Ok I now have the piece and the crackle paint obscures any marks if any. The approx size of the holes are shown on the photo. So top centre would take a turn and slip, bottom left an artificial horizon and bottom centre an altimeter. Does this configuration help towards a positive Id? I was looking at cockpit photos and wondered an Auster variant might be a possibility.
Thank you for all the suggestions so far. I had thought maybe link so that rules that out. I still do not have the piece in hand, once I do hopefully I will be able to add more information.
Biplane just now over York, tiger moth maybe?
Thanks Brian for continuing to try and resolve the identity. Yes I agree that is a very close match for the catch and rivet construction on my piece. So German it probably is.
Lunchtime today chipmunk over Huntington village church, did several circles round. Was low enough to see wing markings which I think read WK549. Wish it had been me up there as it has been a lovely day for flying!
The newly applied nose art looks fantastic.
Sorry for the late reply and thank you for continuing to help with this piece. I have now looked closely through a loupe at what I take to be traces of the original paint around the rivets. On the outer surface it is a sky or duck egg blue, I can only liken it to the colour I used to paint on the under surfaces of Bf109 airfix kits. The inner surface has a dull dark green paint. I know that is not a very good description and probably won’t help in tying nationality down.

Russian is something I had not considered, here are some details of the catch and hinge from the other side. They are both attached with nice flush rivets. ignore the black painted line near the latch that is a recent addition to the piece.

Some good details there. I like the VR Sgt pilot cleaning his car wearing a side arm. Evidence that aircrew did wear their issued revolvers.
Excellent accurate replicas of flying helmets and masks can be bought from Stephen Silburn of Sefton clothing. He trades as Izavailable on eBay and can be contacted through there. His work is top notch and can be seen in Hendon and Duxford amongst other places he also supplies film companies. I am in no way associated with Mr Silburn, other than being a happy owner of his B type helmet and D mask also a C type and E* mask He can also repair original items as he has worked on some of my original helmets. Whilst not inexpensive his work I feel is good value and will last a lifetime. Better than risking original very expensive items.
For battle of Britain you will also need a microphone for your mask, originals are rare and very expensive £500-£1000 if bought from specialist dealers. Replicas are available and come up from time to time on eBay. You will also need goggles. I do not know of any replica goggles that are correct for BoB period so you will have to get an original pair. There are several patterns that are correct for the period but my personal favourite is the MkIIIa a good pair currently costs around £250-300.
Hope some of this is of help and has not put you off!

With regards donating/loaning to museums. Museums that are accredited, most larger museums are. Will need to have a proper accessions policy by which they add to the collection. Once an item is donated and accessioned sole title to the object is with the museum. The original depositor relinquishes any ownership. It is then the museums to do with what they will. Display, store or dispose. Disposal procedures are quite long winded for accredited museums. They are obliged to try and pass on to another more relevant collection. Only when that has failed are they allowed to sell an item. In reality most museums just end up storing items not needed for display. They can of course get them out for interested parties, but unless you know of an item’s location how do you know where to ask? Lots of items just disappear from sight. As for long loans most museums now only take fixed term loans for specific exhibitions. This is because they cannot build long term exhibitions around objects that might get recalled by their owners. Nor can they store indefinitely objects they do not own that are not needed for display. Obviously most depositors hope and think their treasured items will go on immediate and permanent display. This sadly is not they case. I love museums and work in them, but I always advise people to think carefully before donating, as you cannot get it back again if circumstances change.
Today 4th Dec about 12:10 flying over Clifford’s tower in York. Dakota in invasion markings. Any idea which one? Nice that it is not too late in the year for a bit of spotting.
If you can get hold of a copy of vintage flying helmets by Mick Prodger you can see similar helmets on page 138. Basically great war flying kit was privately sourced from motoring outfitters and the like and there was no official pattern. I would say your helmet is of the type worn by German avaitors in WWI, the loop on top is fairly diagnostic. However the same basic type of helmet was continued to be made in the inter war period. Without firm proof it is possibly impossible to be 100% certain if this was ever used for flying. However paired with some nice goggles it would not look wrong for a WWI German display. It is a nice item.
looking for the rods to connect the chains up on my Hurricane control column. They are currently connected with garden wire! Do not have to be original parts just want something that will do the job beter than the wire.
Cheers,

I am trying to rebuild a pair of these. I am short of the rear tubes, i.e the one below the shade arm and the between the two side tubes. These appear as though they are the same as the standard anglepoises in that they do not have the extra circular friction washer that all the other tubes do on the Air Minstry type anglepoise. I also need all the aluminium spacing bars. There is two between the side tubes, one top one bottom with assosiated fixing screws/nuts. Then there are two bars near the bottom which the springs attach to that the original poster also needs.
I would be happy to just rebuild one lamp and use the other parts I have to trade for the bits I need if somebody has a quantity of the parts I do not and vice versa.
