What you say could be true to a certain extent, especially about the two types of aircraft, however, all low-cost airlines need to expand their route networks rapidly in order to gain a better share of the market.

Not necessarily the case, especially in my view as these airlines are operating within the realms of contestability. Remember, the majority of these airlines operate without FFP’s and so they do not require a major network to satisfy customers, they are price and load factor driven. Within the realms of contestability the airlines would not expand fast at the expense of profit, each route should logically be profitable in its own right. If you also count in the stimulation effect of the LCCs, and the fact that many operate on wholly new routes then they are not expanding rapidly to gain market share. IF anything, they expand rapidly to reduce fixed costs, ie, the impact of having to pay rent on an office is less if you have 5 routes, than if you have 2, because the cost of the office is spread between more routes/passengers, thus helping to keep the fares down, and this comes down the the fact that they are driven by load factor (because they often offer more capacity than demand, and so use very low fares to stimulate demand or modal shift).

The Nigerians have been very good at trying these scams, although I think that is a little TOO obvious! Payment rhough Western Union should immediately raise flags. They had a scam a few years back when I was selling a horse (and they did it with cars too I believe) whereby they’d send you an e-mail in response to your advert saying that they want your horse, and they will pay in dollars through a bank transfer in advance. They always promised to pay more than the asking price and cover all shipping costs. HOWEVER once you had sent the item the transfer mysteriously got rejected/returned or something from your account, so by then you had sent your horse (or car) for nothing……people honestly got caught out by them! 10/10 for trying though!

Might inspire more confidence in their professionalism if they could spell the name of their destination

Actually I think using two Ns to become Mann is the Celtic way of spelling the islands’s name, and I know the head of state position is the Lord of Mann (actually the Queen), with 2 Ns. Given that the Channel Islanders tend to be very historically correct and use traditional words themselves then the use of two Ns does not suprise me.

It’s all a bit funny really RE: CDG and the language issue. It is generally accepted that pilots like to know what is going on around them because it adds another layer of safety, and so this counteracts the argument that ATC should be giving accurate instructions. There have been plenty of cases whereby ATC instructions have been wrong, mis-heard, or just not audible, take the Tenerife disaster for a start. Having to deal with two languages only increases the workload for the Air Traffic Controllers, and therefore increases the chances of incidents.

Interstingly Air France wanted their pilots to use English at CDG because they felt it was better for safety on the airfield, but it was the threat of a pilots strike that made the company back down and give-in to their employees. I think its a shame that in the name of safety the French pilots cannot use a standard language. If its only pride, then they would do well to remember that in shipping the primary language used is French, so they have one up on us there.

You just need to look at the Streamline incident at CDG to see the benefits of awareness!!!!!! One pilot killed, put down to ATC error, and rightfully so because conflicting commands had been given, but the Streamline pilots were nto aware of the instruction given the french pilots because it was doen in French!!

I’ve always been aware of the large number of northerners using this site..well people living in proximity to MAN anyway…assuming you want to call that north. I feel a bit mixed up, I’m from Cumbria originally (the proper north, Manchester should be referred to as The North Midlands, because otherwise there appears to be a gaping hole between the north and Scotland), then went to uni in the east midlands, before moving to love under the apprach to LHR, and now living back in Cheshire (so The North Midlands again). I guess its simple…all the best people live in the north 😉

I believe that some airlines allow their premium passengers to be in a slightly reclined position for T/O and Landing. It would be my guess that the main reason for being basically upright is to minimise the effects of items moving aorund the cabin in an accident, and most specifically falling items from overhead lockers.

There have been a numbre of accidents over time in which falling items from the lockers have caused significant injury and in some cases death (British Midland, Kegworth). By sitting upright the person is minimising the body exposed for such items to fall upon them and cause damage.

I would also guess that evacuation will be easier for the passenger if they are sat upright to begin with. In addition, most business class cabins still require passengers to pass by other seats in order to reach their own.

I’d love to see LBA – MAN, though it’d be a very short trip.

Yes, bearing in mind you can drive it in an hour, thats about the length of time you’d need to check-in, let alone the flight time, baggage reclaim etc. It can take longer than half an hour to LBA from the city, so add that to the check in time etc. WHY oh WHY would you want LBA-MAN???

Another Chornedsnorkack question/statement. I think I get the question, but I can’t help feeling the rest has come from a written piece, probably in some flight review…if this is the case make sure you’re referencing 😉

There are a wide variety of formats for premium seating, and in actual fact, many of the premium business products, which are lie flat (as opposed to fully flat) only take up a small amount under the seat infront so that the lie flat can be 170degrees. Furthemore the casements tend to be very large for these seat types, and so in many cases it may appear that your feet are just about to go under the seat in front of you, but in actual fact they are not under much more than seat moulding. Most airlines alreayd have foot rests on these seats because they do not have to be fully reclined, they have a variety of positions between upright and flat (or as flat as they go). There is no doubt that flying in any premium seat costs more, and the extra space required for this is one of the main reasons. But in many cases it is price that produces the selection of the seat, not the other way round, so I’m not sure that your questin has much value, because to answer it….. I’d much rather fly first class anytime, with fully flat seats and 78inch+ of personal space, but unfortunately cost tends to prohibit this. If cost were no issue I’d only ever fly first, with fully flat beds everytime. I think the same would be true of most people, and therefore I’m not sure you could expect too manyanswers from people saying they’d happily fly lie flat rather than fully flat if the airlines got rid of them.

I nearly posted this the other day when i saw it, but couldn’t be bothered at the time….

Channel Express to be rebranded as Jet2
Victoria Moores, London (30Dec05, 18:05 GMT, 164 words)

UK passenger and freight specialist Channel Express is to be rebranded, replacing its existing name with that of its sister budget carrier Jet2.

Channel Express operates Airbus A300B4s and Boeing 737-300s in Europe and the Middle East on behalf of express parcel companies, postal services, freight forwarders and other airlines. It also performs ad-hoc charter work.

But the carrier is to drop its name early in the New Year as parent company Dart Group focuses on developing its Jet2 branding.

A Jet2 spokeswoman says: “The Channel Express Air Services division of Dart Group will be rebranded to Jet2.com. It is effectively the way forward for the company because the bulk of the business is done under the Jet2.com branding anyhow.”

She adds that quite a lot of cargo work is already performed using Jet2 aircraft and says that the change will “clearly” give the brand even more exposure.

But the spokeswoman says that the change does “absolutely not” mark the shut-down of Channel Express.
