Very nice photos, I loved the Spitfire.
Is there an S11 Instructor in the Histroric Flight? Also is there a Royal Netherlands Navy Historic Flight?
😀 Oooh – and who is this female pilot? 😀
I believe it is Tracey Curtis-Taylor, who flies the Ryan.
Thank you for posting photos of a real aeroplane, i.e. one with lots of character!
Some nice ones there and very nostalgic!
My father worked on the Hornet Moth when it was owned by the Cardiff Aeroplane Club at Pengam Moors in 1954.
I use to fly the Auster, G-AIBR, when it was owned by the Brooklands Flying Club at Sywell in the mid-1960’s.
It is good to see they are both going strong!
There was also a damaged TF-1 Trader
VRC-20 Squadron:TF-1 Trader 136762/00

Thank you Dave, I had already found your website.
Extremely informative.
Any idea what the SNB-5’s were doing on board?
As an ex-Auster pilot, I will try to get to one of these.
Thank you for posting.
Unfortunately I didn’t photos of the two SNB-5’s that were on the deck. I had assumed that they were replacement aircraft for two of the three that were based at West Malling at that time. However I never did establish if that was the case!
Also, unfortunately, I didn’t get any photos of the 4 Skyraiders that were on board either! I seemed to have failed miserably!
Why don’t they go the whole hog and call themselves Derby Airways!!
BTB, Gooney Bird… the label on your E-1B pic says “Gunman Tracer”… it should read “Grumman Tracer”.
That was just a typo – too late in the day!
Anyway many thanks for the info – very informative.
Thank you chaps…..those certainly were the days!
…………and Argonauts as well. Who would put one of those down, nowadays, on a grass airfield – and more so, take off from the same (sans passengers, not surprisingly)!
I had forgotton about the Argonauts – it must have been a sight on a grass airfield, not to mention the sound of those Merlins!
Derby Airport – Burnaston – was not closed as a result of an Icelandic volcanic dust cloud but in consequence of a certain Japanese car manufacturer building its plant on it. Although having regard to its commercial standing resulting from the recent serial vehicle recalls, maybe soon the site will be vacated by it!
In that case bring back the Marathons and Dakotas – at least they didn’t need to be recalled!
If I may join in as well, here is one of the Thunderbirds taken at the Upper Heyford airshow around 1971.
I might pop over for old times sake.
I flew into Seething in an Auster, G-AJUE, on 20th March, 1966. I flew Ipswich-Swanton Morley-Seething-Ipswich. As I remember they were very friendly and welcoming.
The difference between Football and Rugby is….
Football is a Gentlemens’ game played by yobs.
Rugby is a yobs’ game played by Gentlemen.
That should wind a few people up!
