    Hey Arthur
It’s good to see that someone gave this scenario a bit of thought.
I’m not worried, I also think that the chances of it happening are extremely remote.
I was mulling it over in my head while sipping a vodka and listening to all the vuvuzelas and thought I’d see what other people thought.
I do admit that while watching the opening it occured to me that if a nutter did crash his private plane into the stadium I’d have some very stern people in suits knocking at my door in the morning.

You’re right, no terrorist organisation would risk the backlash of popular outrage if they attacked the World Cup.
    But what about some nutter?
In February a middle aged white guy committed suicide by flying his private plane into a government biulding in the States. He was p**sed off about his taxes.

How do you stop a madman in his own private aircraft?
And it doesn’t even have to be a mad private pilot in his own plane… he could charter a plane and highjack it. The US views this scenario very seriuosly.

There is no shortage of owner-pilot private aircraft in SA. Many farmers have them to get to town and back.
Imagine this scenario: a mentally unbalanced white farmer blames his financial woes on the new SA government, what realy tipped him over was the recent murder of white-supremist Eugene Terblanche by black farm workers, he reckons he can go out in a blaze of glory and damage the reputation of the government when the whole world has its eyes on SA by crashing his private plane into a stadium.
    Pretty scary, huh?
The lone madman is the most most difficult to stop.
I’ve been thinking about how to prevent something like this and all I can comen up with is a total ban on civilian traffic in a 50km radius of any stadium. Even then the reaction time neaded to enforce this would preclude any Gripen scrambling from a base 500km north of Johannesburg.
The only option is Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) units stationed near each stadium.
And then there is the risk of an accidntal shoot-down……
I don’t envy the guy whose job it is to protect SA airspace for the next few weeks.

I’m certain that all the Hawks have the gun pod… I’ve yet to see one without it, it’s virtualy a permanent fixture.

    True.
It’s just hard to imagine what South Africa could do about any airborne threat. I hope they’ve enlisted the help of some foreign air forces ‘cos they sure as hell don’t have the ability to do anything about it themselves.
Even a Crop-Sprayer loaded with Sarin Gas could nip in and out before anyone in authority even knows there’s something happening, never mind preventing it.
I’d like to think that there are a few RAF Tornado ADVs or French Mirage 2000s based nearby. But that is doubtful….
The nearest Air Force Base is Waterkloof in Pretoria, but it’s been closed for the last year for the runway to be resurfaced.
Next nearest available base is to use the facilities of Denel Aviation at Johanesburgs main airport… but I know for a fact that there are no fighters of any kind stationed there, even if temporarily.

Thanks. I’ve heard of the French adaptations in Algeria, good thinking from the troops in the field.
All the early ‘gunship’ choppers I’ve seen are essentialy field modifications… strapping weapons wherever they can find a place. This one looks like some serious design effort went into it, and I was suprised at the excellent workmanship.
Could it be that the Finns did the mod themselves? Or did they buy it like that straight from the USSR?
    You’re right about how do you define a gunship… that’s a difficult one….
    Any suggestions?

The Israeli authorities tried to stop South Africa’s post-apartheid government declassifying the documents
I find this hard to believe…. the new South African administration is very anti-Israel… the first democratically elected Foreign Minister (Pallo Jordan) in particular.
The ANC have a long history of close relations with the PLO… if the ANC governement uncovered any documents proving the apartheid era had relations with Israel over such an explosive (ha ha) issue as nuclear weapons they would have jumped at the chance to assist their ‘comrades’ in the PLO and further demonise the aparthied era.
Either there was no nuclear co-operation or the old apartheid government did an excellent job of destroying any evidence before capitulating (much more likely).

At the Military History Musuem in Johannessburg there is a Buccaneer on display…. if you crawl under it you when no-one is looking you can see the modifications done to the bomb-bay fo it to carry a single very large payload…. ie: a nuclear bomb.
