Yes but sitting next to the emergency exit door over the wing… they’re expected to be capable of removing the door in times of emergency…the airlines should pay them $160 dollars
I have to confess, this is always my concern, if somebody pays in advance and turns up on the day and is an 80-year old frail lady, what do they do then?
Singapore Airlines recently introduced it as well, so in good company I guess.
Most likely the next set of results will be good resulting in Willie and his crew getting their bonuses back while the workers will have been tricked into accepting pay reductions.
Good on BALPA for calling the bluff.
Actually Mr Walsh has announced he is working for no pay in July, as are some of his other executives. I knwo it’s only one month, but to give up 1/12th of your pay isn’t a bad statement.
Irish budget airline Ryanair will propose large pay cuts for the chairman of rival carrier Aer Lingus and his non-executive directors at the group’s annual meeting, Aer Lingus said on Thursday.
Ryanair, which owns nearly 30 percent of Aer Lingus, has a fractious relationship with the former state carrier, which it has twice tried to take over via hostile bids.
Ryanair is proposing that the pay of Aer Lingus chairman Colin Barrington be cut from EUR175,000 euros (USD$241,200) received in 2008 back to the EUR35,000 level earned by his predecessor in 2006.
The group is also proposing that the remuneration of non-executive directors be cut from EUR45,000 to EUR17,500, the level earned in 2006.

Well, they do own nearly 30% of a majorly loss making company, wouldn’t you want to see something done to curb the expenditure, especially from people who have arguably made mis-guided decisions?
Looks like it’s getting rocky…
BMI majority owner launches legal action against Lufthansa
Victoria Moores, London (20May09, 21:42 GMT, 221 words)German Star Alliance member Lufthansa’s takeover of BMI seems to be turning sour, after a company owned by BMI’s major shareholder Sir Michael Bishop launched High Court action against the German Star Alliance carrier.
In October last year BMI chairman Bishop exercised a put option, forcing Lufthansa to acquire his full shareholding of 50% plus one share in BMI, under a deal which was agreed in 1999. Bishop holds his stake through an investment vehicle called the BBW partnership. The acquisition will give existing shareholder Lufthansa 80% control of the UK carrier. SAS owns the remaining 20%.
But the pace of the takeover has been slow and, over recent days, UK business daily The Times has reported an emerging a tussle between the two sides. It claims the dispute centres on whether Bishop should be required to recapitalise BMI.
In a brief statement, Bishop’s company says: “The BBW Partnership, controlling shareholder of BMI, has today issued proceedings in the High Court to declare that BBW has fulfilled all the necessary regulatory requirements to complete the sale of BMI to Lufthansa, and seek that Lufthansa be required to complete the acquisition of the shares.”
BMI posted a huge preliminary post-tax loss of almost £100 million ($138 million) for the year ended 31 December 2008, on a slight rise in revenue to £1.04 billion.

I thought so but only did a simple search of Tu-154s at NCL on both sites…
Clearly an oversight, apologies! 😀
It’s ok, you obviously have youth on your side if you don’t remember them…not abad thing!
Some great pics there! Hopefully someone will have some from the mid 90’s..that livery really doesn’t ring any bells!
That was the only livery used by Balkan Bulgairan at that time….and unless someone knows differently I am fairly certain there was no such other operator. The pic I posted a link for was in 1992, and was the only livery used by the Airline at that time. Note also, it is a different airline altogether to the airline shown in Future Pilots links (that airline, BH Air is still in operation)

You’re thinking far too late… BH Air was not around in 1992. This I assume this what he needs…
When I was 7 I took my first flight on a Tu154 (a or b I have no idea!) from Newcastle to Bulgaria (Sofia, I think)
This would have been in 92. For some reason I remember the aircraft as having green on it??
Just curious, how long after then did Balkan continue? Is “Balkan Air” (or whatever variation of air they use..) still going?
Anybody got any pics of those particular 154s at Newcastle?
Ta 😎
No Balkan Air as was then no longer exists. It was the national carrier and operated under the official name of Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. It was 75% owned by an Isreali company called Zeevi, but went out of business because of mounting losses. Although the Government still owned 25%, they had a big argument with Zeevi about who had caused the financial position and so the company was allowed to fold.
Do you think the EU would allow LH to buy BMI in the firstplace, they are gaining a slow monopoly in the EU market.
They received clearance for the purchase last week, so yes is the answer.
Shame to see this one go. I had often looked at having a run down to LCY to experience the steep approach, but never got round to it. Not sure if FlyBe will take over this route? As already stated the train is proving popular now, and although the dash8 is steep approach approved i dont think FlyBe are certified as yet.
Flybe did operate their Q400s to LCY for a while. But they withdrew from LCY because the Airport charges are too high and do not fit with their business model. They have been very clear about this and will not return to the Airport in their current business guise…maybe one day, if they change strategic direction they may go back, but not in the near/mid term.
Not sure I agree. I would never dismiss a claim like that wthout at least asking the guy to show me what he was seeing and passing what I saw back to the flight crew.
1L.
Indeed. I’m not sure how long you’ve been flying for 1L, but you may have been preached at about Kegworth in your training. The passengers, and then cabin crew knew what was happening, but didn’t inform the cockpit, assuming the pilot knew what was happening….who consequently shut down the wrong engine! Even after noticing this fact, nobody told the cockpit.
CRM, gotta love it!
I more mean don’t show it as yet another ridiculous charge; just literally increase the fare. I really would much rather see that than yet another charge that makes people think ‘here we go again!’ I honestly believe the constant extra charges are going to backfire on Ryanair really quite spectacularly and perhaps the time really has come for Ryanair to think very carefully about how they run themselves. It would be easy to assume they’ve very much done that but I’m really not sure. Why any airline would seemingly want to give themselves so much negative publicity I don’t know.
Paul
I’m sure you’re right, there are probably some charges which don’t need to be shown as optional, i.e. anything which isn’t optional such as this.
I just did a quick search for the period outside of the current discount period, and there is no mention of it being a charge. I’m not sure if it is included within the fare or the taxes/charges, but it is simply not clear that you pay this charge, therefore for Joe Bloggs public you don’t even know you’re paying it.
I’m lead to believe it won’t apply to promotional fares.
That’s right. Yesterday I booked 2 one way fares for €3 each which included this charge within the promotional fare. Total cost for two one way fares was €16 (€8 per person) including the credit card fee.
From their website:
Can I pay the €5 fee instead of the £5 fee? That would be a small saving!!
Andrew
That’s what I do….save s few pence anyway…if you’re gonna book with a credit card (i.e. can’t book in Euros with switch/maestro) then book one way out and one way back.
Well… I do, because then they can’t advertise low fares, but these extra charges are getting utterly ridiculous.
Paul
Interestingly they have to include this charge on the first page, so it is actually shown in the fare because of European regulations.
That’s a pity, I know FlyMonarch has used this service and said it was fantastic.
I wonder if BA CityFlyer may give the route a try. I know they have looked at it in the past.
1L.
I used it a lot, and gained a lot of their frequent flier points as a result, not least because of LCY being a major client. But alas it’ll be back to Virgin Trains next time.
