FI2006: Airbus details revamp with A350 XWB
    Farnborough (17Jul06, 12:54 GMT, 138 words)

Airbus has today unveiled its revamp of its A350 aircraft offering, detailing a new wider A350 XWB aircraft family to enter service from the middle of 2012.

The A350 XWB will comprise three aircraft:

    A 314-seat A350-900 to enter service mid-2012
    A 270-seat A350-800 to enter service 1Q 2013
    A 350-seat A350-1000 to enter service 1Q 2014
In addition the family will comprise an A350-900L for ultra long-range aircraft and an A350-900 freighter.

Airbus is seeking to offer two engine manufacturers for the aircraft family and has already secured agreements with Rolls-Royce to provide powerplants for all three A350 types.

Speaking during a media briefing during the Farnborough air show, chief operating officer John Leahey said: “It’s a totally new design, with new cabin, new wings, new systems and new engines.”

    More details to follow.

This Esperia thing looks like nonesense, the website is ridiculous and simply doesn’t work. I’ve not heard of ANYTHING in the industry and I get exposed to most of these start-ups etc. It has the look of a flight sim airline…i.e. a Virtual Airline, if anyone uses one of the websites related to this, maybe they could check it out? WHY oh WHY would a real airline have a picture displaying competitors in the top RH corner?? Also their timetable doesn’t stack up!! Its absolute bull****! I think its fair to say!

It is like a replica of the original time when MEA had to do similar and flee with their aircraft.

    It’s confirmed..

    CityJet confirms 23-strong RJ85 acquisition
Graham Dunn, London (13Jul06, 10:46 GMT, 240 words)

Air France-KLM’s Irish subsidiary CityJet has confirmed it has completed a deal to acquire 23 BAE Systems Avro RJ85 aircraft formerly operated for Northwest Airlines by regional carrier Mesaba.

The aircraft have been acquired from BAE Systems and US-based financial underwriters and securitisation specialists MBIA in an investment the airline values at $221 million.

The first of the aircraft, which can seat over 100 passengers, will enter the fleet in November and all 23 will be in service by the middle of next year.

CityJet currently operates a fleet of 19 British Aerospace 146-200/300s and says the new Avro RJs will replace its older aircraft – some of which have been in service with the carrier for more than 12 years.

The order also allows for some expansion of the fleet, but the airline has not given a precise breakdown of the aircraft earmarked for renewal and expansion.

“The phased introduction of the new aircraft from November 2006 represents significant investment not only in fleet replacement, but also in the company’s future,” the airline says.

“All the new deliveries are part of the same production family and with a younger airframe will deliver substantial savings on maintenance costs. The close relationship of the new aircraft type to the 146 currently operated allows the airline to dovetail its introduction into the existing fleet.”

Dublin-based CityJet carried 1.5 million passengers in 2005, generating an 18% increase in turnover to €254 million ($324 million).

Yeah I must mean the LR, either way what I’m getting at is whether or not the older 772ER’s have raked wing tips or not ?

I’m sure the shot will be on the news again all day as it’s a big story, maybe someone will see it and confirm what the type was ? Alternatively where I can look up what equipment was used on today’s Houston flight ?

No the ER version of the 200 does not have raked wingtips (the ER version of the 300 deos though, but thats because there was no previous ER until the inception of the 200LR/300ER programme). Anyway the wingspan on the 200 is identical to the 200ER.

Most of the US airliens have downloadable PDF timtables on their websites, in most cases they show the standard aircraft used, but that doesn’t mean that for some reason there wouldn’t have been a switch of aircraft to a 764 on the day. Alternatively, and most likely, knowing news reports, they didn’t want to hang about waiting for THE aircraft to depart, so instead they just take a random shot of an a/c.

What kind of facilties are at Carlisle, is it actually a commerical airport or is it more of a General Aviation spot? If so, it would require mega amounts of money to adapt the current facilties to make it into a proper airport.

I love Carlisle Airport, it is my home airport from my childhood and the company I work for have undertaken a lot of work related to this. It was recently sold to WA Developments (whose MD I used to serve in the pub I worked in in the 6th form) by Haughey Airports, who didn’t realise the work involved in developing the facility.

Basically the terminal is a very old fashioned building with, as I recall, soggy red carpets 😉 . Anyway, there are problems with the runway which would prevent Civil Aircraft from using it until it is repaired. Also needs to sort out the RESA. Basically, I hope it takes off, but its not an easy challenge.

In actual fact BLK is a closer and easier to access from the busiest parts of the Lake District, CAX (Carlisle) would serve the north of the county and SW Scotland, but still a good size market, albeit that the yields for the airlines will be poor.

This was mentioned in a recent Airliner World competition whereby entrants had to choose a name for their own domestic airline, and explain what their inaugrial route would be, and some person wrote in with this route suggestion. Can’t remember the exact details, but he claimed it would be good for people who wanted to visit the Lake District?

As for that Airliner World competition…well if I’d been involved in judging I wouldn’t have picked many of those at all!! Most of them had fatal flaws!

A Brazilian fellow from another forum seems to think that TAP and Air Canada may be involved in a rescue/takeover of Varig ?
    .[/B][/I]

TAP showed interest early on in the process to find a buyer, but they decided not to bid, and have showed no fresh interest in the build up to todays auction, so unless they have kept very quiet then its unlikely. It would be difficult to keep it quiet because various agencies would need to approve the offer, so it couldn’t be kept under wraps.

    CityJet to acquire 23 ex-Mesaba Avro RJ85s
Victoria Moores, London (10Jul06, 18:08 GMT, 137 words)

Air France-KLM subsidiary CityJet is expected to detail a planned acquisition of 23 Avro RJ85s, formerly operated for Northwest Airlines by regional carrier Mesaba, within a few days.

Irish-based CityJet operates 19 British Aerospace 146 regional jets, comprising 17 146-200s and two 146-300s.

A source close to the carrier says that CityJet will “formally confirm” its acquisition of 23 Avro RJ85s “later this week”.

The aircraft are being secured as a combination of leases and purchases, says the source, and will be used to “roll over” CityJet’s present 146 fleet.

Although the aircraft were all formerly part of Northwest regional affiliate Mesaba’s fleet, CityJet has not dealt directly with either Northwest or Mesaba.

It is unclear when the first aircraft will join CityJet’s fleet as the source says that “quite a lot” of modification work is needed.

By all accounts, dead as the Dodo.

Almost all their fleet is leased, so if nothing is done fairly soon, the aircraft will be scattered around the globe.

Not quite dead. They are still operating a small number of domestic routes. The latest is that last week the proposed purchaser failed to meet a guarantee figure of $75million to show they could raise the funding to purchase the airline, the purchaser was an employee group, TGV.

So once again the bankruptcy judge has set a new date for the auction of the airline, with that being tomorrow, the 12th and VarigLog (formerly the cargo arm of varig ironically) have come forward as bidders, which the creditors are hgappy with, the purchase price is $500million, although they too will have to raise the $75million financial guarantee. There is an issue with Variglog pruchasing the airline because they are majority owned by a US company, which causes problems with regards to the fact that the law in Brazil sets 20% as the upper limit of foreign ownership of a passenger carrier. However the Brazilian CAA has confirmed they probably would let it be sold anyway.

In the meantime it is Variglog that are providing unsecured loans to Varig to keep operating their reduced schedules. I think there is another bidder, a steel company, offering $600m for the company, but at the end of the day I doubt they’d go with that because at least Variglog is an airline and is supporting varig.

We will see the results of the auction tomorrow I guess.

However, threads that interest me on here are getting fewer and fewer, whilst the language skills of the some of the posters is proving difficult to understand at times.

    Granted! I agree here!

…those who have something more meaty to say may well get tired of sifting through rubbish and take their postings elsewhere

Also agreed, when I first used this forum there were loads of interesting topics, I’ve noticed even in the last 6 months a significant reduction!
