Thank you Jane for your reply and sorry for the delay in responding I have been away from the forum for quite a while. The helmet was bought at Newark aero jumble in 2018, it is only when I got it home I noticed the names in it. It postdates operation grapple so is one from later in your father’s career. It is great to have a bit of the history behind it which I shall keep with it, and nice to know that I have a bit of Victor/Vulcan used kit. All the best Jdh

it’s not n H type mask. Looks to be an M type, very much a postwar piece of equipment.

Thanks for confirming I am not going potty, I did not think there were any Hunters active in the UK now. It was a great to see and was totally unexpected, though the rest of the family couldn’t see what was so exciting about it!

Today, 10th August 2:45pm what I think was a Hawker Hunter with underwing tanks flew over Huntingdon York. Are there any flying Hunters left? Or is my aircraft recognition a bit rusty?

Thank you both, that gives me a starting point. What I like about collecting is the ability to take you in unexpected directions. I have never read much about operation grapple, the above post was most interesting.

Air Ministry as promised had a table of interesting grips. Sadly I didn’t have enough cash on me so I didn’t come away with one. Though I did have a very interesting chat with him about their origins. I did find on another stall a grip, well part of, that was in my price bracket. The left hand horn from a Canberra yoke, just need to find the rest of it now! Was a good day out though and am looking forward to the next one.

What sort and price range will your grips be? Having recently got a sea Vixen grip I might like to add to it with some other types.

Thanks Martyn that would be great. Thanks also for the WD40 tip. it free the safety up instantly. It has also cleaned all the grime and gunk off the grip so no further cleaning will be needed, looks much tidier now.

Thanks for all those who have replied, it seems I am now the proud owner of a Vixen grip. Cannot be too many around still and for one to pop up in a general antiques shop shows stuff is still out there. For completeness here is the grip in question. Just needs a light clean and a suitable display stand making. What would the various switches and buttons be on this? I see the word safe at the top of presumably the trigger, is the part above it supposed to move to a fire position? If so it seems to be seized.

Thank you for your reply. I have been trying to think of other De Havilland types that the vendor might have got mixed up with, Sea Vixen would certainly fit the bill. As you say more interesting than a vampire in terms of rarity, 145 built IIRC. I will try to get a picture of it posted for confirmation, it is a lump of a stick must have had big hands those jet pilots!

Thank you all for your help, now that I have that list I will now attempt to fill it out. Andy your Tiger Moth is a beauty, I have flown in Tigers a few times and they are as you say heaps of fun!

Thank you both for confirming for me. I wondered as I haven’t been able to find a picture of an identical panel in a Tiger Moth, so wondered if might have been another Moth of some sort. Though I guess the flying Tigers all fly with such different cockpit fits it is not a surprise. The link provided by Propstrike is so similar I wonder if mine might be one of those. Thank you DE82EH, I am assuming from your screen name Tiger Moths are a passion, would you know instrument ref codes for appropriate ones to look out for?

I believe if the part was common to both the mkI and mkV series then it would have a 300 code as it would not have been changed from the earlier design. So depending what it is it would be normal to find parts on a mkV with the seemingly mkI part numbers.

I like those Master grips, something a bit different. May I ask what are you doing with all your grips as you seem to have a fair number of scrapyard recovered sticks, do you make any available for sale? I have fancied adding to my one 2040 grip since buying a good guide to spade grips from a chap at Newark aerojumble.
