Ah, Marshalls in those days, so still doing pretty much the same job or has that finished with all the cuts?

Still some steady trade with the C130’s there is ‘Snoopy’ XV208 and I think XV222 parked engineless by the C130 Maint hangars and a RAF Tristar by the Tristar hangar, most days there is usually a Herc doing engine runs or air test.

It looks like a Supermarine 510

    Photobucket

During 1946, in response to a contract to build two prototypes of a single-seat high-speed fighter to Specification E.41/46, Supermarine combined sweptback wing and tail surfaces with what was essentially an Attacker fuselage to create the Type 510. This retained the Rolls-Royce Nene 2 engine and tailwheel undercarriage of the Attacker, and the first prototype was flown on 29 December 1948. No armament was fitted, but provision was made for four wing-mounted 20mm cannon. The second prototype, designated Type 528, flew in similar configuration on 27 March 1950, and, on 8 November of that year, the Type 510, fitted with an Attacker-style A-frame arrester hook, made a series of landings and take-offs from the carrier HMS Illustrious. Later, the first aircraft (now redesignated Type 517) was fitted with a movable rear fuselage permitting the incidence of the integral tailplane to be varied. Meanwhile, the Type 528 was fitted with an afterburning version of the Nene, a lengthened nose and a tricycle undercarriage as the Type 535, flying in this form for the first time on 23 August 1950, and providing the basis for the development of the Swift.

Does anyone know the last time the vanguard was run up and if this is still done,
    Thanks, Matt

Matt, I doubt if they will run the engines again, the last time I was at Brooklands (Nov 2010) aboard the Merchantman the chaps said the last time they were run was about 6 years ago before the Mercedes World was built on the hardstanding and there was lots of clear space behind and had a fire engine in attendance.
Since relocation to the aircraft Park the aircraft is surrounded by Gravel also insurance, Fire, health & safety issues they felt it was highly unlikely the engines would run again.

    its a Merchantman

The Vanguard was converted to a Merchantman, I was working for Monarch Airline Engineering and we had the contract to look after the Merchantman. I used to service them at Luton when they were with ABC Carriers later they became Air Bridge.

They did the Newspaper run at night, News international would truck The Sun from Wapping and the Merchantman would fly it up north, returning at 2am.
During the day ABC had two Merchantmen at Luton G-APEG and G-APES (affectionately known as PEST) they would do the Race Horse runs to Ireland and back with the Aer Turas Britannia (Air Tortoise) later they got a CL44.

I remember on one occasion waiting to depart a Monarch BAC 1-11 I called the ramp tramp on the radio
Where are the punters were waiting ?
    RAMP TRAMP
‘We sent them out 10 minutes ago!’

A quick scan I spotted a queue of people across the other side of the ramp at the Merchantman, so I jumped in the van and drove over, the horse ramp was fitted to the Open Cargo door and was covered in Horse sh1t, I quickly ran up the ramp and spoke to the confused passenger at the head of the queue who was standing in the cargo bay looking at the horse stall’s and pile’s of horse sh1t and said

‘This one hasn’t been cleaned Sir, please follow me to a clean one !!’

    😀
I will try and dig out some photos

    Kind regards
    Mike

    Sounds about right 🙁

When I was in the RAF in the 70’s (RAF Lyneham had BF109 Black 6 in the hangar) it was the case if serving members were involved you managed to beg steal or borrow facilities no Barney 🙂

But once the RAF staff were posted or moved on that was it, I think Black 6 moved with Russ to RAF Benson

    John,
I have been in contact with the Group who are trying to save some buildings at RAF Oakington (Not too far from Wyton) after a number of emails they now have one of the two J Hangars on their Radar, as this was a Stirling Base in WWII your project would fit in really nice and I suspect would bolster the bid for the Hangar, it might be worth a punt ?

    Thanks for clearing this up

I agree the airshow with fast jets would need plenty of space, not to mention the insurance, health and safety etc.
But still feel the fly-in idea could work, Duxford don’t have access to jet A1 so the jets arrive with minimum fuel and on departure head for Cambridge or Southend to ‘top up’.
For the first fly-in keep it down to a max of 5 aircraft. (mabey the chaps at Coventry might be up for it Canberra, Meatbox and twin pin ?)
or some JP’s and Gnats for example, for the first time don’t even have to be Jets Warbirds, Dak’s etc

If the show opened at 10am that would give us plenty of time (8am – 10am) to get 5 aircraft landed and positioned in the ‘Flight Line’ with all the Brunty regulars. Just like Duxford the ‘flight line’ would be open from 10am – 2pm so everyone can come and see the aircraft, and the flightline is closed till the end of the show, and the crowd are moved to a safe distance. The brunty Jets do their Fast Taxi’s throughout the afternoon and the final runs are the visitors departing.

Hopefully it will be minimal fuss, an added twist to the Brunty Displays ?? and I suspect once the message gets out you would find lots of interest from both the visitors and the crews (Fighter Meet 2012 ??)
I would love to get a Photo of a Luftwaffe Phantom, next to the Starfighter and the three Bucc’s (for example) as would many more Enthusiasts.

    Always a problem

I remember going to IAT 1983 at Greenham Common (god I feel Old) and paying for 3 persons but the chap only gave me 2 tickets (It was £5 each at the time) he was most put out when I asked for my missing ticket, and when you saw the queue of cars behind it made me think if he carried on the same scam how much money did he make that day and the following day ? he would need a shopping bag to take the loot home !.
The only way to effectivly control is to have your own staff in the Ticket point, fair enough use a 3rd party for car / crowd control or the local scouts but never use a 3rd party to handle the money.

There is still time I wonder for this year mabey we could have a fly-in, the one at Coventry went down a storm and if we put out an open invitation who knows?? Sea Vixen, Vulcan, Luftwaffe Phantoms, Typhoon, or NATO F16’s if Bruntingthorpe could get control of the tickets mabey the airshow could go back on the calendar.

    regards
    Mike
