Hi All,
We have to make a new Horizontal stabiliser for our Sycamore HR.14 up here in sunny Doncaster. Does anyone have details of dimensions etc or can point me in the right direction. I’ve done multiple internet search’s but so far with no luck.
Kind regards
Nigel (owner Sea King HAS.6 – XV677)
Helicopter Museum @ Weston Super Mare They had a Sycamore under restoration also the chaps at Rochester Airport have restored on of these in the past
Please excuse this being my first post on this forum, I’ve been a long time lurker and a regular poster over at AiX.
I have been trying to talk with the landowner and / or the tenant farmer of the former RAF Harrington, Northamptonshire. Some of you will know that the Thor missile remains at this site have been awarded Grade II listing, however this does nothing to prevent further decay. The landowner is obliged to keep them in their current state and prevent continued attrition but if they don’t there is little that can be done until it’s too late.
After two years of trying and getting no response, I have decided to mount a facebook campaign and get as many ‘likes’ as I can to demonstrate that there is significant desire amongst the public at large to preserve the site for future generations. Once we have ‘critical mass’ (pun sort of intended) I can then go to the local press and give them a story, all adding to the pressure on the landowner to just talk!
I have the support of the local museum, the parish and district councils, local residents, published authors and of course English Heritage, so hopefully this will eventually be taken seriously.

I’d appreciate it if you’d click the link, give it a like if you want to and show your support and concern for this site.
Apologies if this post contravenes forum rules, let me know and I’ll remedy / remove; I only have the best intentions.
Thank you.
HI
can I make a suggestion please ?, have you tried driving to the farmer / owners house and having a chat ?, I can’t help feeling if you go down this route however noble it might be you still at the end of the day need to speak to the owner !
Nice for Museum Visitors
Is ground equipment ever ‘airworthy’?
Its nice for museum visitors to see a ‘jet engine in a barrow’, especially on a wet start ! :highly_amused:
No Vulcan or 617SQN Tornado ?
with the Lancaster that trio would be a excellent salute to 617 Sqn
i understand that the ‘engines’ of the elvington halifax are empty units – presumably to save weight
I think the Hastings wing on the Halifax was found on the fire dump at Catterick ? so I suspect the engines were long gone 🙁
Marmite:cool:
Hmm Vulcan sponsored by Marmite Black & Yellow !!
good idea Bomberboy 😉
Already paid this years membership and brought a couple of share certificates in January……….
Ditto
Spread the word
Kind regards
Last year i was fortunate to be at Beachy Head when the Vulcan displayed. This has gone down in my top 5 of most memorable aircraft displays since i started attending shows at Weston Park in the 1970’s. Anyway I’ve looked on Eastbourne’s web site to see if there would be a repeat performance this year and unfortunately there currently is not.
Looking at the web site further i noticed the contact page so i filled in my details and asked what was the chance of getting 558 back and did not really expect a response. To my surprise i received two emails back within 12 hours of me sending my question which i applaud. Basically the response stated that until 558 was confirmed as a flyer this year they would not be looking but if she did fly and the budget or a sponsor could be found they would look again, so not a no and not a yes.
If you want to see 558 at Beachy Head this year i think that anyone who wants to should email Eastbourne and express their positive opinion, go on you know you want to.
It might be better to send money to the Vulcan Boys, get the Vulcan ready THEN email Eastbourne don’t you think ?
No Flyee no Displayee
😉
Kelly Brook for B17 PR !!!
My suggestion is they employ Kelly Brook as the PR ‘Face’ of Sally B.
As the RIAT organisers delight every year in telling us, 75% of visitors to airshows are not Aviation Enthusiasts they are Joe public and are more interested in shopping !
So if the B17 needs more money surely they need to appeal to the wider public and the Enthusiast cash cow is sounding very poor!. Kelly Brook is a beautiful woman who IMHO has suffered from really bad management and I can’t help feeling this would be ideal for both parties.
Kelly painted on the nose of Sally B HMMMMM 😉

Taffy’s account of the flight makes fascinating reading. Has Taffy ever visited Duxford and been reunited with XM135?
Alan,
I spoke to Taffy at one of the lyneham old boys get togethers 99? , he went to duxford in the 90’s IRC to see a brass plate with his details fitted to the cockpit ?
Blackburn Beverley Aden ?
I recall when I was at Lyneham talking to a old chief tech who was on beverleys in the 60’s and the story was around a RAF 6 wheeled fire engine (ALVIS ?) was required at a forward airfield so the chap’s loaded her up in the Bev. Lined up and full chat down the runway and she struggled to climb so a low level circuit and smartly back down . The plonkers had forgot to drain the water out of the fire engine and she was FULL !:o
RAF C130 smoking in the 1960’s & 1970’s
British C-130’s used to have ashtrays and no smoking signs!
If you wanted a smoke on a herc you went up to the flightdeck and sat on the bed for a good puff. there was no smoking in the cargo hold
engineering officer who flew a Lightning at RAF Lyneham
Ah, yes, the Cornfield Bomber F-106, in Montana. Already did a piece on that, for Aviation History. But bring ’em on, if you have any others. So far, I have…
Margaret Horton
B-24 that flew empty from Florida to Mexico
F8 Crusader pilot who fell 15,000 feet and survived
Pardo’s Push, plus Risner’s
WWI observer fell out, fell back in
Lancaster chuteless bailout into snowdrift
Various takeoffs with wings still folded
C337 that disintegrated at altitude, passenger lived when cabin fell into tree
Taffy Holden July 1966 who accidently flew Lightning 1A XM135 (Now at Duxford) at RAF Lyneham
Thanks for that – a quick look at the RAFM Navigator site reveals a couple of upper mainplanes and a propeller. – perhaps in addition to the example at the MAM. In the “buried treasure” thread on here a couple of weeks ago there was also reference to some fuselages dumped in a sandpit behind a pub in (IIRC) Sawston, Cambs.
The Science Museum has an AW Jaguar engine – although it apprears to have been partly sectioned for display.
One further query – in the good old days of the RAFM when the galleries were open there used to be some wings in a glass case near to the VC gallery. Can anybody remember what they were from?
They were the Bristol Bulldog wings
Ex Royal British Legion Replica Spitfire
I recall in 2009 seeing the replica Spitfire built by Ripon British legion
the plane is designed to be dismantled and transported on a trailer 🙂
I see from this article it was sold to a York Businessman Michael Oliver, chairman of Europe’s largest privately-owned valve manufacturer, Oliver Valves.
Might be worth contacting him and see if they will loan it to you ?
Coventry Transport Museum is a great visit well done to everyone
kind regards
