This one was taken at Southend with Yankee Yankee turning around ready to take-off from runway 06……….
Viking G-APOP was ex-Kings Flight machine VL246 when its flying days were over the wings were scrapped with the fisealarge being offored to the Southend musum, BKS has a spare set of wings sadly trhe museum could not take them on due to restricted space both were then scrapped.
Yes it was rather sad that at least one of the King’s flight could not have been preserved!
I thought i had a pic of it somewhere on my PC, Dont know where this is either !
Nice shot – I don’t know where it is either.
The main destination was Ostend, although it did the occasional Spanish night flight when there wasn’t a Viscount available!
Head south from Newcastle!
Norwich?
Further north than Norwich.
Jamie-Southend – indeed the airfield was very sparse!
No, head north from there!
Here are some Tradair examples, G-AJFR, G-APOO and G-APOP all taken in early 1962. Sorry for the poor quality!
How embarrassing for the Captain – he will never live it down!
The problem will be getting it back out after i imagine. Dont think Ballykelly is big enough for a B738 takeoff even empty!
This happened to a comet coming into Belfast Aldergrove about 12-15 years ago. It landed by mistake at Nuts Corner / Langford Lodge as the runway is also 25/07 like EGAA. Comet had seat taken out to get light enough to take off to get to EGAA.
Not to mention the Air India Super Connie that landed at Northolt instead of Heathrow in the late 50’s/early 60’s!
Good ones – especially the Channel Viscounts. That must have been taken just after they went bust!
Great photo’s. You may not be surprised to hear that the Hermes particularly caught my attention. Do you know when this picture was taken? I believe that this aircraft was scrapped at this location. I had a friend and colleague who worked for Channel at the time.
S.B.
I think it was taken in the Summer of 1966. It use to come in for checks by Channel and was always put in the Tradair hangar. I myself was working there at the time doing a holiday job, and one of my tasks was to clean the underside of the aircraft using petrol extracted from the aircraft itself and a swab! Believe it or not, it was absolute bliss!
Here she is when you flew in her at Greenham Common.
G-AGJV was sold in November the following year to Air Freight, then Skyways Cargo Airline. in February 1980 it was sold to Air BVI as VP-LVM and went out to the British Virgin Islands. I believe she is derelict out there somewhere, but have heard no more.
I was on board her that weekend as well!
What a weekend – a flight in a Dak and an ogle at the KC97 in the static park!
….and memories of my last flight in a Viscount at the Lydd Air Show a few years ago!!
Dragon Rapide (G-AKUC) of Cambrian Airways from Cardiff Pengam Moors to Weston Super Mare. I was 8 years old and scared stiff!
CM – Sorry I can’t be any more precise but I guess it was around 1964/65.
