France offers 25% discount to India on purchase of 36 Rafale jets

The ballpark cost per aircraft as per Dassault’s winning bid for the 126 MMRCA programme — the old, nowscrapped, Rafale deal — came to about $300 million, taking into account the estimates of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). Sources told ET that the objective was to bring this down to a little over $200 million apiece.

The overall cost is not expected to cross $8 billion for the entire 36-aircraft fleet, French sources said.

The price per aircraft is not just the acquisition cost of the platform, but also includes maintenance facilities, training of pilots and technicians, armaments and spares. In comparison, Dassault signed a deal with Qatar on Monday to sell 24 Rafale fighters for $7 billion, which would put the per-aircraft cost at just over $290 million.

Holey shnikey that’s a lot of money for 36 frames!

Saudi Arabia To Build Antonov Cargo Planes

According to Al-Saud, the evolved Antonov-32 will have an extended range and is designed for military and civilian operations.

“Its range will be doubled or more and the kingdom will participate in developing new specifications for the aircraft to co-own this technology with the Antonov company,” he said.

“The new Saudi-Ukrainian aircraft will be designed with Western engines from Canada, navigation systems from American company Honeywell, as well as other parts that will be acquired from the UK,” he added

I wonder if the An-70 will be close behind. Seems like ripe pickings.

Navy’s wish list: 6 nuke subs, N-powered carrier

“We have proposed to the government that in lieu of the conventional submarines we would like to have more nuclear-powered submarines,” Navy Chief Admiral Robin Dhowan told The Tribune today. The decision is pending at the level of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the Admiral said, adding that the number of nuclear-powered submarines sought was six.

Sounds like the IN wants the P-75I program to transform into a nuke boat program. I wonder if France will help with that? 😉 😀

    Switching gears a little bit:
APKWS hits 10-for-10 in rocket tests from Australian Tiger

Testing with the Australian Army’s 16 Aviation Brigade’s Tigers included using APKWS to convert a Forges de Zeebrugge (FZ) unguided rocket into a laser precision-guided weapon, and marked the first time airborne testing for both the Tiger and the FZ was conducted with APKWS.

The weapon scored 10 hits out of 10 during the live trials, which took place in the country’s Northern Territory near Darwin in November 2014, BAE announced on 13 April. This followed ground testing of the system at Australia’s Woomera test range in August 2014, during which APKWS hit seven for seven.

The 10 test shots were conducted in “extreme heat conditions” at ranges of 1,500-4,500m (4,920-14,800ft), at altitudes of 200-1,500ft and at speeds of up to 140kt (259km/h). All 10 shots hit the target within 1m of the laser spot, BAE says.

The Dhruv WSI and the LCH are designed to use the same FZ rockets that were converted to the APKWS.

Could it be that the Rafales are mainly going to be tasked with the strategic/nuclear role?

Bill Sweetman has admitted that the cost of the F-35 to be $100 million. But that mea culpa is buried in an otherwise completely idiotic and meandering rant about something he doesn’t like and apparently not worthy of me remembering either 😀

Their roles include coastal and offshore patrolling, policing maritime zones of India, control and surveillance, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy with limited wartime roles.

In keeping with Government’s ‘Make in India’ focus, complete design and engineering of OPVs is planned to be undertaken in-house at L&T’s Warship Design Centre, the company said in a press release.
