    RE: Flight’s to Holguin, Cuba

I shall take your advice on this one, I have flown internally in Russia with Aeroflot (Tupolev 134) I had a work colleague tell me that I must have a death wish !! I was single then and I now have a family, so I will try with the other airline who operate ATR 42’s. Thank you for your advice.

    RE: TAX

Oh and with smaller airports its the reverse, they charge more because they are small and don’t have many flights, seems daft I know, you think they would lower the costs to increase revenue and get more people to travel.

    RE: TAX

This is the clever bit, The tax and charges are collected by the airline, kept in a bank account (Surprise surprise) one which earns interest, the money then gets divided into whatever pot i.e. PSC for LHR or LGW, the UK tax goes to the govt, but I could not find out how the foreign countrys get there money, someone in my finance dept at work would not reaveal that to me. With security charges again they would not tell me how it gets paid. What I do know is that the UK tax has to be cross refered with the bookings made, so they want to know how many flights taken and the govt cross refer that with the amount of money collected, it can be very easily manipulated, from what i gather.

    RE: Civilian Airband scanners

I know you can not listen to a airband radio inflight, it apparently affects the electronics, untill recently they would not let you use a laptop (I think). I was in the flightdeck on a flight and the captain told me that if someone puts on a radio/laptop/mobile phone they know and will alert a cabin crew member. He would not tell me though how they would know? Probably to do with affecting there radar/radio waves, but again a scanner is on the same frequency so it should not affect this. Ask Softlad he is cabin crew I think and he might know the answer or at least find out, and I will try and find out myself.

RE: What was your first flight?

I remember mine quite well, On a brand new Monarch 757-200 the reg was either G-MONB/C/D, I am still trying to find out which one it was! I was travelling from Bristol to Malaga in Sept 1984. I remember going into the flightdeck and they had a picture I done at home in the flightdeck, i was really impressed!

    RE: TAX

£10 tax on domestic return or single, does not matter. It is also £10 for EU countries and £20 for non EU single or return. If you travel business class non EU it is £40.00 single or return. The only place in the UK that is tax exempt is if you travel from the channel islands to the UK on a single there would be no tax. But if you purchassed a rtn (i.e JER-LGW-JER) you whould then be subject to tax. There is then in the UK a Passenger Service Charge (PSC) which was introduced in 1999 (Which also coincide’s with the abolished Duty Free) this is levied by the airports. You usally find this charge goes up with the further north or further west you travel as the airports are smaller or don’t have many services as LHR/LGW. But remember as MAN/LPL/BHX get busier this charge will only go up not down as to the level of London airports with the exception of London City which always been expensive. Then after Sep 11 they then introduced security charges as the price of Insurance premiums went up for the airlines, now this is where some tour operators/travel agents/ airlines are a law unto themselves as there is no maximum they can charge, so you could be ripped off as diffrent people charge diffrent prices. Then you have the euopean taxes which are levied, diffrent price with different cities & Counties. Any more info on this and I am happy to help.

This conversation is getting interesting, but is it not meant to be aviation related, not military.

    RE: Malaysia Airlines

Really good on the long haul flight’s, seat back tv’s, good food and booze. They used to have the ninentdo games built into the seat that you play on with the seat back tv, but I am not 100% sure if they still have that. Otherwise you should enjoy your flight. The Internal flight is only on a 737-4, so whatever you whould expect on a 737-4 really. Penang is beautiful though.

    RE: TAX

Does not surprise me, you should see the tax and charges you have to pay if you want to travel to Scandinavia, makes you wonder if it is worth the trip. and if you go to the USA (For example a family of 4) you would end up paying around £50-£60 per person depending on what city you are travelling to, (This is on scheduled flight not charter)

    RE: Check your flight ticket

Depends on the airport code that was used for the flight, any sane Travel agent know’s that SYD is for Sydney Australia, but bless the couple at least they are trying to make the most of it!
