Mrs Black can … she is a very scary woman! And besides my dad has said i’m not allowed an aviation based job like airport work as its for ” drop-outs”, <– that was his words not mine, so I’m not being told I can either be a doctor or accountant 🙁

LOL. He’s obviously thinking about certain roles, i.e. what he’s presented with at check-in (and thats not meant as offensive to anyone, simply that he’s fomred an opinion from that). He needs to know that there are a lot of roles that makethe industry work, and many of them earn far more than doctors and accountants. Incidently, the latter have major roles to play in the industry!

I’m interested in a course like this, but i’ve been told by the co-ordinator of sixth form that I am going to so sixth form! 🙁 I’m gutted, because now I actually go to sixth form as well but i’m not sure what to do!. And these courses sound very interesting and seems up my street, it’s not fair!

Whats stopping you doing a degree course in an aviation subject? I went to Loughborough University and did an BSc in Air Transport Management. The university is a Top 10 university with an outstanding record and number 2 to Cambridge for teaching quality. It also has a really good reputation among employers (more than I can say for Cranfield!!!).

I guess it depends what you want. If you purely want an ops post then perhaps a FE course may be better because you’re likely to gain real experience, if you want a management job, then a degree with genuine A-levels may be better, having said that there are good examples of people that have done it the other way around. I would also recommend that if you get the opportunity you do a placement year, just to gain real work experience.

With my degree I now work for one of the UKs leading Aviation Consultancies, but I know I wouldn’t have this job without a degree, albeit that I didn’t really need one in Aviation. Sometimes I regret doing ATM and wish I’d done a BA in Management or perhaps something in Economics.

I’ve had MANY flights with Air Southwest along the Manchester-Bristol-Plymouth route (I think probably 30-40 flights in the last 12 months on this route) They’re a great little airline, really friendly crews and the chocolate muffins they sell are lovely!!

Its a little unfair to say they’re not punctual as they are susceptible to certain weather problems, especially at Plymouth, rather than it being a result of aircraft or crew reliability. The former system of aircraft having to wait for each other at BRS was then disrupted. They have now rescheduled services to do away in most cases with this change of aircraft so the reliability has been improved.

I dont think many Irish people go to GIB. When we go to the other Spanish resorts arounds ALC and AGP etc all we do is give out about English people and the way the go on when on holidays so I think they can forget DUB and ORK its the last place most Irish people would think about going.

Yes I agree, what a load of rubbish this comment is. GIB offers another airport to serve the southern parts of Spain, that is the main point, it is not about passengers necessarily flying to Gibralter for a break, but instead going across the border into Spain. For some resorts it is actually the closest airport.

I’m not sure that they can fly to Ireland anyway, my understanding is that only the UK can be served in the EU, and then only be two designated carriers. I’m NOT certain on either of these points though, so don’t take them as gospel, I’m sure someone will know more than I do on it.

    .

The BM 737 incident is not an appropriate comparison – for one it is an incident where it was grossly evident what was wrong which meant even a layman was capable of forming a reasonably reliable judgement, and for two any input from cabin to flight deck wouldn’t be so easy to implement anyway these days because of the locked door policy

I know what you’re saying about the insecurities and personally I agree, don’t fly if you have those issues. But I still believe that in MEASURED amounts then there is nothing wrong with vigilence on the part of passengers, whether it be for security or safety. You haven’t said anything about Richard Reid, if you believe that passengers shouldn’t make judgments and decisions then there would have been another aircraft in the Atlantic. As humans we make mistakes and terrorists seek flaws in the system, so there is always a chance that someone or something will one day slip through, just as Richard Reid did.

With regards to the BM incident, my point was not about the incident per-se, it was about the fact that we always presume that the professionals have got our backs, and so we tend to keep quiet. It is worse when it is glaringly obvious what is wrong because then you REALLY do expect the professionals to see what you see, even though that is not always true, as applies in this case. Although the BM incident was a safety issue, the same could always be applied to security. With regards to locked door policy….crews can communicate you know, its called a telephone. :diablo:

Absolute non-sensical paranoia. You have no idea what might worry a passenger, and no skills in profiling likely threats. Would you challenge a guy walking down the street because he looked a bit shifty or because he’d got a foreign accent? Would you even call the cops about such a person in the streets, if they weren’t actually committing a crime? No, I didn’t think so. Mind your own business, ignore the other passengers, trust the security clearing of passengers to the professionals who do it day in day out, and sit back and enjoy the ride.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with raising GENUINE suspicions, lets face it the “shoe bomber” (Richard Reid) was only stopped from detonating his explosions because of wary passengers and crew ON BOARD the aircraft. The paranoia is an issue, in that it has got carried away, but I don’t think I agree with your ‘leave it to the professionals’ opinion because occasionally they do get it wrong.

This is a similar attitude to that taken by passengers and cabin crew on board the British Midland 737 that crashed at Kegworth, they all blatantly saw which engine was on fire and assumed the pilots knew too, but instead the pilots had made a mistake and shut down the wrong engine. It is beleived that had the cabin crew told the pilots then the aircraft may have made it to the runway. I think the same applies here because unfortunately safety nets go wrong and people are often aware of what is going on around them. What is unfortunate is that a cross section of society are too biggoted to be able to take a SENSIBLE view.

Well at least you didn’t do a AGP-MAN on him!!!! I think that there is a problem because in many, but not all cases this seems to be spreading to a certain cross section of our society. You did the right thing I think, you subtly asked questions to which there were logical answers, but if you look at the recent case of the AGP-MAN flight then it was ludicrous. I flew from Ibiza to Glasgow on September 12th 2001 and had NO concerns about stepping aboard a charter aircraft on this route because personally I don’t see why extremists would even bother looking at charter flights of this sort. Surely their aim would be major scheduled carriers on routes between countries which they view as the enemy? The problem is that the cross section of society that is getting carried away probably rarely steps on board the types of flights which I think would be targeted.

A friend of mine works for Monarch as cabin crew. When I spoke to her about the AGP-MAN incident I said “it just goes to show the type of people that fly between AGP and MAN”, funnily enough she expanded my sentance… “..with Monarch!” :dev2:

Manchester Airport still produce seasonal timetables, they just don’t print them anymore. Using the website is a cumbersome way of checking timetables, and so you may be better looking here and downloading the pdf…..

    Hope this helps

I’ll drop you a PM and explain how I know that they’re launching with a 737-800.

I assume you got the PM Gkirk? As you see, I am pretty reliably informed that it will be a 737-800. 😀

And I can confirm that you are speaking a load of rubbish 😀
The route is to be operated using a Boeing 767-300ER.
GSM will have 2 x 763s at GLA, and 1 at MAN.

I’ll drop you a PM and explain how I know that they’re launching with a 737-800.

BLK – BFS was among the first route slaunched by Jet2 from BLK, they have progressively increased frequency on the route, and I would assume that the e-mail about the route was purely highlighting that winter deals are now available.

They’re also dropping IOM – LTN, but increasing frequencies on IOM – LGW. They’re also adding LCY – MAD, not suprising though.

flying over geordie land nothing beats it!!!

I think some people need to fly to some new places :diablo:

I actually think in many cases the approaches to airports could be more interesting, not least because in many cases the terrain that makes the approach interesting also prevents departure over it…
