1980’s Ray Hanna
Ray Hanna ‘Piece of Cake’ 😀
Yes, I found that photo on the net (or one very like it) after a quick search last night. It’s the only one I’ve seen so far. Can’t quite make my name out unfortunately…
The point is, as far as I am concerned anyway, that the promise was made something like six or seven years ago now?
If the names went up in the bomb bay last year, then they have kept an awful lot of people waiting a long time. And some have no doubt passed away before having an opportunity to see the moment come.
And how do we get to see our names now? Do we have to wait until it is finally grounded and on display in a museum? Couldn’t someone have taken a panorama of photographs and posted them on the net, if for nothing else then at least to encourage more donations? (If it’s been done, I would welcome a link to it, as I asked about last night.)
To me, it’s just a small example of how the project seems to have treated one of its most precious assets (those who have dug deep) in a less than admirable way.
However, I said I don’t usually take part in Vulcan threads so I’m not going to prolong the debate.
The names were there from day one if you sent them an email they would have sent you a photo. 90% of the displays the vulcan has been airborn without landing. The aircraft is based at RAF Lyneham so there is limited access (again an email will get you an invite) and at the displays where she did land, as the aircraft was Live it is impossible to let people swarm around
so with the greatest of respect what you are saying because you couldn’t see you name in the bomb bay on that basis recommending that no one trusts that lot and with that you are signing off ?
I normally stay silent on the XH588 threads but the idea that contributors will have their names inscribed on plaques to be displayed inside the bomb bay reminds me that I was promised my name would appear there, in paint, if only I donated above a certain level of £££s.
I did, and I’m still waiting to see my name, or anyone else’s for that matter, painted up there.
I’m sorry to say it but I would not trust a single word that issues from the mouths of that lot!
Have you seen The Bomb Bay on XH558 ?, below was the bomb bay at Coventry in 2010 My name is there along with a few thousand more and I like you paid my £40 many years ago (and £££ more since), so they kept their promise !. Where did you hear it wasn’t ?

IMHO I think we should try and get behind the chaps as after speaking to the engineers they are trying bloody hard to keep the Vulcan Flying, OK mistakes have been made (By the MANAGEMENT) but I can assure you the TEAM are working their rocks off, 2010 flying season was a great example zero failures due to technical problems there isn’t a display team that can boast that reliability, lets be honest here chaps we only have 2 or 3 years left with the Vulcan, we should be spending our time getting behind the TEAM and giving them all our support.
2 points to ponder
1. the 2 currently airworthy Nimrod R1’s ?
2. IIRC some of the warton nimrod fuselarge were flow in AN124’s (could that land at Cosford?)

Mike
RAF Neatishead had a Phantom Gate Guard
IIRC there was a Phantom Gate Guard at RAF Neatishead that was taken away does anyone know what happend to the old girl ?
Good show and Brooklands
Sopwiths were at Brooklands so I think that ties it up nicely
the BP Motor spirit signs Brooklands ?
that looks like the start finish straight at Brooklands, Hawkers were rigging and test flying it looks like a Hawker Woodcock ?
They are both bottle beers
They are both bottle beers so you should be able to get them from tesco, asda or sainsbury or delivered direct
last year we had
A Staffordshire pub will be marking the Battle of Britain by staging a beer festival featuring some 30 aviation-themed real ales.
The Bulls Head in St John’s Square, Burslem will begin its two-week festival on 14 September, the day before Battle of Britain Day. The cask ales will include Spitfire, Lightning, Hurricane, Victor, Valiant and Vulcan (the V Bombers) and a Mustang Mild.
The event is intended to raise funds for the RAF Association Wings Appeal, which provides welfare and care for those serving and ex-serving members of the RAF who are in need. Landlord Bob Crumpton, a big aviation fan, said “We should support and remember our heritage and this is our way of commemorating the heroism and ultimate sacrifices made during the Battle of Britain. It is something that should not be forgotten.”
Last year the Bull’s Head raised over £400 for the Wings Appeal – hopefully this year it will be even more successful.
Thanks Matt
Matt,
thanks for posting this, what a friendly team you have at Brunty.
I am looking forward to my first weekend with the team at the end of Feb.
There is lots to do so if there are any other ERKS want to roll up their sleeves and come along you will be made most welcome.
You don’t have any aviation experience so don’t let that hold you back I will be running training sessions for anyone interested.
Kind regards
Mike
Was it one of the French Comets You saw ?
Hi, could it have been one of the French Comets or the Caudron C.640 Typhon ?
I am up for it 🙂
Hi,
I am up for it (16 years in RAF, Airlines and British Aerospace engineer)
PM has been sent
where do I sign up and can I bring my caravan for a weekender ?
Kind Regards
Mike
both pilot and nav had inertia reel seat belts, that would pull the occupant back into the seat prior to ejection.
Also the Sea Vixen had a dual ejection system
1. Pneumatic (for ditching)
2. Standard Rocket.
IMHO the location of the nav in the ‘pit’ gives the pilot an excellent field of vision (canberra BI8’s and the PR9’s have the same layout) side by side would restrict the view not to mention the light for the radar

Mike
Great Photos,
IMHO The Hunter should go into the Milestones Gallery (Excellent aircraft and a commercial sucess for UK) and the ‘Plastic’ Eurofighter Typhoon should go on the poles, I can see it now we will have photos in 2013 with the hunter looking shabby and corroded with the possibility of it being scrapped ! (mabey I am getting sinical in my old age but the RAFM’s track record on external airframes really sucks) at the moment the Hunter looks immaculate but in Oman Markings is it really relevent to the Royal Air Force the ‘Typhoon’ (Currently in the milestones) is a plastic display model and would in RAF Markings make a very good gate guard, and is better suited to external display. I think we really need to start looking after our heritage before it all turns to dust !
Mike
she is listed as the biggest Navy Plane !!
Lack of Phantoms
I am not entirely sure but I think I read somewhere the RAF Phantoms were Part of the Arms Treaty and had to be destroyed ! When I did my RAF Training there were Lots of Hunters, Gnats, Canberra’s, Sea Vixens,2 Argosy’s etc
at RAF Halton, enough to fill 20 Collections I suspect they all got the chop 🙁
If a couple of these airframes could become ‘Pool’ airframes (The recently retired specially Marked Harrier(s) would be ideal) they could do short term stays at the various museums so people didn’t have too far to drive and would help the struggling museums by giving them some top quality airframes to get the punters in :-). what about Local car clubs (period vehicles)
RIAT like the RAF Museum kept going on about the majority of visitors were not aviation minded , one visit a couple of years ago to Hendon to hear all the Racket going on in the ‘Kids Zone’ was enough for me to leave it alone for a few years also I now refuse to go into RIAT due to the feeling of being an outcast with all the shopping and Hospitality going on (It has been going steadily downhill since Paul Bowen passed away and I have been to every IAT since the First one !!).
so please be careful and get the balance right
