Given the choice, if I would rather have Barack Obama or the Queen head of state, I think I would prefer the Queen! I am sure so would most Americans!

Here’s my contribution taken at Sproat Lake in August, 2004. There was a very nice bar round the back of the lake and nearby managed to find a friendly boatman to take us out to them.

    Shame about the weather though!

Here are some interesting clips of Southend Airport from Pathe News.

Air Ferries showing Southend in the early 70’s including lots of Carvair activity and various shots inside the terminal

Boy Pilot shows Auster Autocrat G-AJEO in 1955. Includes the Auster taking off on the grass runway (15) towards Warners Bridge

First Civil Aircraft for Germany – shows the handover of Viking D-ADEL in 1955

German Trade Delegates Arrive – shows them arriving on a Trans Avia Viking in 1959

Good Stock goes East – shows cattle being loaded aboard Bristol Freighter G-ANVR in 1958 en route to Russia

Honeymooners Beat the Tax – shows them flying from Southend to Jersey in a Channel Airways Dakota G-AJIB in 1961

Hooneymoons Galore – shows them all boarding a Channel Airways Viscount en route to Jeresy in 1964.

I remember, as a tot, having to sit in hairdressers while my mother had her hair done. The stench was awful!

    Excellent thread.

I remember seeing either the first, or one of the first, 707’s to visit LAP in the late ’50’s. It was N709PA of PanAm, which I understand subsequently crashed due to lightning strike!

Anyway here is an intertesting clip showing a 707 doing a barrel role!

Although I think the hat was absolutely awful and tasteless, she did manage to get herself noticed as a result and everybody will remember it for years to come.

Not a bad result for such an insignificant royal!

Nice ones. I particularly liked the shot of the Heron.

I don’t know about anybody else but I hot a very poor reception this evening on Quest – the digital signal kept breaking up! Unfortunately it spoilt my enjoyment quite a bit!

Beech-nut chewing gum machines, where every fourth go was was free!

So you hung around and waited until the arrow was pointing to the “three” and, bingo, you got two packets for 1d.
