Been looking at Hunters myself but I am not about to buy the entire Humbrol site to get one
Wow what did I start here, however it is fascinating to see what you all come up with 🙂
Hmm Typhoon not so popular but I think I have to add:
Hawker Hurricane
De Havilland Vampire
Supermarine Seafire
(I have had time to think about this) 😀
ah but at least they are in one piece, far too many Good aircraft have been scrapped in this country. as had already been mentioned, they would probably have been scrapped if they were in the uk, neither would have lasted this long in our weather or with the people 🙂
Your absolutely right, however as a fan of the aircraft in question I would prefer to see a more stable long term option.
As you say at least for the moment they are fairly safe and will not suffer the fate of other great planes such as the Woodford Vulcan (which I must pop by and see soon)
It’s another case of who was going to buy and preseve them in the U.K if Savvas hadn’t bought them? I would suggest they have survived at lot longer than they could have potentially done in the U.K. Look at the overall condition of the Duxford MR.3 – certainly not sparkling and thats a preserved aircraft. The environment for preserving aircraft outside is better in Cyprus than the U.K.
True but their current position does not help their cause – sea air is not ideal 🙁
Six months on from the last report on this thread, and the aircraft are still in the same spot, seemingly untouched and slowly rotting away. I saw them a few days ago, and a very sad sight they make. There is not too much hope for them I would say.
Please don’t say that or you will have me devising mad plots to bring them back! 🙂
Just to show off the one at Manchester (I have a soft spot for it as I live up this way and I was part of the volunteer group on the nineties who had the pleasure of cleaning/maintaining her (open days were my favorite)) 😉
I am sure the second image is around 1978/79
I have some cockpit instruments from a Shack that were left over from a renovation and some rejected replica parts made for an Ohka (Cherry Blossom) restoration
Yep I can admit to this and accidentally repainting the wall in my house!
Sorry to be a little late on the boat here but I think i have a few bits and pieces that we collected for a revamp of a cockpit. What is it you need?
H&E gave some baloney story that it was radioactive, so we lost our play thing!.
Radioactive? what were they using her for nuclear testing?
Well even though I understand the reasons behind this I have to say I am totally gutted. 🙁
I have become a major fan of this aircraft after becoming involved with the volunteer maintenance crew of WR960 (Dougal) over in Manchester through the nineties. Luckily I do have the memory of being at Woodford in 1991 at the retirement party for the last six (and seeing that was a wonder in itself).
I have to admit I do sometimes pace about the place plotting a return of the Cyprus Shacks – but that I fear would now be a massive undertaking. 😮
So Mr McHenry I hope you enjoy your retirement over in the sun (you certainly deserve looking after)
Well I don’t know about good reads but I am building a couple of scale aircraft over winter a Lysander and a Shackleton AEW2 – does that count 😉
….the classic aircraft in the North West
Good to see a Mk I in the air – be nice to see her painted and in the skies over the UK
