I wonder what extra training they need to be able to do this ?. Above and beyond landing on any other non-paved surface ?
I suppose it’s a day out at the seaside ? 🙂
When I was at Lyneham in the 70’s once a year was the beach landing, the training was not just for the pilots (they are fully trained at Lyneham / Brize on various landing scenarios) it was primarily to teach the pongo’s on how to set up, control and protect a landing ground and from our point of view (RAF Maintenance) we had to also to protect the U/C and lower fuse from damage.
I know these days they get plenty of ‘Desert Landings’ in Afghanistan etc But during the Cold War we had zero desert strip landing experience so Dorset Beach was ideal training ground

Amarok,
The next time I want to watch television, please can I peer through your window and watch yours instead? I will not, naturally, expect to be asked to contribute towards the cost of the television or the electricity consumed.
Please don’t shoot the messenger there are locations around Shuttleworth, Farnborough RIAT etc, who do the same if not more.
I am only providing a public service, by suggesting an alternative but you are most welcome to come around watch telly and sup my Home brewed Bitter and if your a senior I will throw in some really nice Home made cake
Are you an Airshow organiser making such a statement?, do you know how much it costs to pay for aircraft who have to be fuelled, insured, and to provide all the cover on the airfield and everything else?. The cost is a bargain and I make sacrifices on other things in my life to be able to afford the things I enjoy.
Perhaps those who enjoy the show for free at my expense on the South side might contribute to keep costs down????
Good idea give Duxford School PTA a call and see if they want to contribute I am sure they will oblige, this has to be the best equipped school in the country with a Gym and swimming pool !
I think its £9 per car and they do a awfully good Home Made Cake and tea stand
Veterans and Seniors always have a warm welcome and nice comfortable places to watch the Show
As they used to say at Brooklands
a great Crowd and no Crowding :highly_amused:
My first thought was Halton which may fit with the source of some of the parts.
yes it does look like Halton Airfield, the Hangars match

My 10p’s worth.
A large majority of the aircraft components were built on Jigs so the quality was only as good as the quality of the Jig. also you had specific personnel trained for specific tasks for example 1 person would drill / ream holes and 1 person would rivet there was no ‘Jack of All trades’ used in the initial construction aircraft production is not like car production with a moving line
For example you have 6 aircraft on the go at once in the erecting shop.
Bottom end of the hanger were the Jigs for wings, tail plane and Fuse assembly’s here were the skilled workers who were paid more money. Top end of the Hangar was the erecting shop with all the major assemblies converging on these aircraft for assembly by semi-skilled workers under supervision of foremen when six were completed they were wheeled out the hangar to the flight test area and paint shop. and another 6 were built in the empty space.
By restricting all the skilled operations to your best workers on the Jigs (They all had to take rivet / drilling checks, if they didn’t meet the standard they were put in the Erecting shop) a good level of quality control was built in.
If you look at WWII aircraft in general Lancaster Bombers for example are pretty slab sided are were relatively easy to build , but spitfires with its curves and streamlining required lots of effort and skill to produce but again if built in a Jig was 10 times easier to assemble than hand built. (I saw a report on spitfire MH434, where at some stage early in its life one of the wing’s was swapped with a wing built in a shadow factory and was 1/2 inch smaller ! so as I said precision was with the Jig)
Please also remember we were early doors during WWII in using fully riveted aluminium panels these days we use gallons of thick sealant between the panels so it is very difficult to pull a rivet with the panel ‘bonded’ to the adjacent panel. (DH Comet crashes and excessive rivets springs to mind)
They’re finally going to swing the entire airfield 180 degrees so as to please a handful of freeloading photographers!?
please Not we freeloaders are happy with the layout, If you swing 180 and we will be shooting into the sun like the punters !
😉
The plastic P51D would look good on a Pole by the entrance to IWM flying with the Hurricane 🙂

You wouldn’t happen to have the ISBN code for Adam Tooze’s book?
Thank you.

I would be very surprised if they risked flying such a rare aircraft over the pond under it’s own power? Maybe the guys that own XT752 have contacts – after all wasn’t it flown to them in the back of an AN-224. If an a/c (AN-224) is scheduled to fly back to the UK empty, then perhaps they are taking advantage of this…
Either way – would love to see it again… sat in the cockpit of it at CU in Aug 1983…blimey that was 30 years ago… eek!
Or Possibly a USAF / RAF C17 I am sure she will fit 😎
