/sgl.asp?sglid=11&fld=200408
The CAA provisional data indicates EDI-EWR loads for August
are some 94%.In the words of CO, EDI loads are “immense”, a comment made before the August figures were known..
Looking at other Scottish airport TX loadings it would appear that EDI will continue to outperform
load-wise.
It’s out? I can only get the CAA airport stats for August just now?
Excellent thread! Someone within my Mum’s side of the family flew for Loganair up until a year or two ago I think. Came from the oil rigs, paid his way through the training and got a job flying for Loganair! 😎
I would love to fly for them as a starting point in my ‘career’, no better way to explore your own country than fly little props to idyllic locations in Scotland. 😀
Takes me about 4/5 days to ‘throw’ jet-lag.
You younger guys should see it off in 12 hours. 🙂
I wonder if RipConcorde checked seat availabilty on this
one.?
I did, but a few days ago and it seemed to have a bit more spce on it, far from empty, but not full. Maybe it filled up the remaining seats over the last few days, or maybe I read it wrong? 😉
Infact, I believe there was an article in the Sunday Times saying that CO have intentions of upgrading the route to B767, a bit late for this summer though. 🙂
Great pics! When was that EAL B747 taken!???
It did summer charters to Orlando(Sanford?) during the summmer season of 2002, or 2001… Never returned after the one year, not just the EAL charter, but any Orlando charter.
