I went from Scotland down to Lakenheath many moons ago to see a bunch of 105s come over for a deployment. Fantastic.
That must have been a sight worth seeing.
I remember seeing the first Phantoms to visit the UK which was at Bentwaters in the early 1960’s. There was both a USAF and a USN example – they were such an usual shape at the time which made them fascinating to watch. Mind you that was well before they became two a penny
I have a soft spot for the Tipsy Trainer because when I was a kid my father used to regularly inspect the one owned by the Cardiff Ultra Light Flying Club (G-AFJS). We lived at Rhoose and every Friday he would travel to Cardiff Pengam Moors on the train with myself and my mother in order to inspect the Tipsy and also a Hornet Moth (G-ADMT). He got paid 10 shillings which just covered the cost of the train fare for the three of us and a bar of chocolate on the way home! He didn’t want to charge any more because they ere all so friendly and obviously couldn’t afford the going rate at that time!
I remember being offered a flight in the Tipsy but for some reason I turned it down (I was only 8 at the time!). I have always regretted not taking that flight!
Excellent site – well done
Yes, it is the northern side of Heathrow, just to the right of the tunnels. All transatlantic flights departed from the North and the rest all went from the centre (where the current terminals 1, 2 and 3 are).
Normally on a day out at Heathrow you would get the bus to the North side and then walk through the foot tunnel to the Queens Building.
Could this be they?
I seem to remember we went to both Bent-waters and Wethersfield on the same day 1960 or 1961. Not 100% memory recall on this.
Low grade I’m afraid.

They certainly look very familiar – thanks for that.
Yes it looks as though the new logo has been added to an existing colour scheme!
I remember seeing them when they were based at Duxford, West Malling and Waterbeach.
They were always one of my favourites!
Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of either seeing or hearing an F105 in the flesh. However in its day I considered it to be the nicest looking of all its contempories, even the Phantom!

I remember them as well. noisy things
I was thinking slightly before then when the 20th TFW were based at Wethersfield with F100’s! The rumour at the time was that they were to be replaced with F105’s which unfortunately never happened.

Nobody has mentioned the main benefit of being old(ish).
That is that you would have lived through the golden age of aviation, i.e, the 50’s and 60’s!! Need I say more?

G-ADXS was displayed at Stories Garage Victoria Avenue or London Road and later went to the museum
A another flea was displayed at the Palace Theatre this one was the Flea that flew accross the English Channel…scary
If I remember rightly the flea was stored at the back of Stories Garage which was located in Alexandra steet, opposite but slightly further up from what was the old Rivoli cinema.
It was a shame that old Ladi Marmol didn’t still have his EP9 around that time (G-AOFU) – that would have been worth watching!
