The photo with the Hornet is well known and was taken during the Enduring Freedom encounters.
Apparently the Rafale totally outmaneuvered Tomcats and Hornets (at the time the E/F had not entered service) in dogfight. American pilots were stunned by the agility of the fighter. There was the testimony of French pilot Santiago in AirFan, july 2002 “contre les Tomcats, c’est une vΓ©ritable boucherie”
“against Tomcats, its a real slaughter”
FightingIrish, what you heard about Rafale making low flying over an american carrier happened during Enduring Freedom in March 2002. At the time, many aircraft carriers were on patrol off shore Pakistan to launch air raids against the Talibans. There was English and Italian light carriers, and of course the Charles de Gaulle and Stennis. SuperEtendards from the CDG made strikes, but not the Rafales (they were on F1 standard at the time, Ie only air to air missions. More, the plane entered service in May 2001)
Rafale from the CDG met Tomcats and Hornets from the Stennis. Rafale fly over the deck of the Stennis but didn’t land or made touch and go. But French and AMerican
E-2 made cross decks.
The plane was name Rafale because of the Caudron Rafale from 1935. This plane beat world speed record (for land based aircraft of course) in 1935 at 500km/h. The plane was a an aerodynamic marvel so Dassault remember that 50 yaers later and name the ACX like this… (photo)
I like the Jag with this nose. It really look like a fighter. Just a question : Is it possible to put two SeaEagles underwings and one drop tank under the belly ? Or is it too heavy and draggy for the Jag ?
Thank you very much! Harry what is exactly a F.U.B.A.R ? π
PCB?
does your Harrier III need to be supersonic? because it is possible to fit PCB (plenum combustion chambers) to a standard Harrier. This was Hawker P.1175 of 1970.
Another question : Could Europe (or GB) revived the P.1216 project and make its own JSF from it ? Of course, it need some upgrades (it date back from 1981)
alas, apparently Hawker design bureau (at Kingston) was closed in 1992 π
Steve O I suppose there’s no model of the P.1216 so I have to do one starting from a F-16… I know the website very well (alas it is no longer updated π ). In fact the author just scanned the pictures, traduced the book and put that on the web. The article is only a french translation of Butler’s work (!!)
I think the P.1216 was the perfect project to replace the Harrier by a “pure” british aircraft. Its really a pity that even the Falkland war couldn’t convince Miss Thatcher to fund the project…
Have you seen the X-wing P.1214 ? awesome project!
Steveo your Hawker P.1216 is very good. I red Tony Butler bokk “British secret project fighter” and this plane was the final result of 25 years of studies by Hawker on VTOL supersonic fighters. A pity Great Britain couldn’t find money 20 years ago.
The P.1216 could have been a join program between RAF (no Harrier GR5) RN (No SeaHarrier F/A2) Spain and Italy (no AV8 B). With such a program, no VTOL JSF (and no problems with Wavers).
Ca serait le comble…
This sound incredible… Just look at the situation.
Rafale can’t find any export customers ok? It lose in South Korea and Singapore. Its big rival, the Typhoon, have more success (austria, saudi arabia etc.).
So the Rafale is in trouble… And who save it, becoming its first export customer? Great Britain!!! France (and Dassault!!!) old ennemy :p
Great Britain, to buy 234 Typhoons and 150 JSF… that story is really incredible!
Wow. I didn’t know that ITAR problems between GB and the USA were so importants… Do you think this article is really serious? A rafale in FAA markings? this is really impressive…
I forgot : the Mirage had it’s own cruise missile the ASMP,with 200km range and 200kt warhead. It became the Mirage IVP…
Shorsch, thank you very much!!! I appreciate a lot what you said…how fine was it…
First, learn that General Hankock test the Mirage IV for the RAAF in may 1963.
Second, BAC was ready to put the electronics of the TSR2 in the Mirage IV, after the TSR-2 cancellation. With two powerful spey turbofans, it would be much powerful than your scrappy Vigilante or prone-to-wing-pivot-failure and-engine-stall F-111.
This airplane would have been the Mirage IVK (K for Kingdom, United Kingdom).
Third, The Mirage IV stayed on nuclear alert until 1996, and as recon airplane until 2005.(much better than the vigilante, scrap in 1979…). And the delta wing has much less drag than a swept wing in supersonic flight…
Cheers,
Archibaald
bad time for french old ships… π

There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things we know we don’t know.
But, there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we don’t know we don’t know.”

My goodness!! grey area, tell me that’s a joke. Rumsfeld don’t said something so stupid… he REALLY said that? I remember Bush saying something like”I think fishes and men could live together in harmony”, but aparently Rumsfeld is not bad, too.
