He is refering to the F-22s passive missile launch detectors MLDs that formed the basis of the F-35s DAS. A 360 degree IRST of sorts with limitations.
If im not mistaken its the equivalent of the Eurofighters PIMAWS system – which if im not mistaken has not been integrated?
Typhoon has an active MAWS based on mm-wave radars.

I’ve been looking at the back end of the F-22 (before this) and in some of the larger images I noticed a suspicious feature that shows up particularly well in the picture you posted. Any idea what these are?

According to this article (which deals with american nuclear bombs in Germany), the Typhoon, in Germany, may succeed the Tornado by 2010.
I doubt it, the Typhoon will just replace the Tornado IDS in the conventional fighter bomber role. The nuclear role will be given up.
Or even a dozen Rafale at once…

I have the strong feeling you guys are misinterpreting what has been reported. Of course it is theoretically possible that one device could do all the work (IRST, imaging, MAW), but why there are 3 different systems if one can do all the work. It makes no sense to have a dedicated MAWS in form of the SOAR if OLS-K/UEM would be able to do this and it makes no sense that OLS-K is used against air targets when it’s not able to cover the top hemisphere by the fact that it is located under the right engine nacelle and on the other way round it makes no sense to use OLS-UEM for AG stuff when the OLS-K is much better suited for the same reasons. There are 3 systems for 3 different purposes SOAR = MAW, OLS-UEM = AA IRST/Imaging, OLS-K = AG targeting/imaging. That’s what it is all about.

And where the hell is it written that OLS can detect missiles? Oh no where what a pitty. Honestly I give a sh!t on what you interprete in the or that news release/article. So tell me why there is the SOAR if the OLS is already capable of missile wanring?

It can but it doesn’t make any sense if it has an integrated system.
It is linked to the RHAWS system and is used to detect weapons launched at the aircraft. It is fully integrated into the fire control system.
Show me a single source which suggests that the OLS-K & UEM are used as MAWS!

Most manufacturers claim to be the first or that their product offers unique capabilities, often you can find those on other products/platforms as well. So far nothing has been released about the OLS-UEM which is special at all.
There is exclusive use agreement for military signal Glosnos. So accuracy might be better than what is offered with others.

it does matter. they may not want to reveal true ranges as it got confused in one hand 15km(ranging) and on another 45 km for nonafterburning detecting. and in another sentence two to three times better than before and in another sentence no such thing in the world.
Still nothing special and no it doesn’t matter if it is from NIIPP or not, that doesn’t say anything about the system. Of course real figures might be better, but the same applies to any of those systems.
It is more about flexibility in using GPS guided weopons. There is no such agreement with Galileo for military use. and Also Russian production methods are mostly simliar so MKI assembly line can be used for MIG-35.
So the Indians will just use GPS not Galileo where is the problem? They already use it on the Su-30MKI for example. So using GPS guided munitions is not big deal at all!
Currently the following AG weapons are integrated into Block 5 Typhoons plus austere package.
– 1000 lb free fall bomb
– GBU-10 Paveway II 2000 lb LGB
– GBU-16 Paveway II 1000 lb LGB
– UK Paveway II 1000 lb LGB
– Enhanced Paveway II 1000 lb dualmode bomb
There is currently NO Paveway III integrated! Future weapons planned include EGBU-16 and EPW IV, later maybe GBU-24 PW III and EPW III.
The article says it has dropped PW II and III – does that mean 1000 and 2000 pounders? Does anyone have pics of the 2000 pounders being carried? I remember a debate as to whether these could be carried on the underwing pylons closest to the wing roots (ie in front of the undercarraige). Has this ever been shown? Is it only possible with Tranche 2?
When do the RAF get their first T2 a/c? When do the Saudi deliveries kick in? What are the next squadrons to get Typhoon after No. 6?

2. GBU-10 was carried on stations 3 & 11, but I haven’t seen any pics with 2000 lb bombs attached to the inner hardpoints

6. No sqn beyond No.6 has been announced to be the next RAF unit, so we have to wait and see.
Thanks uss novice, at least one who got the point. OLS-K is located under the airlift intake and as far as I know it is used for AG missions only. The OLS-UEM is the AA device and it’s capabilities don’t look any special in comparison to systems like PIRATE or OSF. BTW the 50 km/90 km figures are not for the OLS-UEM, but the Su-35s OLS-35. Range figures for the OLS-UEM were given with 15/45 km against a non-afterburning target. But feel free to correct if you have any other serious sources which suggest something different.

OSF/Pirate has been indevelopment for over a decade so most likey they are not comparable to what space institute has to offer. It is much newer. otherwise they would not have highlighted prominently.
Honestly it doesn’t matter if NIIPP is is a space institute, that alone proves nothing. OSF and PIRATE just entered service in 2004 and 2007 new?improved versions are already under development and the data/information available in the public for the OLS-UEM neither sound special nor superior to what systems like the OSF or PIRATE has to offer. I would just agree that the OLS-K is somewhat unique within the competition, but it is only relevant for AG missions and basically dead weight and drag in the AA role.

There will be enhanced military signal for few countries who have signed for it. and I doubt that speciallity is available with Galileo/navistar.
A lot of countries received GPS guided munitions, I don’t see a reason why India shouldn’t be allowed to use such type of weapons.

No requirement no funding. ASMs are just offered to customers as options.
