I went to the Paris Air Show on “Big Bill” in June, 1973, via Le Touquet. Came back on “Fat Albert” alias G-AXAI.
……and the first flight out is the “Golden Viscount” service to Jersey!
I can remember an artist’s impression inside the front cover of a Tom Hills Holidays brochure, of a Comet in the full ‘gold fin’ Channel livery. My parents booked the holiday to Palma from Stansted. However, we actually flew on a Transeuropa Caravelle. Perhaps Channel folded after the brochures had been printed.
Flight in a Caravelle? Not a bad result. Always wanted a flight in one of those but never got round to it!
VeeOne/Peter et al….The Channel ‘gold fin’ scheme was ‘lifted’ from Continental airlines in the USA ,wasn’t it, when Channel bought some of their Viscounts….the Tridents must have been painted with that scheme from the factory…… when did they go bust…1971?….Mick
It is true that the “gold fin” was lifted from the Continental Viscounts, but that was well before they bought them. The previous 700 series, purchased from BEA together with their original ex. Tradair Viscount G-APZC, were all painted in the gold scheme.
Lovely bit of film. I remember the LTU Vikings!
Thank you for posting.
How about “Freddie Laker Airport” or “Jack Jones Airport”, which is much more appropriate”
Personally I am a gerat believer in keeping the original name, i.e Southend (Rochford) Airport!
I believe it was originally purchased by Tradair and then inherited by Channel when they took Tradair over!
I would be on the first flight!
Even in the mid-sixties, Channel had a daily 83 seater Viscount service to both Jersey and Guernsey, 7 days a week, in the summer months both leaving around 11:30.
My first encounter with any sort of aeroplane was a Tiger Moth at Desford, near Leicester. I sat in the front seat while it was taxied from one part of the airfield to the other. I must have been about 6 at the time!

Dragon Rapide, G-AKUC, of Cambrian Airways from Pengam Moors to Weston-Super-Mare on 23rd March, 1954!
Next flight was a Cambrian Dakota, G-AMSW, from Rhoose to Jersey on 11th June, 1954.

I recently flew in a Grunman Goose on Vancouver Island from Port Hardy to Port McNeil. It is amazing that Pacific Coastal Airlines still operate 4 of these aircraft dating back to the early 1940’s!
The one I flew in, shown moored up at Port McNeil, was of 1944 vintage.
With a criminal record, she wouldn’t get a job at the end of it anyway!
I bet her dad is really proud of her!!
