Depending on which runway is in use, where are the best places to get some flying shots these days?
Hot off the txt; now testing Sunday subject to w/x [which, the BBC say, doesn’t sound good! 😡 ] Will be chatting Saturday, so will post if I know more.
G’day 😉
In that case I will get my bucket and spade out on standby in readiness for a day out in Southend!
Back in approx 1996 there was an airshow at Lydd airport, by chance can any one remember the registration number of the British World Airlines Viscount which was doing pleasure flights from the airport over that weekend? In addition I don’t suppose anyone would have any photos of that event? I seem to recollect that it was a 1950’s theme and I remember a DH Heron attending and a Bristol 170F ? Many Thanks!
The Viscount was G-APEY. I was there and went on a pleasure flight aboard the aircraft. I also took some camcorder footage from both inside and outside the Viscount together with some flying shots of the Freighter. I must have some photographs somewhere but can’t lay my hands on them at the moment.
Due to a number of factors it has been necessary to pull # 2 engine once again and remove it from the wing for further work. Fortunately this work can be undertaken at Southend by one of the team’s many project supporters, and again we are indebted for their generosity.
At this point in time it is not anticipated she will get airborne before next weekend.

Any further news as to when she is likely to be airborne?
Was the Tiger Moth G-ANKG? Below are a couple of photos. Not sure where I got them from, although the notes on the back say “DH82 Ipswich 58 after overhaul, crashed 59”. The other says “Crashed Ipswich Airport 59 – Stalled on turn on overshoot at 100ft”. Interesting other sources give the accident date as 11/9/58!

I don’t know which Tiger Moth it was but whoever pranged it was never forgiven by members of the East Anglian Flying Club as it was never replaced. When I joined the club in 1964 I never heard the end of it and we had to make do with just Austers!!
Having said that, this one did seem to be the likely candidate – many thanks for posting.
Irony is I used to live near Cambridge, now nearer to Monewdon where ex Ipswich a/c live…… 🙂
Which of the Ipswich a/c are based near you?
Ah, sorry about that, wife rang to update me and commented on the lack of IT eqpt. in the office! (and quoted current food and hygiene regs!) Look forward to watching it this w/e. I remember being on approach to Cambridge in a pa 28 and being overtaken by Suckling -those were the days!
My solo cross country was Ipswich-Cambidge-Luton-Ipswich in a non-radio Auster G-AIZY.
For some reason I had to land on the grass to the right of the main runway and take-off on the grass to the left of the main runway! To this day I couldn’t understand why I was not allowed to use the main runway. It still cost me 18 shillings!
Tonight, Thursday their is a repeat of a 40 minutes about Suckling Airways, know no more BBC3 or 4 may be 21:00 hrs (or earlier) not near tv or that sort of info. May have Ipswich Airport info???
Thanks airgage, it was an excellent documentary.
Unfortunately Ipswich didn’t feature but there was plenty of Cambridge!
I remember flying on an F100 from Stansted to Milan in the mid 1990’s. However I am not sure whether we would have gone into Linate or Malpensa. Would anybody be able to confirm which airport Air UK used on their Milan service?
Hi Gooney Bird
Can you tell me anything about the larger hanger in the aerial shot, was it taken down or burnt down? and what year did it go.
Many thanks,
Kevboy. 🙂
Hi Kevboy,
I last flew from Ipswich in 1969 and everthing was intact at that time. I have never known the larger hangar to contain aircraft, it seemed to be used as a commercial warehouse. I know that G-AGXP was subsequently destroyed in a hangar fire which I assume would have been the smaller one.
The only other hangar that was used was at the end of runway 14 and was used by a company operating Kolibrie helicopters in the early ’60’s.
That’s about the limit of my knowledge I’m afraid.
Your first flight is an experience that you will never forget and to have it in an historic aeroplane from an historic airfield is a bonus!
That’s very sad news. His airshow commentaries were always very enjoyable.
Ah yes, but beauty is only skin deep!
My favourires were the B170 Superfreighter and the Tiger Moth.
However, fitting the doors on the former were a pig of a job as were the struts on the latter especially as you tended to get plastic cement all over your fingers!
Anyone know if Channel Coachways still exist? I remember in late 80’s when I used to go to Cecil Jones, they supplied to contract bus every morning and evening.
Yes according to their website they are now based in London.
However it states that they have been in existance for 60 years which is incorrect as they were started by some drivers that worked for Channel Airways and they took on the Channel fleet of coaches soon after their demise in 1972!
