Lake attributes the not overly convincing performance of the DASS to mission data in the first place. ESM, ECM/TRD and MAWS are all dependent on programmable mission data and these are property of the respective customers. Lake states that the British are clearly ahead of the other partners here, whether that’s true or not is hard to say, but the British are definitely very active in that field and have the longest experience with the system, so they actually had a head start over everyone else. Mission data may have played a role during the Swiss evaluation, but maturity of certain sub systems (CFD, TRD and ECM in particular but also MAWS) was another issue at that time. How much more capable DASS is nowadays is difficult to say, but much has happened since, less so on the hardware front, but on the software side. DASS is a credible system and it is evolving. Albeit sub standard hardware on German examples is an unsubstantiated claim as far as the components available are concerned. I doubt that the LWR was of great importance to the Swiss AF, the Gripen lacked both MAWS and LWR, but its EWS was still rated highly, albeit for the 2015 configuration such system may have been taken into account.

RAM absorbs the wavelengths it is designed to absorb. What bands these are depends on the RAM composition and no one is going to publicly state which wavelengths these are. X-band is for sure the one being covered as it is the most widely proliferated one for fire control radars.

Australia is the only one (USN I think is a pointless entry in this thread, since it was about export from the start), and it has what, 24? Russia will have more before the end of this year. I don’t know what basis you have for saying they are more advanced when it comes to operational readiness. The Su-34 introduction process has been a long and steady experience.
Do you actually know what you are talking about? If you are talking about exports the Su-34 has none and Russia isn’t an export customer! And the RAAF ordered 24 SH around 2007, has taken delivery of the first ac in 2010 and deliveries are already completed and the type is combat ready in RAAF service if I’m not mistaken. Dunno when Russia placed the first order for Su-34s, but the first was actually delivered on 15th December 2006. We have 2012 and there are still just 10 in service with no front line unit being operational at this point in time.
How? Russia has far more orders on the Su-34 than any export SH operator.

And any SH operator has more ac in service than the RuAF has Su-34s in service and is more advanced when it comes to operational readiness. And your 114 Su-34 on order compare to 570 SH on order. To cut it short an entirely moot comparison, next to the fact that both aircraft are very different in design and requirements in the first place.

Well such claims are useless without any reference. And no you didn’t state “best resolution” but “best AG mapping capability” which ultimately boils down to resolution and range. Without any hard numbers such claims must be taken with a pinch of salt. And radars are being upgraded for many aircraft especially on the software front, but also when it comes to hardware.
But yes, it is has twice as large Array(vs SH), and lots of output power to go with it.
There is no doubt about the aperture, but transmission power isn’t linked to the size and effective radiated power and antenna gain are also important factors as is the receiver sensitivity and processing capabilities. So once again these claims are speculative.

Sorry but you are mistaken here when it comes to the scope of OC training and pilots running through transition courses for example might well be older, experienced as jocks, but not necessarily on the type. Such a training is designed to teach pilots not only how to fly the aircraft, but also how to employ it in combat. Sure the more comprehensive and advanced tactical training follows in the frontline squadron, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t training how to fight in the first place. Operational conversion training includes an “operational” for a reason. I don’t think the AdA has a completely different physolophie in training its pilots. From what I know about the conversion courses run at Laage it includes a number of air combat sorties with increasing complexity and difficulty. From basic fighter manoeuvres to 2-ship battles in a scenario with enemy strikers and fighters. On top of that thete are reasons for FL limitations and rules in general. As said such exercises aren’t conducted to measure which aircraft is the better one, but to train pilots, learn from their errors and improve their skills. I want to point out that this is a post NOT related to the exercise at Solenzara as such.

I don’t say otherwise but as you said yourself it is “basic” certainly not enough to be deployed in an international exercise against the rafale. That would be foolish, dangerous and a loss of time and money to train rookies. You would hardly mobilize foreign assets like the rafale with the typhoon just to train rookies.
It was a bi-lateral DACT exercise, not a large international exercise with complex scenarios and COMAOs. Hardly something beyond the scope of TX- or B-courses.
I don’t say otherwise but I was merely answering bloodshot assertion that the typhoon pilots would be automatically less experienced. Especially when the rafale pilots have to train for a much wider variety of tasks.
Back then the range of missions wasn’t that comprehensive and while focusay not have been on AA, AA is certainly a field the unit trains for and places a greater priority on it than previous dedicated strike/attack squadrons. That’s the direct result from the swingrole/omnirole capability however you want to call it.
A young pilot completing its transformational phase would have at best around 100H (and I am generous) of flight on a rafale or a typhoon before being sent to its operational squadron to learn its job. The purpose of a transformational squadron (at least for ab initio pilots) is to learn how to fligh your aircraft not to learn all the operational tactics. That’s the job of frontline squadron to train the young rafale and typhoon pilot to become operationally proficient. As a consequence the idea of sending young pilots with a few dozen hours on the type in an international exercise let alone for a demanding dogfight is simply foolish and stupid.
Also just think a minute: why would British headquarters send “inexperienced” typhoon pilots to confront the rafale ? And what make you think that rafale pilots would be more experience knowing they have to train for CAS, Deep strike and recce while typhoon pilots almost exclusively train in AtA duty ? (Especially at that time).
Besides many rafale pilots present in corsica are ex Jaguar, mirage F1 or Mirage 2000D pilots with very limited AtA experience while most typhoon pilots present in Corsica would come from Tornado F3. Those who deployed in A-stan could not even train in AtA… (As Kovy explained the “Provence” squadron was at that time both a transformational squadron and and operational squadron.)
So the excuse of different experience does not stand especially when the British pilots on the picture are clearly in their 30’s and when I say 30’s I mean more 35 years old. I have the original picture and it is pretty obvious. Also note that A&C clearly wrote that both rafale and typhoon are “far from beginners”.
I have to disagree on some points here:
1.) Transformation training includes basic combat training as well, including BFM, ACM etc.
2.) It’s not necessarily the norm, but it happens that pilot in conversion courses are send on a deployment and complete some of their flights there.
3.) Some Typhoon jocks come from Harriers and Jags as well and the Tornado F3 is not exactly known for being a tremendous dogfighter. There are worlds between the Tornado and the Typhoon and the pilots have to adapt their tactics and skills to the performance level and capabilities of their mount.
That being said, I don’t know about the skills/experience of the pilots involved in the DACT exercise at Solenzara and I’m certain no one here knows it. That the results can be the other way round has been demonstrated as well. At the end of the day there are a lot of factors affecting the outcome of such battles. The French did a good job their and the Rafale is unquestionably a credible fighter to be reckoned.
Given the wealth of exercises all around the world Typhoons have been participating and the feedback obtained from some of them (by far not all have been commented on) the Typhoon appears to offer a serious edge in comparison to most fighters currently employed. Of course there are limitations and we rarely know about the detailed circumstances, ROE, restrictions imposed, roles etc. If Rafale is allegedly so dominant as the results from the two DACTs want to make you believe, why haven’t we heard more about similar results where you guys are so keen to highlight the claimed superiority of the Rafale? I think what many may actually confuse is dominance/superiority with invulnerability. I don’t think anyone made such a claim. From what’s being known the overall simulated kill ratio of Typhoons against other fighters is in an overwhelming favor for the Typhoon. Of course there are a few other types which are certainly very demanding and where Typhoon might not be able to dominate in the same way as against some other types. Rafale is certainly one of them.
And who says that the AMRAAMs were simulated with full capability, that even ECM was allowed to be used or that the Typhoons were supercruising in this mission at all? At the end of the day we don’t really know what happened here or there in most cases. And if the story from the Italian side is true, it just demonstrates that the same could happen the other way round and that possibly without Rafales being restricted like at Al Dhafra. Every type can be defeated and it wouldn’t be the first, nor the last time that a supposedly inferior type smashs superior types, by smart tactics. Reminds me of an AF tale were a German Tornado at scored two kills against F-15Cs by hiding close to the ground, popping up a shoot them down with winders in a surprise attack. Or the good old Rhinos giving Vipers and Eagles a bad day. Things like these happen, if it is the norm then we can conclude that there is really a likely superiority of one type over another.
Not all of the operators of T1 jets are fully on board the drops, for example, and not everyone uses the same MD. DASS is the same basic hardware (Germany’s slightly austere version notwithstanding) but has completely different capabilities on different nations’ jets.
What “austere version” are you talking about? The sole hardware differences on German Typhoons is a different TRD and LWR is missing, as is the case for Italian and Spanish Typhoons. Austrian Typhoons lack DASS altogether.

Even if true, it paints a good picture of Typhoon capabilities. I mean the Rafales were simulating a third generation threat and owned the Typhoon at will. So we must conclude that Typhoon pilots need to absolute Top Guns to beat a 3rd generation enemy. I would buy that.
Get your facts right, the only limitation the French had was the simulation of AA-10C missiles, which is a quite long ranging one and which is difficult to simulate as the RBE2 lacks a CW illuminator. So the pilots were possibly not even aware of the simulated missile threats woth no illumination or actual missiles in the air.
