Wow, thanks Jonesy for that detailed reponse.
Other than the T45 and the CVF, what other surface combatant platforms does the RN have in the pipeline?
Also, the CVF is supposed to 60,000 long tons (the disp. moves from 50K to 60K depending on when one asks). But it is supposed to accomodate 36 (some say 34) F-35Bs along with the EH101s. First question, how many EH101’s are slated for the CVFs? Secondly, isn’t 36 JSFs somewhat on the smaller side of what a 60K ship should be carrying?
Any indications if other nations are interested in picking up soem of the surplus British equipment?
Bahnhaus, we are not interested about what you think about what Indian1973 considers reasonable time.
As per previous reports, a lot of the Mirages will be going for the strategic role, WMD, that sort of thing.
A big aspect of the role can be surmised by the equipment the IAF orders along side the planes. The Mirages will most likely take over the wild weasel role from the Mig-23s and therefore I expect to see some nifty standoff EW gear being purchased. Probably not for the whole fleet but most likely for a sqdn or two worth.
An interesting part of the MKI M2K-5II combo is that in one mission, one can escort the other, while in another mission the roles can change. Both are good at mud moving, both have the good range of A-G weaps, both have excellent BVR and WVR weaps. So that combo will definitely be an interesting one if the M2K deal goes through, which could just turn out to be a rumor.
But if the deal goes through, the IAF’s orbat will definitely be upgraded. That being said, it’s still not clear to me if the benefits of buying the M2Ks outweigh pumping that money into the local industry. Will have to wait and see.
Synergy is the name of the game, especially in military aviation.
I have a feeling that not only India but other other countries may be involved in the PAK-FA project. There’s already strong indications that French companies might collaborate (mabe on a contract basis) but this doesn’t necessarily mean that France will buy the PAK-FA.
Also, EADS is also keen to get a piece of the Russian aviation market, they may also be part of the project. There’s enough work for a lot of companies, especially high end Western EU companies. Whatever Russia or India can’t provide, could be contracted out to others in the field.

Re: IAF chief to visit France
India has already finalised the acquisition of 10 Mirage-2000-V jets from Qatar, which wants to sell them off. But the French proposal is to sell 18 Mirage-2000-Vs off-the-shelf to IAF, followed by licensed production of 108 in India.
Interesting news about the Qatari Mirages. Any confirmation of the deal being done? I thought that there was no deal being considered by Qatar in the first place.
Obviously, Haley you dun know your StarTreck 🙂
Have you heard of Mr. Sulu? The Scots haven’t made it to space but there was Scotty.

Yes, Eurocopter is in the race, but another Bolkow 117 design-sale to an Asian country (first to Kawasaki, then to HAL) would be pushing it a bit too far 😀
Nah… If the F-16 and the Mig-21 can be mongrelized (pun) into so many Asian variations, why not the Bk117?
Anything new regarding the 10 new build M2Ks for the IAF? I believe Steve T. mentioned that 6 or 8 of them are already on the tarmac. An update would be appreciated.
UH-60 + AH-1Z…
Since the Brits effectively blockaded the island(s) the Argentines were reduced to using the subs as stealth cargo ships to supply the ground forces on the island(s). During one of these resupply missions a British ASW plane spotted the sub in harbor (surfaced). It was literally a fish in a barrel.
Well the Argentine Navy lost its most potent weapons rather ridiculously. I am talking about the subs. Once the subs were dispatched the carriers had a much easier time.
IIRC, HAL announced that the rate of production would be increased so that all of the 140 MKIs will be built by 2014.
BTW, is it true that the first flight of the HAL MKI will be around 2006? Also, is the prod line at HAL for the MKI and the engines up yet?
