HurriRV7 I don’t know but will find out.
We are also currently restoring a MkXII RCAF 5447 and the question of wing configuration has come up. We opened up the wing on KZ321 to see how they had installed the extra fuel cells and that will probably be the way the MKXII will be restored but with aluminum tanks. The wing has obviously been heavily modified from original. The cannon are barrels only mounted in the leading edge.
The MKXII is being restored to look like the MKI flown by Willie McKnight of 242 Squadron. The wing on it is stamped as a MKIIB but had also been heavily modified from original.

The information on the Vintage Wings of Canada Hurricane IV states it has has the Rolls Royce Merlin 500-29 developing 1640 hp. The top speed indicated according to that article is 314 mph. Since the MkIV had 350 lbs of additional armour protection the slower top speed could be expected.
The VWC Mk IV has four 20 mm cannons. The Mk IV had the universal wing that could mount different weapons or stores externally using existing armanent circuits or fuel systems. The wing was designed to carry (1)two 303 in guns and two 40 mm Vickers cannons,(2) eight 60 pound rockets and two 303 in guns (3)two 250 lb or 500 lb bombs and two 303 in guns, (4)two 45 or 90 gallon drop tanks and two 303 in guns. Our Mk IV has additional fuel cells installed in place of the cannons.
One of the vets who flew them was telling us that when they fired the cannons it slowed the aircraft by 40 mph. And if one of the guns jammed it would slew it by 30 degrees. When your down at 50 feet or lower ‘it was kind of hair raising”!

The Vintage Wings of Canada Sabre is undergoing the last of the test flights by Paul Kissmann and will soon head up to Cold Lake to be refinished in her Golden Hawk colour scheme. These shots are from the VWC article on the site:

This was the first one I saw over here in Canada, it showed up at the Vintage Wings of Canada open House in Gatineau Quebec.
Eric Dumigan has posted his shot’s including the air to air Dave was right they are amazing. He had the right pilot none better than John Aitken to put the Harvard where you want it. You could hear that Harvard over the eight Merlins as John put it into position. I liked Rob’s comments about the Harvard it has 600 horses, 150 for thrust and 450 for sound!
Its interesting I have never heard the term Battle of Britian Memorial Flight applied to this event offically that is reserved for the good people in the UK, I like Eric’s term Merlin Flight.

Tim’s asked us to provide him with three suggestions and solutions for future events. Can you guys help me what what would you like to see improved or changed? Any suggestions?
Can’t take credit for the pictures a friend let me post them don’t have time for photos when working. Besides you guys do such a better job.
Unfortunately VWOC have crossed the line with the open house format there is no way TC will accept the current format. The big concern is that the great atmosphere will be lost. This is a show put on by the pilots and the quality of people who fly and work on the aircraft shows that. When we showed up first thing in the morning the Canadian Harvard guys were soloing in the Hurricane MkIV and Peter Spence was flying the VWC Spit.
That was the last of the Vintage Wings of Canada open houses they have gone as far as they can with this format. Next year though possibly three full blown airshows maybe with the Snowbirds.
And next year they will add a P40 to the mix, sweet. Mike’s always looking you never know what will end up on the hangar floor next, but he’s almost out of room. I find it interesting that Rob almost always fly’s the Hurricane with the canopy open must ask him why one of these days.

Great Video, and not just cause I’m in it!
There are only two open houses scheduled at Vintage wings this year the next one will be for the Battle of Britian Weekend Sept. 20th. there should be some interesting aircraft available for that one.
The intent was to keep things low key this year in anticipation of events in 2009 the 100th anniversary of flight in Canada. However their airshow schedule looks fairly busy.
I like the idea that they aren’t airshows it gives a more relaxed flavour and lets you talk with the pilots about their experiences.
This was Paul Kissman’s first flight in the Corsair, I hesitate to say solo as how else can you check out in a single seat fighter. He seemed to have little problems mastering this beast. Mind you he is a graduate of the Empire Test Pilots School in Boscombe Down, England.
This weekends event at CWH in Hamilton should bring some of that flavour back.
Here are a couple of the inflight shots of the Corsair, Spitfire and Mustang,
Mk XVI SL721 then I’m partial!

Really enjoyed Bill McCrae’s story. We were working on the Hurricane that day and he came over to chat with us. On looking at the Hurricane in her current state he commented that if he knew it looked like that underneath the skin he would never have gotten into it!
A real gentleman from the last great generation.
