I heard a rumour that the air shows from 2012 on will be at RAF Lossiemouth…
did hear on local radio that the battle of britain airshow was indeed going to move north to lossie, but apparently not for 2 or 3 years yet. whilst im truly gutted having attended leuchars for over 20 years, i should be delighted to have a show in scotland at all. oh, and the fact it might be an hours drive instead of nearly 4 sounds good. sorry to be selfish. lol.;)
tornados
I think It was taken during Cool War… ๐
hi italy! im lucky enough to live quite close to a tornado base, and also get to see them practice bombing at the local range.they really are a joy to watch, and i will be sad to see them leave for england in the not too distant future. wont lie, cant help you much with the info you are after but wish you the best of luck with your project.;)
Will be delighted to see her there again regardless of whether she is on the ground or not. Every display of 558 is a bonus.
fair comment. should be thankful she is coming at all. mind you it was superb to see her arrive on the friday a couple of years ago with a typhon in tow. cant help but wonder if this is the last ever show. gutted.:(
sorry for delay in reply. nothing too boring for me regarding jets. me and the family will be at leuchars again this year and as usual will stay in dundee the night before. leaving sharp in the morn we have never had any major probs with traffic, though one year it took 3 hours back to dundee after the show. an almighty **** up that left the wife less than impressed lol. best regards.:D
cheers jay. very interesting times indeed. heres hoping the other two squadrons numbers chosen are 43 and 111. can still see posters of them lovely grey phantoms on my bedroom wall when i was a plooky kid. halcyon days lol.:D
thanks for that jay. its just im sure i read somewhere the entire typhoon fleet would end up at lossie but thought that might be a wee bit far fetched. also as i live near tain bombing range and their main users are the lossie tornados i cant help thinking it could spell the end for the range. on the other hand even though i think the leuchars typhoons are fighters am i right in saying that there are also ground attack capable typhoons in service with the raf just now?

Many thanks for the link. Lots of divided opinions! to be expected i suppose. been reading so many different reports and rumours but can anyone tell me is it only the typhoon squadrons from leuchars that will move north to lossie, or are there plans for more to be based there?
seriously??!!. Holy ****. thats a huge shock. Dont get me wrong im delighted lossie is staying open as its my local base but im gutted for leuchars. Been going to the airshow since i was a kid. Real shame for the area but hope the army moving there lessens the blow. I wonder if we will see an annual show at lossie now? Somehow with all this gloom and doom i doubt it very much.
The RAF and FAA each had a squadron of nine Harrier GR9 (of a total of about 40 GR9 built) and the RAF had seven squadrons each of about twelve Tornado GR4 plus an OCU of about twenty-two GR4 (of a total of 142 GR4 conversions); since the government was determined to scrap one aircraft type do you think the Britainโs forces would be better-off if the Tornado had been scrapped instead of the Harrier?
Weight of numbers wins every time i would have thought?
I don’t mind really. If any bases have to be closed, or work cut, I’d rather it was done in Scotland than England, since Scotland has had more than its fair share of political benefits over the years. I guess Scots are just going to have to accept that with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown (both Scottish!) gone, they are no longer going to be getting special benefits. Next step would be to reduce spending on Scotland by central government to a level where it matches their share of the population, so if they have 10% of the population they would get 10% of central government funding. If they don’t like that and threaten to become independent, then let them vote on it and leave ๐
frankly ridiculous. the biggest dependance on military presence for jobs in the uk is moray. is the farce over the kinloss closure and the nimrod scrapping debacle not a big enough kick in the teeth?
29 sqn are sending jets up north to cover for QRA as there is a lack of tranche capable jets up there
when you say up north, do you mean leuchars?
And of course, the fact that with a larger force it is far more able to sustain a reasonably large deployment (for today’s RAF standards) over a period of several years, can carry weaponry the other couldn’t, and the fact that Harriers have always had a small problem when (occasionally) the engine packs up (which I hasten to add over a certain sandy country famed for its narcotics production, which has become even nastier over the past year or two, could end up being extremely unpleasant for a pilot involved), would never have been considered…:)
Beautifully put!. Not a politician by any chance?
GR4s roaring over my house right now on the way to Tain bombing range, sincerely hope that aint gonna stop for good anytime soon. ps, hope the nv goggles they must have on werent to expensive!!
Regarding the sea tornado, not sure the budget would stretch to 100mm thick steel plate for the carrier deck!
Was terrified id hear something like that lol.
