    FSB is ordering 5 Mi-35, for delivery by the end of 2017. Deal is worth 2.83 billion rubles.

    Do you think the contract part of/an extension of this other or a different one?

    Weird. Solid engine but given the timeline of the MTA, you would think a PD-14 derivative would be desired.

    Maybe it is due to production capabilities. PD-14 is also expected for Il-76.

    There seems to be another aircraft in the background, as that An-22 has 3 vertical tails!

    By looking at the number plate, it is likely that this is the actual aircraft:. It was put on storage in 1994 thus the photo must have been taken between 1992-94.

    I wonder if the Tu-22M3 could be used. It lacks range but the refuelling probe can be installed. It is available in numbers and it would certainly be cheaper than building all those Blackjacks.

    What about activating Tu-95? Are there any stored in good condition?

    Tu-160 at KAPO, at the rear of the hangar there seems to be an incomplete? frame. Or maybe it’s an existing one in a different stage of refurbishment.

    Maybe, but then it is not worthy to reopen production line for a small number. Maybe PAK-DA gets cancelled/delayed and Tu-160 will soldier for several more decades than expected?

    The cash saved from the scrapping of the original MMRCA will not only be spent on LCA, but is likely to contribute to the US$5.5bn ‘R&D’ contract with Sukhoi for the FGFA. Rumour has it SAAB will provide consultancy for LCA mk2 (I can see this being extended for the AMCA), with probably Gripen NG being the fall back option for the mk.2.

    If the plan is to buy 200 LCA I don’t see how much is left for other purposes you name. One of the original objetives of the MRCA was to access technology. Now that it has been cancelled, is it not needed any more? How are they going to replace it?

    Vedemosti reports that Egypt recently agreed to buy 46 MiG-29s!

    I thought it would not happen after Egypt acquired Rafale, but Middle East royal families have been pumping money into Egypt to prevent Iranian influence.

    Great contract for RSK MiG, it will keep production line open past 2020.

    Why are there stars under the canopy? Do they represent bombing missions from the Georgian campaign? That is where western fighters mark their “kills”.

    Most likely missile launches during trials.

    These are uncompetitive products from start and cant be upgraded.
    Y-20 starts with 1960s engines with overweight wider draggier C-17 kind platform. it can never be operationally effective.
    C919 is built with aluminium that is permanently delayed and built at expensive city like Shanghai.
    the point is none of Chinese aviation products are export competitive to make it lower price for domestic market.

    Back in the 80s they were producing MiG-21 derivatives, no airliners, and export market was 0. China has the resources and will to develop modern aircraft and they will get there.

    But the 9.13 carries the Gardeniya ECM. I don’t remember where I read it, but supposedly it was next to useless (maybe due to interfering with on-board systems)?

    I have never read that the Gardeniya was useless. When Russians pulled out of Moldova they removed these jammers from MiG-29 left there. If they were useless I don’t see the point.

    The ECM kit which fits your description is the one installed in Tu-160, apparently it had many teething issues.

    All series SMTs are de facto SMT-II (with FGM-129/N041R Zhuk-M2E radar), the original SMT-I was offered with N019MP Topaz Cassegrain-type radar.

    All series SMT are based on 9.18 models. Original SMT-I/II were 9.17 versions. Avionics in 9.17 were modernised by Russkaya Avionika, while RPBK did the 9.18.
