GeorgeJ, you are a sneaky devil. You stuck in a “+” after the 190. Do you know something and not sharing 🙂
Hmm… replacing 300 a/c with 125. That doesn’t comply with the IAF goal of increasing its sqdn strength.
The rest of the numbers could be filled in with increased LCA orders.
So, contrary to popular belief, the acquisition of M2K5-II could mean an increase in LCA orders. Right now about 250 LCAs are supposed to be for the IAF, that number could then go up to 350 or more.
Maybe they were doing some ACM and got a little too low, even with the deck being xxxx ft.

Fantastic idea of the Ohio SSGN conversion. Whoever thought of that should be promoted. Wonder why they’re sitting on their hands now.
No one is sitting on the SSGN conversion issue 😉
The Ohio (726) is already in Puget Sound undergoing refit
I thought Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) was approached for playing JB.
6000 ppl gave up their lives or were ordered to give up their lives?
kfadrat, nice pic of Saruman
😀
The UPGs have limited AG role. There’s a pic of one of them with a TV guided bomb. So the UPG could be used for some CAS ops.
As far as usefulness, I would pick the UPG because of the limited multirole capability, BVR, and HMS+R-73 combo which exists now.
The PGs being newer frames with newer engines also have their advantages as well.
BTW, has there ever been a case of a Mig-21 facing off with a Mig-21 clone?

god..they’re cheap….(Price-Performance Ration) , how the hell did you manage MKIs at that price?
It’s called “building them at HAL” 🙂 Why do you think the IAF likes their a/c to be built at HAL? Cuz it lowers the unit cost.
Also, a lot of the tech in the MKI wasdeveloped and will be incorporated into the LCA. So, the R&D costs for those elements were already sunk under the LCA head but the MKI benefits from it. Not only that, the Mig-27 and Jag upgrades are also getting LCA tech hence, HAL has been awarded the upgrade contracts for both a/c even though the Israelis and the Russians were aping for it. HAL could do the equivalent job at a cheaper price with Indian stuff. No brainer, IMO.
$1.5 bil also includes the training of IAF pilots in UK along with guaranteed product support for 25-35 yrs. The Brits probably asked a lot for the product support knowing that it was critical requirement for the IAF. Also, the money includes transfer of tech for local manufacture/assembly of not just the airframe but also the subsystems as well.
But, it’s true that it is expensive. That $1.5 bil would have bought 50 more MKIs.

a trinity of big deals is signed phalcon, gorshkov, hawk.no more big deals in near future unless iaf wants more Mirage2000s.
Well, after the elections, the Scorpene thing will be picked up again along with the artillery deal(s) concerning the towed, wheeled, and tracked guns. Although there were murmurs about the Bhim-T6 being pretty much a go already.
So before the calendar yr is out, there could still be about $2-3 billion more deals being signed.
The first jets would arrive at around 35 months after signing of final contract. All of the initial 24 jets should be delivered by 55 months of signing the contract. Then HAL would start producing the rest.

What is the significance of this deal? Is it really as big a thing as Gorkskov?
Money wise, it’s bigger. Gorshkov was $1.1 bil with the 16 Mig-29Ks and 8 Ka-28/31 included. The Hawk deal is $1.65 bil for 66 jets and the training of 75 IAF pilots in UK before delivery.
Now these would make a good weapons in FIBUA roles. Probably a lot more survivable than anything else, I’d imagine.
Didn’t Qatar state that the M2K were definitely not for sale?
