Don’t know that. Before reading your post, I thought Greece was the only country to have Corsair II… Corsair II was also a contender (with the Skyhawk) against Jaguar M and Super Etendard for the french navy requirement (for a strike fighter) in 1973. Aerospatiale even propose to open a production line in France, in Toulouse!!

the Spey was more powerful no? more than 9000kgp against 8000 for the J79… I heard the performances were bad because the engine was too big for the phantom (it was a turbofan, not a turbojet…) so they had to enlarge the air intakes, the aft of the airplane, add weight…

Perfect Iranian F14A! That’s EXACTLY the good reason why the Atar was proposed!!
    :p 🙂
If we compare the ultimate Atar, the 9K50 ( the Mirage F1 and Mirage 50 engine) it had a thrust (with reheat) of 7200kgp. The first phantom’s J79 had 7700kgp, and the last 8120kgp. So the loss was not enormous… but that’s right the Atar was less powerful than the J79 (ask the Israelis 🙂 )

you’re right, but the post date back from 2000. The Foch was retired in 2000, as the Charles De Gaulle become operational. The Clemenceau was retired in 1997. It was not scrapped until… March 2006 🙂
But during falkland war, Great Britain keep the old Hermes in service… so why not the Clemenceau and Foch?
we need all aircrafts carrier we have in order to scrap the Royal Navy… :p 🙂
And Rafale M01 was first tested on the Foch on 15 april 1993…
But I admit the antiquated Crusader are totally unuseful… we need more Rafale!!

F8 Crusader and Super-Etendard of the Foch Clemenceau and charles De Gaulle versus Sea-Harrier of the Invicible, Ark Royal and the third british aircraft carrier (I forgot its name 🙁 )… Super-Etendard is very similar to Sea Harrier according to performances, but not air-to-air capabilities!!

For my modelling projects, one day I will take the digital camera of my sister, put all the Mirage on a single row on the table and made some photos of them… 🙂
I made Mirage F1, 2000, and III some years ago. The IV is nearly finished, so I start the prototypes now. First was the ACF (a Heller Mirage F1 was the basis) then, the 4000. Now, I just finish the G8 (using a Mig-23 as a basis because of the swing-wing system) and the “G” is on the way… the F2 will be the last (using a Mirage 2000D/N as basis).
I also made a project , the fighter version of the Mirage IV the IVC…

Thank you very much for the three-views of the G!
Now I have three-views of ALL Mirages aircrafts, from the III to the 4000… fantastic!!
It’s easy to found pictures of operational aircrafts such as the III, IV F1 and 2000. But the prototypes were very hard to find… 🙂

Thank you Deino! I know very well the pictures on the left (I send a mail to the webmaster of this website yesterday, to ask him were he found these pictures)

But the 3-view on the right is something new! Where do you find it? on a website?

About the F2 and F3 : two prototypes were built, only the F2 flew, as a tetbed. How many flights ? when was is abandonned ? Were the F2 and (unfinished F3) prototypes scrapped? Waht about Israel connection for the F2 ?

The Mirage lineage is really a mess, especially in the 60’s ;there was a lot of VTOL, swept-wing, VG-wings (and Mirage III derivatives) who flew at the same period. More, Mirage “names” are rather illogical (why 2000 and 4000 ? I never understood… )

Mirage VTOL, F2 , G, G8 and ACF were never produced for the french air force, that’s right. Why ?
It’s because the french air force NEVER KNOWN WHAT IT REALLY NEEDED.
sometimes they wanted an interceptor, and then, a low-level bomber. Sometimes a twin-engined bomber, sometimes a one-engined interceptor, sometimes a multirole fighter…
In the 60’s , french air force specifications for Mirage III replacement changed nearly every two years!! That’s why there was so much Mirage prototypes who were never produced (look at this list!!)
    Mirage III-V
    Mirage F2
    Mirage G
    Mirage G8
    ACF
All these prototypes were good, but they were never produced because french air force change it’s mind (or lacked money…).
And it was the same for the 2000 : french air force wanted a twin engined figther, and frustated by the single-engined 2000 in 1975, obtained the Rafale in 1988…

Flogger were do you find that superb photo of Mirage F2 ? have you any datas about this aircraft?

    That’s right!
I red a lot of articles about Dassault : it’s influence over french presidents or ministers was incredible. He successfully lobbied Giscard for the 2000 in 1975, Miterrand and Chirac in 1988 for the rafale!!
He also lobbied hard against F-18 on french aircrafts-carriers, because he saw it as a threat against the Rafale. As a consequence, French Navy had to stay on Crusaders until July 1999 !!!
I never understood why french navy didn’t “navalized” the F1 in order to replace the Crusaders, or even the Super Etendard. The F1 was the perfect plane for the Aeronavale!
