Oh my god! When I saw that picture of the old Reds my heart skipped a beat. It was like being back in the 70’s at Biggin Hill. Beautiful.

The writing on the side of this plane advertises parachute jumping from this airfield so perhaps it was used for that purpose at some time.

Excellent collection. I particulary like the formation of Phantoms. I hope others take up the challenge of digging out their old photographs.

One of the features of this forum is the excellent quality of the images. It is refreshing, however, to see some ‘old’, pre-digital photographs. Perhaps there should be a new forum for pre-digital photgraphs. There must be thousands out there that could do with dusting off and airing on this site. It would certainly give me the opportunity to scan my collection of 35mm slides.

    Anyone else interested?

(Belfast Truss is just one type of roof truss used)

Oh good grief. I am such a dummy, I know so little. Better start googling belfast truss roofs and learn all about them.

    Belfast Hangers

Going off thread a little bit, but related, is there a website that lists all surviving belfast hangers?

    😮
Got to say I was rather hooked on finding out where the main query pic was taken – this amateur detective stuff is far more interesting than I thought…. 😀

Just wanted to say I am also enjoying this thread. It’s really interesting looking at old photos and comparing them to how they look today. I’ve only read up to this quote so far so I don’t know how it’s going to end yet. I’ll check in later. 🙂

Just picked up my second Spitfire.:)

Sorry. Need a bit of explaining here. You have BOUGHT a SECOND Spitfire? It’s not the sort of thing you buy from ‘Spitfires are us’! Is it genuine or is it a (bearing in mind we are in the middle of James May’s replica prog) replica?

Tony at BH – did you never try fishing line, one end tied to the window latch and the other to the washing line prop, a couple of loops around the plane and then launch, the bangers were timed so that they went off before the plane hit the prop. 😀 I just had to make sure that mother wasn’t hanging out the washing. 😮

Oh wow! That sounds fun. I wish I’d had played around your house. Bet you had Action Man as well? 😀

On the subject of the Airfix 1/24th scale Mossie, check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIiieWvcRK0

Wow! What a cool video. Perhaps they should include a dvd of assembly like that with every kit!

Brilliant prog. I had tears in my eyes at numerous parts of the show (Grace’s Spit shots, the final roll out). Shame they didn’t have a Spit flypast when it was rolled out at the end but seeing the umbrellas on the day it could have been grounded due to bad weather.

And perhaps they should have given the kids a private display of a Spitfire then shown it to them close up once landed. That might have got them a bit more interested.

And as for throwing flaming models out of the bedroom windows, that never did it for me. The models just plummeted to the ground, not even a short glide. Not very realistic. I use to set fire to mine in the garage when my father was at work (stuffed with Bengal matches this time of year). They use to burn with black smoke and black bits use to float around in the air. God knows what damage that did to my lungs all those years ago but it’s all part of growing up. 😀
