I had forgotten that they were RB66’s. I remember that they were called the Hornets and the motto on the T-shirts that they were flogging at the airshows were of a Hornet flying along holding a camera – very cute and colourful!

By the way, my apologies for deviating from the topic of this thread!

All I can remember at Alconbury in the 1960’s were B66 Destroyers.

A Viking with an identity crisis at Luton c.1963/4. being used as a garage for motorcycle and sidecar !!

It’s odd that the reistration under the wing is G-AHPB whereas on the fin it is G-AJBT. I guess that ‘BT has been fitted with ‘PB’s wings but the aircraft looks derelict!

The F-101As and Cs were based at RAF Bentwaters with the 81st TFW. The RF-101As and Cs were based at Upper Heyford with the 66th TRW which came over from Laon, France as part of a unit shuffle when De Gaulle kicked the nuke based units out of France. The RF-101s were capable of carrying a ‘special weapon’ and the pilots practiced various delivery techniques.

Weren’t they also based at Woodbridge?

I also remember seeing around 12 C54’s at Upper Heyford around the time they were there. Not sure what they were used for!

As an aside, I was amused by the Izair A320.

With “WWW” on the front and dropping on the the Z’s, it sounds similar to Wizzair!

I did like the old Britannia Airways colour scheme, very smart. I flew to Palma on G-AVRL in June, 1971, my first flight in a pure jet!

Good bit of vintage film there. I wish thjat there was more of that era in colour of that quality.

I particularly liked the Andover, and the Vulcan of course!

    Thank you for sharing.

Very good pics. I see you have broken with tradition as Aer Arran is normally the first! I still can’t make up my mind as to which colour scheme I prefer! I think I still prefer the original one!

First class photos there teddymax, some really interesting items. I couldn’t match the quality of photos, however I attach photo of C-74 Globemaster 1. When I first saw this aircraft at Heathrow in 1963 I didn’t know what it was, was it a DC-7 on steroids ! They only lasted a very short time in civil service.

The C74 visited Southend in the early sixties but then it was found to be too heavy for the runway and wasn’t allowed to visit again! Unfortunately it arrived and left in the middle of the night so I missed it!

That could turn out to be a very profitable route as I assume it will avoid the high APD that you would normally pay flying to the States! Also clearing US customs in Dublin would be an added bonus! That’s good news all round!
