I don’t know why I wrote C-4 on the first list..I think I intended to put C-45 and forgot. I also forgot the ME-108 is in the hanger as well. This is the list of the ones that I know are flown. Many of the other ones that I took off are flyable but aren’t flown anymore for various reasons.

    PV-2
    C-45
    T-6 (2)
    PT-19
    Kate replicas (2)
O-2 (waiting on an engine change and then it will fly again)
    L-5
    C-47
    F-24
    L-6
    Swift (2)

As of an hour ago when I left, the planes in the hangar were:
    PV-2
    C-4
    T-6 (2)
    PT-19
    Kate replicas (2)
    Iskra
    O-2
    L-5
    Storch
    Swordfish
    C-47
    R4B
    OH-13
    F-24
    L-6
    I-16
    Swift (2)

    Outside:
    PV-2
    F-111
    AT-11 (project)
    F-14
    F-105
    F-100
    F-4
    UH-1
    AH-1

Most of the planes in the hangar belong to other CAF units and aren’t usually on display in the museum hangar. If you are coming to Texas for the airshow in October then you are coming when there will be the most planes on display. Other than airshow time the pickings are pretty slim in the museum hangar.

None of the bombers live there so the rare visit to HQ is the only time you will find them there. “FIFI” and Diamond Lil live in Addison full time although we are taking “FIFI” to Florida for the first tour of the season on Thursday.

I generally won’t bother with a search function unless I know something is likely to show up. Such as a particular conversation that I remember but can’t find. Generally though, I’ll just ask the question and hope somebody can answer for me. I really don’t care if it was discussed twenty pages and two years ago. I’m probably be looking for current information anyhow and that could easily have changed from the last conversation.

Telling somebody to use the search function instead of just ignoring the question if you don’t know the answer always seems like the “I have a secret” way of telling somebody that you have the information but don’t want to tell them.

I do believe a Lightning will eventually fly here in the US but, sadly, thats probably about it. The example we had (ZF 597) was sold on to Canada a few years back but I enjoyed putting it back together for static when we got it. I guess it could have flown again and we did have those intentions. But, the farther I dug into the airplane the quicker we found out that was way beyond our means.

The aircraft was flying happily -the trim tab came off and it went out of control.

At the risk of being accused of speculation and being called a rubbernecker or some other such thing, I’d like to correct a part of your statement, but only in the interest of keeping the story as straight as possible.

The trim tab didn’t actually come off until Jimmy was just short of totally inverted when the plane rolled near the top. It did break, causing the climb and deployment of the tail wheel, but it didn’t actually come off until later in the sequence. Not that any of this matters that much, and it’s a minor point, but I just want to keep the known facts as accurate as possible.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the death toll climb slightly higher as the DNA testing continues. One of my aquaintences just…ceased to exist…as a result of being directly in line with the impact.

It’s a sad deal for all concerned but if the races continue, I’ll be there next year.

    Thanks very much:)
Thats a strange mag switch panel, not seen one like that before. Maybe its to changed due to the new custom engines.

    Keith.

We changed it out of necessity when we hung the new engines. Going from a high tension ignition system to a low tension system required a different switch.

If anybody has access to the pictures from the accident (the ones that were pulled) I’d appreciate seeing them. Please send me a private message.

We (C-17s) dropped 1,000 troops from the 173rd Airborn Brigade into Northern Iraq at the end of March 2003. We also dropped lots of equipment that same night as well.

All part of the show, he immediately drops the aileron and the show commentator pretends he is out of control…well cool! Uses the dihedral affect with rudder to great effect (oh dear the grammar police will probably come down on me now!!) 🙂

That’s Kent Pietsch from Minot, North Dakota. He’s a super nice guy and puts on some of the best airshow performances you will ever see. Back in August I was out in mid-field helping with the pyro during the Abbotsford airshow. Every time Kent would come by, he would get closer and closer to us. I intended to take pictures, but he kept filling up the viewfinder and I always dropped the camera as I was taking the shot. Unfortunately all I have is a lot of blurry pictures of him smiling at me over the nose! Same went for Bud Granley’s Fouga and Harvard routine.

    Alan,

I live here in Charleston SC. If you come this direction, get in contact with me and I’ll be glad to show you around. I’m in the USAF, so I can get yall on base to look at the static display planes and possibly one of my C-17s if your interested. Patriot’s Point has previously been mentioned and it’s well worth the trip. It’s about twenty minutes away from the base. There is lots of other historic stuff here in town as well. The Confederate submarine CSS Hunley is here, The Civil War started here and parts of the American Revolution were fought here as well.

The WIX embargo, as mentioned before, was to give time for the family to be notified.

The family has now been notified and the accident is now public knowledge.

[QUOTE=F3Hadlow]It was a superb display. Flown in a very spirited manner but I never once thought that the aircraft or pilot was being pushed to the limits. Two of my shots of it’s display at Leuchars last weekend…[QUOTE]

I’m sure the display was great and I don’t doubt the pilot is quite capable of doing the manuevers. However, if he is doing anything the book says not to do, (I didn’t see the display, so I’m not sure) he is busting an aircraft limitation. Therefore, flying the aircraft beyond it’s limits. A technicality? Perhaps, but it’s an undisputable point. I hope it doesn’t take a structural failure someday to prove that!

    Beautiful pictures though!

The FAA flight manual comes pretty much directly from the military manuals that say:

    AN 01-40AJ-1
Pilot’s Handbook for Army Models A-26B and A-26C airplanes.
    Section II, NORMAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
    Page 39.
    FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS.
    a. MANEUVERS PROHIBITED.
    (1) Loops
    (2) Spins
    (3) Rolls
    (4) Inverted Flight.

    Page 53
    Paragraph 15.
    ACROBATICS
    Acrobatics are stictly prohibited.

    T.O. 1A-26A-1 (Formerly T.O. 1B-26K-1)
    Section 5, Operating Limitations
    Page 5-5
    PROHIBITED MANEUVERS
Spins or acrobatic maneuver are prohibited.

    MANEUVER LIMITATIONS

The symmetrical load factor capability is 4.4G from the minimum flying weight to 33,000 pounds, decreases linearly to 3.75G at 36,000 pounds, then is constant to the maximum gross weight. Etc. Etc.

The rolling pullout load factor capability is 3.2G from the minimum flying weight to 33,000 pounds, constant to the maximum gross weight.

    Section VI, Flight Characteristics
    Page 6-3
    MANEUVERING FLIGHT

Acrobatics are prohibited in this aircraft.
    …………………………………………………………….
Of course, the manual for the TBM says not to do aerobatics either, but I know for a fact that one has been intentionally rolled. Is the A-26 capable of doing the aformentioned prohibited maneuvers? Of course it is. Any plane is capable of doing slow rolls is you keep withing the G limitations. But the book says not to. I’m sure the engineers that designed the plane had a good reason. How they came to that conclusion I don’t know. I’ve also seen the A-20 Havoc do a roll, a couple of years before it’s unfortunate loss back in the 80s. As Mr. Duck put it, “Stay inside the box”.

Mark 12, I’ve heard much the same statement from Connie myself. He sure has had a colorful flying career. I hope it all ends up on paper someday. On a semi related topic, I’ve also heard a P-47 pilot say that he was passed by an A-26 at altitude and lost sight of him before ever being able to catch up.

Feel free to take any pictures you want. They were all on the military side of Kuwait International Airport.
