Ah yes. I read about that Spitfire. Thought it was in storage till next year but it’s nice to have a ‘local’ Spitfire to see now and then. Thanks for the info.
Sorry to butt in but we use to spend family holidays in Norfolk in the 70’s. 1974 I spent a happy afternoon (don’t think the rest of the family were too happy) at the end of the runway at Coltishall and saw Jaguars and Spit and Hurricane. I wrote to the base after the holiday to see if I could get a closer look the following year.
They replied inviting me to the base in 1975. That year it was just me mum and dad so we went to Coltishall and they let me sit in a Jaguar whilst it was in the hanger. Ah what memories.
If there were any Lightnings there i didn’t notice as I was more interested in Jags then.
Picture taken by my dad 1974. I believe the markings are from Lossimouth.

Spit on the bump
Hey. I was out in the garden today (only a mile or so from Biggin Hill airport) when I heard something ‘big’ taking off. Not the usual private jet but a piston engine. I think you know what i’m going to say next, yes, it was a Merlin. You can tell those things straight away (sigh!). Anyway, as it gained height the pitch increased. A sure sign it is heading my way. And sure enough, over the trees, there she was. Don’t know what mark Spit it was but she was beautiful.
I didn’t go to the BH airshow this year (no Vulcan) and my complimentary tickets to RIAT were washed out so it was nice to have my own little air show in my back garden.
Even if it was oinly a fly past.
I just hope we can record his entire memory (like Joe 90) for the benefit of future generations 😀
Careful Zwitter. Joe 90? Your showing your age! 🙂
None of the many liveries applied to SL674 in its association with Biggin Hill would be considered etc etc etc.
How do you know so much about this Mark12? You are a font of all knowledge!
Tony.
Whilst at 612 Squadron it may have initially still been camouflaged and coded RAS-H, I am doubtful. By its transfer date the order of the day was silver overall and indeed SL674 was silver with red code letters RAS-H.
Mark.
Now THAT’S a pic i’d like to see. Is there one out there??? Tony
Is there a website that shows all the different roundals used? It might make more sense to me then.
Thanks to everyone for this stuff.
Tony.
SL674 markings
Here’s another puzzle for guys. Are the markings correct for this mark of Spit and the year it was produced? I am unsure about the roundals on the fuselage and under the wing and on the tail. Do they all match?
Added in 1987 when it was removed for refurbishment at RAF Abingdon, returned resplendant in 612 (County of Aberdeen) Sqn RAuxAF markings.
I assume Mark 12’s photo was taken just after its return.
HTH
Now I know. Thanks. You lot are the beez neez!!
Many thanks Robert Whitton, great pic.
Now i wonder when the RASH markings were added??
Anyone?
Many thanks Mark12. After seeing some of your posts on here i thought ‘he’s the man who will help me (i assume ur a man of course?).
I cant see any link that says Suprise Act!
Reminder
Hi,
Just a quick reminder that I am after pics of SL674. I thought this would have been the place to get them. Don’t let me down guys.
Another pic
Look what I have been sent tonight from someone from the Biggin Hill Battle of Britain Supporters’ Club Website http://www.bhbobsc.org.uk/. Taken in 1950. More please 🙂
