I was amused to read that some of the people taking part in the test were local gym members!

Perhaps they should have some people from an old folks home in order to get more of a balance!

The illustrious flying days of RAF Coltishall a rapidly drawing to a close.

April 1st will see 6Sqd fly off to RAF Conningsby and 41(F) numberplate handed over to FJWOEU.

As with the Shar, the Jaguar (in my view) should not be being drawn down early. 😑

Living in ‘rural’ Norfolk, is getting a bit lonely now, as post 1st April there will only be one Operational RAF flying base left in the county (RAF Marham).

There used to be over 30 RAF bases in Norfolk (Mostly during WWII) as well as many USAAF bases.

Most military activity in South Norfolk these days are the F-15’s from Lakenheath (long may they continue).

So apart from chewing the odd piece of straw and chatting to Tony Martin there isn’t much to do!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ˜€

I recently heard that RAF Lakenheath is due to close. Any idea whether that is fact or fiction?

    Hello Gooney Bird

Thanks for posting the picture, any idea what year this would have been?

I know who you are now! πŸ™‚

    Hiya Joe,

    Blast my covers blown!

All I know is that it was taken between late 1964 and early 1966. I will try and dig out the negatives and see if I can tie the date down more.

I’m a traditionalist and I think airports should be named after their location and not individuals.

However at the end of the day, you can call it whatever you like, but it will still be regarded as Belfast City.

How many people refer to Liverpool’s airport as John Lennon Airport? Most people just call it Liverpool Airport and always will!

I took this photo of Ipswich Airport from one of the Austers that I was flying. The Auster’s shadow can just be seen in the bottom left of the photo.

On the ground you can see a Jodel, Auster and Tiger Moth near the hangar and a Heron (not sure whose!) near the signals area.

Great shots – what part of the airfield is the ground picture taken?

The 06 shot has a barn like building on the left, which i don`t remember at all, i remember the cottages there that were pulled down, but all this maybe before my time, as all i remember Channel Airways wise are Viscounts, 1-11s etc when i was 5 or there abouts, living the otherside of the railway line from Laddie Marmols!

The ground shot of the Viking was taken outside the Channel hangar. If you leave the hangar heading out, the road suddenly bends and it is on actual bend that aircraft were parked, usually Vikings and the DC4. Therefore if you are driving towards the Channel hangar as you start to approach it you had to make sure you did a sharp right or else you would hit the aircraft!

The original Channel hangar was the one near the terminal building that eventually became the freight shed. They only had half the hangar which was totally cordoned off. I am not sure what was in the other half.

    Hi Gooney Bird

I would be very interested to see the picture of G-AMTA. She made a full recovery and is currently based at Tollerton.

As requested a photo of G-AMTA immediately following the incident. It was owned by Bertie Quinton who was flying it at the time.

For some reason as it was landing on runway 26 it veered off the runway and the pilot must have applied full power, but unfortunately by now it was over a ploughed field at right angles to the runway and gathering dirt in its spats. It appeared to be bouncing along the field but each time it hit the ground it lost flying speed as the mud was acting as a break. In the end the pilot cut the throttle and it went straight over on its back. I have some other photos of the incident, one of which shows Danny Burgess the airport manager digging the engine out of the dirt whilst the pilot and his passenger looked on. I will try and find it.

Cestrian – I liked the one of ‘HZ. I am sure it used to have green markings rather than red in my day.

Here is my contribution to this thread.

I have included a Channel Viscount on lease to British Eagle standing outside the Channel Hangar at Southend….the engineering crew on the left are just returning from their tea break!

I have also included a Bahamas Airways Viscount parked outside the Tradair hangar, also at Southend. This aircraft was also leased from Channel and eventually returned to their livery. Note the Hermes nose on the left.

Therefore for completeness I have included a full photo of the Hermes. All major checks for this aircraft were carried out by Channel. Note the Viscount fin on the right!

It I am right, only 10 were built and 3 of them were used by Airnautic.

It’s good that at least one has been preserved.

1977-1996 in Ipswich, I attended most of the airshows and recall seeing the DC3 in black livery when they were making the film with Michael Caine. the Queen also arrived at Ips. Airport for the 25th Jubilee Celebrations, I think in an Andover.

I last met the CFI Stanley Ward about 18 months ago.

There were several casualties from the ‘hurricane’ of ’87 where light aircraft were tipped over

I learnt to fly during 1964/65 at Ipswich. Stan Ward was the CFI initially and then he went off to do other things and Wing Commander Pickford took over. It was he who eventually certified my log book. I understand some time later than Stan returned as the CFI again.

In fact he formed the “Flying Sparrows” aerobatic team!

    John,

It would be nice if you could dig them out. Out of interest, what years did your 19 years span? I will see what else I can dig out – I have a photo of Auster G-AMTA lying on its back immediately following an incident where it had got mud caught up in its spats and was unable to take-off!

Thanks for the pictures. As a product of Ipswich myself interested to know the history behind these Austers – or any other aviation stories from the late, lamented Ipswich airport for that matter. Was this some sort of air taxi operation?

No, they just belonged to the local East Anglian Flying Club which was owned by Southend-based Channel Airways. The club did own a Tiger Moth at one stage but that was written off in the early 1960’s.

The original club Austers were G-AGXP and G-ANHZ, but these were later joined by G-AIZY and G-AJUE which were purchased from Souhend Municipal Flying Club inb 1964. The club also later on did operate a couple of Saia Marchetti aircraft
