Is this REAL??!!! Must have been one hell of a pilot. They really prepare for everything in simulators….

But seriously, how?? I would imagine there was a fair bit of cross wind?

I would have to agree : an excellent film, and had me on the edge of my seat. The tension was nearly unbearable before the cockpit was seized as you know what’s going to happen. The use of unknown actors for the various roles was also brilliant as you could relate to the people in the film more. Based on my own judgement, it didn’t seem like a typical Hollywood over-dramatisation.

If, god forbid, there are hijackers that attempt to take over a plane again some time in the future using whatever method, pilots will not open the cockpit door and will fly to the nearest airport for an emergency landing, regardless of what is happening in the cabin?

I fly about 3-4 times a year and have to say that while not scared of it by anymeans, each time I get on a plane (Ryanair 737-800 from Stansted to Montpellier and vice-versa usually) I do always find myself looking around at the other passengers, thinking in part ‘if something happened, could all of us stop it?’

Interesting – hadn’t made the connection between the Royal Mail badge on BA planes and them actually carrying mail to overseas destinations (for some reason, I thought it was advertising?). I was also unaware of the Jet2 connection.

It always works quite quickly, though : these days it usually takes only two days for something posted in the UK to arrive at its desitnation in France (based on the post mark) and vice-versa. Stuff sent to the US seems to take about a week.

In other countries in Europe, though, isn’t transport of Prime Ministers / Presidents (or even Kings/Queens) usually carried out by the airforce of the country concerned? I’m probably wrong but in Europe there doesn’t seem to be many airplanes especailly dedicated to such tasks in the same way as Air Force One is in the USA? Wasn’t it until one point carried out by a creaking old VC-10 here in the UK?

Why the censoring for M****ille? It’s not like it’s a swear word. It’s a lovely city, although personally I prefer other places in Provence if it comes down to it (I lived close to M****ille, in a town called Aix-en-Provence for a while)

It certainly bucks the trend for them choosing airfields in the middle of nowhere or small, insignificant airports where they’re pretty much the only airline. Doesn’t their archrival Easyjet already fly to MRS? Easyjet, though, does seem to choose the major airports as destinations (Amsterdam Schiphol for example – it would be very, very, hard to imagine Ryanair flying there for one thing). One thing I clearly remember from MRS, is the very sharp turn the plane sometimes makes as you’re coming in to land (I’ve flown there a few times).

Given Ryanair’s habit of saying it flies to major cities when the actual place it goes to is quite a way away (like ‘Frankfurt’ Hahn, which is a long coach ride from Frankfurt as I remember when having flown there in 2004), could the actual airport / airfield be somewhere nearby? I do know that in any case they already fly to Nimes and also Toulon, I believe.

Sorry if this post appears a bit jumbled but I just remembered something else : Ryanair also fly to Montpellier and I seem to remember that Montpellier airport is of a similar-ish size to M****ille (M****ille felt bigger, though), so maybe it isn’t bucking the trend that much.

    Anyways……

Thank you – I feel welcome. If I could do things all over again, I would have probably paid more attention in physics and maths at school and become a commercial pilot (something I just thought of as I was reading the replies)
