Remember that mission tanker support for F/A-18s was provided by land-based USAF tankers.
Will PLANAF provide land-based mission tanking for J-15s?
That is true about the tanker support. Considering that tanker support in the PLAAF is still in its infancy it would be interesting to see how PLAAF tanker support takes place. On a related note where would the PLAAF tankers stage from? Any thoughts?
America is trying to prevent the formation of a caliphate in the middle east. Preventing this formation helps China too. Problems in Xinjiang would grow much worse if China directly intervened Iraq in any way. Already the Islamic peoples of that region are growing closer to their more radical jihadist brothers in other parts of the middle east.
The Uighur-led Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) and its closely allied Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has been working hard to expand their jihad across the border from Afghanistan and Pakistan into China. The establishment of the caliphate in Syria and Iraq would greatly help achieve TIP goals.
I caution you not to be smug about events that are happening in Iraq and think that it is only a problem of the west. China is at risk too.
I am not sure what it has to do with Carrier. Carrier is practically useless in such situation. becauase the fight is in Northern Iraq or near to Syrian border. which is faraway from sorties from Carrier in Persian gulf. If China really want to help they can still send all the UAVs and ground equipment through An-124/IL-76.
Chinese tanks can be offloaded from Central Asian to Iran Caspian ports and goes all the way by train/transporters to Iraq. They can deploy 60 to 70 Su-30/JH-7 to Iraq airbase with direct flight from China.
With tanker support USN aircraft ranged all over Iraq during the two Gulf wars. Carrier air operations were necessary
This Iraq thing is stressing the West out greatly as they see trying to take over the world oil supply in the Iraq War has come back to haunt them. Hey if it didn’t bother the US, why are they sending “advisors” in to help? Who to root for? ISIS, a terrorist organization that Al Qaeda sees as too extreme for them or the Iran backed Shiites. Looks like FUBAR for the US either way.
However the west does not depend so greatly on Iraqi oil as China does. Also China stands to lose a great amount of money invested in projects if the jihadists evict China from Iraq. Chinese workers have already been forced to run to safety to avoid being overrun by ISIS.
BEIJING—More than 1,200 Chinese workers trapped by the violence sweeping parts of Iraq this past week have been moved to safety in the Iraqi capital, the Chinese government said Saturday.
In this instance though, as with most others in China’s sphere, power projection scarcely needs aircraft carriers. Whats to stop the PLA rolling two armoured divisions on to commercial hulls, steaming straight on in to Umm Qasr and offloading right into the road march north?. As stated they HAVE the soft-power to not require kick-in-the-door forced entry anywhere they realistically have interests.
The carrier is necessary when there is no friendly local basing or where the strategic situation is such that multiple strike axis are significantly important. In most cases the Chinese will have local basing and there will need to be a significant opfor, not to mention a lot of workup time for Chinese forces, before they are ready for coordinated multi-axis sea & land based strike.
What local basing could China use to “kick in the door” as you termed it if they needed air support to pull Chinese nationals out of Iraq?
This Iraq thing is stressing China out greatly as they see trying to play the super power game on the cheap just doesn’t work. And since China imports a significant amount of oil from Iraq an interruption of Iraqi oil will be greatly felt. The inability of the PLAN to project power troubles China.
Could Iraq Be Another Libya for China?
Andrea Ghiselli, “Could Iraq Be Another Libya for China?” The Diplomat, 24 June 2014.
The crisis in Iraq again reveals the costs of China’s low military profile in the region.
On June 13, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying declared that China is closely watching the events unfolding in Iraq and paying special attention to the protection of Chinese […]

This be the US Navy. Note the absense of helmets, flotation vests and basis eye protection gear.
As anyone can plainly see flight operations are not being conducted. During flight operations when aircraft are moving around the deck full safety gear is mandatory. Otherwise you will die. Here are a couple of videos that hopefully will educate you of how dangerous the flight deck really is

In this old carrier safety film you can see how things have evolved. Note how these older flight deck crew are dressed like you see on Russian carriers and on the Vikramaditya. Hope these Indian Navy personnel don’t have to learn safety the hard way. America’s lessons were learned in blood.

Here the American navy shows how it is done. No one can match the tempo or efficiency of the American carriers.

Finally we do it Gangnam style

Even the girls do it right

Not everyone in the world has the same safety standards like western world…
When you attempt to cut corners on the flight deck you are not able to carry out high tempo operations like the US Navy. Lower safety standards equal injury or death. At the end of the day its your call.
my head hurts….
meanwhile where is the US air support?
They have promised action haven’t they? US aircraft flying alongside Iran and Syria. So, next we need the Russians to get involved overtly and then the whole world will be on it’s head.
Answer: America does not want to become Iran’s air force.
Ahem, safety shoes are standard issue.
Safety goggles are also issued.
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/NAVY/Images/Harrier21.jpgThey are are wearing protection as specified by their zone of operation.
If you say so. It appears to me that the deck crewman standing close to that Harrier is without head protection or a floatation vest. But as I said earlier if the Indian Navy wants to play fast and loose with safety on the deck who am I to raise my voice?
I’m going to leave the subject for others to debate.
Time has told Rooivalk. These aren’t inexperienced newcomers like the Chinese…they have more than 40yrs experience of their own in carrier operations and have access to best practice from every navy with established fixed wing naval air. You rather suspect a lack of PPE for the flight deck crews would hardly be through 4 decades of not noticing their merits.
Since you mentioned the Chinese and their carrier operations you should note that the Chinese are trying to get off on the right foot. The Indian navy should review their carrier deck procedures. It would save them much future grief and injury.
This is the Indian navy operating aircraft off the INS Vikramaditya. Note the lack of safety equipment.

Here is how they should be doing it

If you are familiar with carrier operations in any way you will notice that Indian Navy crewmen are lacking head protection, floatation vests, basic eye protection and it appears steel toed work shoes. How the Indian Navy runs their carriers is their business, but they are playing a dangerous game with the lives and safety of their deck crew. And taking in to account the long history of the Indian navy operating carriers it cannot be excused.
They should know better.

The deck crew is lacking safety equipment. Namely head protection, gloves, and floatation vests. It would seem that their association with the US Navy would give them a head’s up on that issue. Time will tell
So the recent riots in Vietnamese cities against (perceived) Chinese interests were an example of Vietnamese aggression towards China?
Don’t be silly.
I can’t stand the host, but Polygon is a great series.
MiG-29K sure is a pretty bird.
Can’t wait to see them flying off the Kuzya regularly:
You are correct, The MiG-29K is a cutie!
