As it’s a “J” they obviously called for a push start.

Yeah I know …. I’ll get me coat
As a new to the squadron (Herc’s) rookie I was given the task of pulling the ground power from a RAAF Mirage after the start. Nobody had told me about wet starts and as I was straight from apprentice course had never worked the flightline before (or night shift).
So there I was sitting under the Mirage in the dark scared witless about the intakes sucking me in when I exited from under the A/C, hearing all sorts of noises as they tried to get her to light. After two failed attempts she spun up but I could hear/feel a strange rumble from the A/C. I’m sitting there watching the Fire Guard waiting for the signal to pull the GPU when all of a sudden it got very bright and hot behind me. I turned round and there was a fireball exiting the tail pipe and walking across the tarmac. I find I’m suddenly standing beside the Fire Guard in front of the A/C wondering why he’s not doing anything.
He gives the pilot the thumbs up, hands me the Fire Bottle and casually wanders over to pull the GPU cable. A/C departs as if nothing has occurred.
In the Flightline hut the Sarge tells me that if she hadn’t started that time I’d have been up in the tailpipe with a rag mopping up the excess AVTUR before they would have tried another start.

I don’t see why any EF series lens would not work on a EOS film body. In fact the Canon site says that the EOS30 is compatible with over 50 EF lenses.
It will not be compatible with the EF-S lens series which is designed for the 1.6 crop format digital cameras.

When you use a converter it reduces the light available to the camera by either 1 stop for the 1.4x converter or 2 stops for the 2x converter.
I know that on most Canon DSLR cameras they will stop autofocussing reliably over F5.6 so if your lens has a wide open value of F4 and you add a 1.4x converter you may loose the AF function as the lens is now effectively a F5.6. It does not stop you manual focussing the lens but if you are shooting something that requires a constant focus change as you pan with it (airshow shooting) this can be a PITA.
I use the Kenko 2x Pro converter and it does the job well (at least as can be expected). All converters affect the Image Quality in some way.

While I cannot add anything to the subject of this thread I am amazed by the number of forumites that have a link to Grantham. My dad’s family is from there and I lived there for 5 years as a child (66-71).
I would love to know more about Grantham aviation history if there is any (RAF Spitlgate etc.)

Welcome Peter,
For those who don’t know Pete he is the Chief Engineer at Temora Aviation Museum and is responsible for the the maintenance of a great collection of live museum exhibits.
If any of you manage to visit Oz try to make the effort to attend one of Temora’s flying days. It’s well worth the effort (IMO) even though is a bit off the main tourist circuit. Pete will be there and is quite easy to spot, just look for the big guy with the shorts, it does not matter whether it’s summer or winter he always wears them. Say hello and give him and his team a pat on the back for the job that they do.
Wardie
A slightly biased Temora fan.
Now, Now James. I’m suprised that you did not pick up that No.9 A Fern Leaf is also the same as No.5
Thanks RobAnt,
I see your point re the size of #2. I looked at it on my daughters PC which has a smaller screen resolution than the one I use to photoshop just now and straight away see what you say. I’ll keep that in mind for future edits that are to be posted.
My shots are not in the same league as Glen’s but at least as I learn I have Glens’s great examples as a standard to aim for.

That’s right Mike J.
Obviously too easy!!!!
I’ll have to dig through my archives when I get home later and do some cropping/disguising of the source. Still may not be too hard but I’ll try to see what I can do.
Wardie
Ok, I’ll give it a whirl. Can anyone tell me what this old girl is?

Wardie
It’s painted as Halestorm but is actually “Winston” ex UK.
I think that it would be Meteor F.8 VZ467 VH-MBX flown by ex F-18 driver Darren “Buster” Crab who is Canadian by birth. Location would be Temora NSW, Australia.

Not sure of the year, may have been 1965-66. Could have been RAF Gaydon. Saw the prototype Harrier (Kestrel?) perform. Was absolutely gobsmacked by the noise and blasted by debris when it hovered right in front of us. It seemed to be only few 10’s of metres away from the crowd line at the time. To me it felt that it was right over us.

From what I saw of you in the weekend your are not a 3XL like me. If I got in there I would be there until the next major servicing.
Re the PM – I did and will contact you soon via that email.
Luckily neither of us could fit in that turret. James is way too tall and I’m shorter but too round. The crew who manned those positions must have been small and slim.

As an idea of size there is a Webley pistol holster hanging to the left of the turret.
