Here is the Douglas DC-3 lies in the vast Taymyr. Just want to say that the photos not mine, in local networks they wander somewhere already one and a half to two years, the author of these photos could not be found. Armed with the number engraved on the tail of the plane, climbed into the depths of the Russian Internet, and zabugornogo, but managed to learn a bit about this machine, at the end of the post.

Engine no. 1 lost at landing

    and zavernulo under the wing

Engine No. 2 stayed in place, notice that the blades are not bent, nor this nor the first engine, therefore the engines didn’t work, then perhaps forced landing occurred because of a fuel.

    Engine. View from the side

    Krupnyj plan

The chassis were also released. Over the years they have gone almost entirely into the soil.

Tail. Hull number 232892, about the stars, 378-Lee-Lee 578

The tail of the other. From the tissue that was stretched to the Governors of the planes there was not a trace.

A fragment of the dashboard, instrument of expropriated for memory.

    Commander’s station.

Armed with the number engraved on the tail of the plane, climbed into the depths of the Russian and Zabugornogo the Internet and here is that managed to learn about this plane.

    The Douglas C-47-DL, serial number 42-32892, factory-9118.
The aircraft was handed over to the United States AIR FORCE February 24, 1943, SOVIET AIR FORCE handed over March 12, 1943, where he was credited as “USSR-n-328.
Was originally 7-th Aviation Regiment 1 Polar-Polar aviation Division.
According to order No. OK/071 from April 16, 1943, seconded to the Office of polar aviation to conduct ice reconnaissance.
In the period from 22 October to 10 November 1943. produced pozdneosennûû exploration of ice of the Kara Sea, running the pilot M.a. Titlova
In the period from 30 June until July 24, 1944 flew flights from the base at Anderme, in the same way for the production of intelligence of ice of the Kara Sea.
Since 1945, was part of the Chukotka formations of polar aviation.
    Next, got the number l-3072.

That’s what Vadim Denisov in the book writes “unbeknownst to Norilsk”
“Emergency villages April 13, 1947, r. Dudypty, North of the village. Settlements-refusal of the left engine. Got good and “sat” twenty days, until they were discovered by the crew of f. Shatrova. 28 people survived: some minor frostbite hands and face (mostly children). Commander Tyurikov, radio officer Smirnov and seven passengers disappeared-had gone in search of assistance at the snow-covered tundra and did not return. “

    Special thanks to vulkan_avia
for the link to the story of that flight. Material taken from here http://www.polarpost.ru/forum/viewtopic.php? p = p15141 # 15141

    THE SKY OF ALL LATITUDES
    Aircraft to leave. ..

In the Cabinet of the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper “air transport” Vasiliya Mihailovicha journalist Evgeny Karpiâ joined Konoplyov, now that year engaged in searching for victims in the accident aircraft, in the hope that they might be and traces Levanevskogo. A lot of planes was discovered by him and his Brigade across the most immense North, but none belonged to the missing crew. Is a paradox: the tragedy of the crew knows the whole world, Levanevskogo, however not found remnants of the aircraft; the tragedy of the crews of most of the aircraft were found are unknown until today remained unsolved mystery.
Is good to have a magical device, “the time machine” — touched them to any object, and then on the TV screen, it’s history, is dreamily Kanaplyou said.
Yes, that would be great, but we journalists to dig out from the people of mysteries, is returned to the reality of a dreamer Mironenko.
-And what about the plane, found in the Voločanki area, will I be able to work for the Taymyr “time machine” and reveal his secrets, I intervened.
Is The stalker and the beast flees, as saying hunters. Arsent′ič, you have the floor. Listen carefully, is immediately found Mironenko.
    Board the l-3072
It started approximately like Levanevskogo. April 13, 1947, the airport took the usual radiogram flying Khatanga aircraft: “Board l-3072.
Pass your point. Height of 3000 metres. Everything is in order, but denied the right generator motor. Shore batteries “.
Failure of one of the generators does not speak about the need to terminate the flight: there’s still a generator on the left engine, which provides safe continued flying. So much excitement “for dispatching service, especially to the point of first landing in Dudinka airport fly no more than two and a half hours on the way there are alternate aerodrome. But an hour later, Dudinka, Igarka airport Khatanga took an alarming radiogram: “All … All … Everything. Board the l-3072. Rejected left motor … go lower. On the calculation of Settlements ahead … It is not. The shore batteries.Watch Out … “
Twenty minutes were taken scraps of radiograms and. .. only Hatangoj. The signals are very weak — you can see everything that could give the waning batteries: “…go … landing … our snow-covered … DRA … ” More radio signals.
Among the missing passengers were miners, aircraft oil workers and other specialists of the coal and oil exploration, women and children. All in a hurry to leave, imagining himself at the sunny South or grandmother in the village and not knowing what fate awaits them after a few hours …
The plane later learned was overloaded beyond measure. In addition to legitimate passengers aboard were six-six “furry stowaway hares” (as they were called), the “hunting” which began in the spring of 1950. The crew of the crashed plane only remember the name Commander Turikova and flight radiotelephone operator Smirnova. The crew was a co-pilot and flight engineer.
…V poiskah propavshego aircraft crews participated in Krasnoyarsk civil aviation authority, but to no avail. The crew was sent from Moscow experienced polar pilots Vladimir Vasilyevich Malkova by plane, equipped with ski gear. From the Khatanga searches directed the famous Arctic pilot, hero of the Soviet Union Fedor Anisimoviču Shatrova philanthropist. With his words and I know this history in detail.
Already within twenty days of persistent searches on all were likely destinations.
Nu, Volodya, propose today to go with tacks at ninety degrees, like everywhere, obšarili their Navigator Vladimir advises Shatrov Tulin — the weather is good. Yes, kakjj is our flight on the account?
    Is the twenty-first, Fedor Anisimovich.
Is the twenty-first, you say? “Maybe this time lucky. Couldn’t they fall through the Earth!
Flew, as always, from Khatanga. Weather great, brightly shining whiteness of snow rescue svetofil′trovye glasses. On kustikam, enclosing the meandering shores, a thinly veiled River small rivulets. Lakes on the map a lot, but they are difficult to discern under snow cover.
One hundred kilometres in a straight line, were then started to walk on tacks in the forty kilometers and the other side of the course. While not seen anything suspicious, but the white silence of the North any black point must be clearly visible.
In flight, two meteorologists — attended the ladies Khatanga Weather Bureau. The pilot cabin was an exchange of views on the variability of Arctic weather, good weathers in the springtime and the microclimate of the Khatanga polyarnyh letchikov have a belief proved that if there’s no weather for landing at airports, and Hatangoj is not even a radio, you still go in Khatanga, weather for a successful landing will be. Young weather forecasters started this phenomenon to prove from a theoretical point of view. but then the conversation intervened co-driver Thulin:
    — Fellow pilots, the next course is three hundred and thirty-five, tack room, seven, on the horizon, even the partridges are not visible. Shows like Levanevskomu Ginzburg was gone. Riddle?
In less than five minutes flight with the new has, when suddenly — how many of these “suddenly” in the lives of the pilots! -flight engineer Leo Golutvin (Incidentally, always somehow bortmehaniki see first what you want to see NPV), which currently is not interested, you can see the lecture on meteorology, somehow quietly reports simultaneously pointing forward
-Commander! With your hand, look forward and to the left, watching three black dots!
-Where? Yup, here, I see! Good job! And in General, not the bushes? No, not maybe in bushes do not seem … I manage with autopilot, Tents — and continues to decline sending aircraft to the point that she saw a black quickly turn into mašuŝih the hands of people. Hear behind the choir “Hooray!”. Present in the pilot cabin separately suggest: “it’s the same people, Yes, of course, people from the plane — the other cannot be!Commander, come on their trail, it is well visible. “Making the circle over and shake them three wings, went on their way. Who are these three?Crew members? Passengers? … And five-seven kilometers on a white background of snow the dark Whopper is a standing on the wheels. Pass low over him, turned around and was myself yell: “Hurrah!” from the plane begins to pour people. Alive! Eh, it’s a pity that our aircraft wheels, that’s when the skies are needed — sat down immediately. What is going on. Dropped a few sleeping bags, three sealed boxes of NZ (sacred stock). Radio officer Paul Doctors contacted by radio Voločankoj, reported the find. Tulin took pelengi from Khatanga and Voločanki and by defining the coordinates found the plane, said Hatange. That, in turn, reported nahotke in Dixon crew Malkova.
Visual binding have decided to go out on the River, at its characteristic Hetu bend near the confluence of the River Great Romaniha. At the airport we are greeted as winners of the Khatanga River, only without the Orchestra — did not find any.
All done: missing plane found. The next day, the crew received the coordinates of places Malkova forced landing of aircraft Tyurikova easily found the victims. Showed their art Navigator Ivan Kukhar-fired landed near finds and podrulili.
How many happy tears! Strangers hugged and kissed their saviours of Overgrown men, tearful women and children. “A bit of a tear without prošibla from such a scene” — Vladimir VASILEVICH told me.
What was the reason of the incident? The flight engineer told the plane found
-Screw the left motor when its refusal did not entered in vane. We began to decline. Right motor slaved manual, but his forces were not enough for horizontal flight. The Voločankoj was not, and was not, of course, and radioprivoda. Under us rasstilalas′ snow-covered tundra. Tyurikov ventured down to let out the chassis in the hope to fix the failed motor and fly away, if they are lucky. But, alas, no luck. “
Sat happily, even the nose is not pulled, but where the sat — had no idea. During the decline had crossed the River, taking her for Boganidu, which is near the Kheta River flows into the Voločanki. Woods was supposed to appear, but neither has happened. The Boganida River is gone somewhere to the left, and instead the forest-white tundra. Pointing To a map, determined that the Boganidu River Dudyptu is accepted, landed north of Voločanki, and report their whereabouts do not have funds: batteries were left without electricity, as they say, “sit down”. After examination of the failed engine made sure that he can not be repaired. Decided to rearrange a working motor generator with broken hope run motor and pass their landing place, but … After all the effort the engine failed to start. Is hoped that we will seek and find. As you can see, we were not wrong, but how much it took time, time, time doubt anxious waiting, hope and despair — find? …
All huddled in the fuselage. Collected from passengers not densely worked products. Ate from a total boiler products quickly melted away.Tyurikov Radioman with Smirnov failed in a week and decided to go south to the River to get to Dudypta River it to one of the settlements.Dudypta River flowed in great river, at the mouth of the Pyasina River where there was a large village Dudypty crosses. We persistently persuaded them not to leave by plane — the sad experience, experience. But our persuasions failed, we didn’t listen. They were joined by another seven people from passengers and have gone nowhere, disappeared without a trace.
By the end of the second week ran out mostly foods began hungry period. Another week has passed, failed three of the passengers had gone in the same direction. They also urged not to leave, but they had “come to the River:, nalovim fish …”
During this time, not a single aircraft proletalo. Be sure that we are looking for, but is not there. And all of a sudden …
…After touching meeting people randomly pulled us into the plane. And everything (there were twenty-eight, counting those who fish went and came back, not far away from your own things). Had to explain that our plane though and similar to them, but with fewer and that take full advantage of all there is as they say, have passed “medical treatment” hunger, “but things will bring you the second flight. Agreed. Nearly all the passengers were healthy, some have minor frostbite hand, people (mostly children). All twenty-eight were taken to Voločanku — sat on the frozen lake 4 km north of the village. From there, the rescued passengers were taken to the Nenets reindeer village, where they were fed, they were warmed …
VOT Takaya istoriya plane found north of Voločanki. Missing Commander Tyurikov, radio officer Smirnov and seven passengers. Law of the North — to leave the emergency aircraft cannot be tantamount to death!

Anyone know what happened with the Phantom at Leeming please? I used to see it in a maintenance compound on the airfield next to the road but it’s been gone a while now. Lots of hits on a web search but no up to date info I can find.

    Cheers

According to Demobbed it was last seen at Leeming June 2012.

And where does it say that you have to stick at the same job all your life?

    Retire? Why should I?

In 9 weeks time I will reach my “Double Majority”, 42 years with the same company (ok its changed names a couple of times).

“Retire? Why should I?” If they want to keep paying me, I don’t have to find a real job for the first time in my life, I just keep turning up in the morning.:diablo::diablo:

Leeds to Liverpool is 75 miles, ***********, neither of which is likely to take 6 hours.

You have obviously never driven along the M62 in or between the rush hours.

Leeds to Manchester can take 1.5 to 2 hours, and thats only 40 miles. The 20 odd miles from Manchester to Liverpool can take anything over an hour some days, and both these are at times when there isn’t an accident somewhere along the way.

The B.17 is of course Sally B.

First registered in the UK as G-BEDF 5 August 1976.

Without spending a few days going through all my photos I cannot remember the date when it was repainted from silver into the camo scheme it carries now. But I am sure someone else here can remember.
