From what I can make out the Lancaster is going to be heading on towards Chatsworth before turning for home. Even with the Derwent car park road closed off if you don’t have a ticket, there’s thousands of places you can park between Derwent and Chatsworth.
If I can skive off work I’m going up, failing that I’ll be hanging out the window at work and hoping she comes over Chesterfield on her way back, as she sometimes does.

It could be just me but the fuselage on the Lancastrian always looks different to a Lancaster (not just the pointy bits on the ends.. :p )
The first picture Eddie posted of “Star Watch”

I would bet is a Lancaster which is why he can’t find it on any list of BSAA Lancastrians. They’re not bulged bomb doors they’re standard Lancaster doors. Here are Lancastrian doors in this shot:

They are straight bottomed, not curved at all. I had a look on Airliners.net and found a couple of good shots that show this:

The other point is the tail. The streamlining starts well before where the tail turret starts…

Somebody tell me I’m not imagining things…. or have I been on the coffee tooo much this afternoon?

p.s. If someone knows how to make pictures work properly, knock yourselves out. Computers hate me.
She didn’t look like that after the crash, just after she was spares recovered and chopped up post war.
Up until the mid 1950’s She had all four Merlins, and a rear turret. Due to the crew setting fire to her post crash, the fuselage from the mid upper forward was burned, but the wings and tail were all intact.
The photo’s are very old now, at least 10 years. One of the fins has gone from the site and is in the Tirpitz museum in Norway. I wish I knew how they got it, it would make my life easier.

The late Peter Foote also recounted a tale of his invited attendance at one of the museums’s recoveries way back in the late 60’s early 70’s when he took some photos of the recovery and had his camera taken from him and the film removed and exposed!!!!
As for notebooks, one well known aviation buff (name escapes me…possibly a Mr Stroud? Chichester area?) had his notebook confiscated and offending pages torn out before it was returned when he left. I think this was mentioned in a letter to “the other” aviation monthly magazine. As for mobile phones, the museum’s website (guestpage) says that they will be CONFISCATED unless it can be proven they do not contain images of the museum. Not sure what the legal issues relating to theft might be in this instance, but doubtless the museum have taken good legal advice. So, all fairly draconian.
I would consider them attempting to relieve me of my property as theft. I don’t think I’d be in a co-operative mood.. much like when the yobs in some city centres want your mobile phone.

The pikeys are there without permission though. I doubt Andrewman and friends are just going to dump a jet in a car park without asking…

I remember hearing about this one. How intact is it now though?
wow, you have a real bee up the backside about the WIX forum.
Fact…. the world does not revolve around WIX nor is every keyboard enthusiast a member there.
Other forii are available.
To be fair there is a hell of a lot of info about the USA and pacific area on the WIX. While I appreciate the fact that a lot of people are loyal to “their” board, any information is useful.
It wasn’t just WIX he suggested searching on either.

Hehe! I don’t do underwater…. so its videofeeds, and other peoples pictures for me.
Looking at the National park service’s submerged resources section they seem to be documenting the B-29 fairly well and using it to educate people. Strange as it seems, if looting can be kept to a minimum, its almost as good as a museum.

If you truly believe this is impossible then I feel kind of sorry for you. Dare to dream – or risk being boring forever.
No I don’t think its impossible but what I know is the the facts which I have already stated
Glad to hear it… It must have been one cool dive.
Fair enough.
To put my point more concisely:
Nothing is impossible. It takes the right people to sign the right papers at the right time, all of which can be done. The sticking point is time and getting those people in place.

Wrong Sir the name of the thread is called “Lake Mead B-29 Recovery Discussion” if anyone in this thread I have the most knowledge of said airframe and its outcome hence there is no discussion on this airframe. As I stated in my last post BLM has made there case and while I certainly don’t agree with it I have to live with it because they own allot of land that has allot of different airframes on them including US Naval airframes and I rather not PO them since I want to maybe recover a few of these airframes.
As for other airframes in this thread the only other airframe that is a B-29 brought up was Doc by Peter who was stating he would like to see it it rebuild before another very wrecked 29 is recovered.
As for me policing the board please get a grip sir the only thing I’ve done is stated that there is no reason to have this discussion because of the FACTS.
As for Wixs correct but what both Dave and I were pointing out is that there is already at least one discussion on this on Wixs along with at least one on Flypast maybe you should try using the Search on Flypast then.
To make it simple end of discussion that airframe won’t be recovered not by me nor you or anyone else unless the President of the United States give his/hers permission. Now if that doesn’t sit with you then may I suggest you move to the States become an American Citz. and then complain to your elective officials till then lets move on to airframes that can/could be recovered. Surely you must have some in your Country correct.
Wow…
So the fact its been talked about before means we can’t talk about it again? End of discussion? I don’t think so… Not for a long time. If this were the case, your mission to get the US Navy to change its policy would have only been talked about once a few years ago.
Take a look and most of us on here know how to use the search facility. What usually happens is it hits off our curiosity, making us post again to find out if things have changed. The people who make rules don’t stay in office forever. I’m sure you will have found, as have I, that as different people come and go things that were thought to be impossible sometimes become easier.
If you truly believe this is impossible then I feel kind of sorry for you. Dare to dream – or risk being boring forever.
For a hypothetical recovery… I’m liking the idea of filling the tanks with something like foam.
As for touching the Lake Mead aircraft – I was under the impression that diving on it was prohibited, and you had to be some kind of mega qualified diver with special equipment…
