Looks like German MG34/MG42 to me – aluminium is said to have been for paratroops as most were steel.
There were versions of this weapon used in aircraft but I don’t know about the ammo containers.

Can anyone post a diagram from the AP of the Automatic Pilot Mk IV showing all the components?
Based only on some other pictures I have seen, deffo luminous – and therefore hot:eek:
Put it in a plastic bag and leave it in a freezer for about a week – that should discourage them.

funny looking Lancaster, but it was made in a trench
This one appears to have been b^stardised for a second carrer on a model railway or yacht etc. The rusty screws and bent up tabs are later improvements.

PA474 over Sywell at about 1835 today 🙂
It’s just a ratio, 30″:10″ = 300‘:100′ so you have measured the slant range to be 300’. For the range to be 500′, your fingers would have needed to have been 6″ apart.
You would probably need to close one eye to get it right …One of these days I will make a proper measuring thingy for doing this.:)
found it, a 1996 US report into the $80bn ammo stockpile, 25% of which is believed to be over 25 years old.
Given the difficulty of locating and testing the old stuff, they tend to buy new every time something ‘kicks off’ which makes the problem worse.
That’s interesting thanks for posting. I suspect the clip thingys were standard stationery like giant paper clips.
Static Vent it is then. Thanks to AM and to everyone else for thinking about it.
could be, it is directly under the ASI
