Overflying your house to impress the girls… ever the fighter boy!
How you managed to use a Super Ikonta in a single-seater cockpit without a third hand or ending your days there and then in a smoking hole is beyond me. Having seen what you’ve posted in the past, though, I’m very glad you managed it. You posted a stunner a while back of Hurricanes leaving contrails taken from lower down in the formation. I’ll have to print it off and show my dad – his tales of watching contrails in 1940 (and parachutes the day it got a bit close) are what got me interested in the first place.
Now all you need is someone to squeeze a second seat into the Fury!

Not that it’s the slightest bit relevent to your “Grief” (and oh boy, does Wyvernfan’s sig fit the beast!) but I’m 99% sure it’s two of the crew from one Do17 and two from another – one came down at Cole End Wimbish and the other near the Thaxted road from Saffron Walden. Intriguingly, the “bucket squad” of the time may well have been the local undertakers rather than military personnel.

That is extremely interesing, Julian. I must confess with some shame that I’ve never looked up the references you gave me…

Nice shots – bit different. Number one would look great in B&W, while surely we could do a caption contest with number 5?

(and stop calling me Shirley!)
Nashio – Boston wings from Carnedd Dafydd…

Say what you want to see and someone may have one….
Howsabout the spade grip from V7497?

Fantastic! SWMBO heard a Merlin about 2.30 – she works at the end of an office furthest from the window – wonder who she heard?
Wish I’d known earlier – I’d have bunked off work for an ogle. I’m sure I’ll see plenty of SM520 in the Kidlington circuit, but not in such esteemed company…

Back then, I WAS a local!

I can believe that they’d be flown into somewhere other than Greenham Common (hey, with Welford just down the road, you’re talking first place for Brezhnev to nuke!). But Wethersfield?
Come on, the only thing flying into Wethersfield then was sparrows!

Could his death have been registered in England for some reason??
I can’t think of any good reason why he might be, but I’m FreeBMD’s coverage of 1940 is complete – a quick search at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ will tell you if there are any likely candidates.

That is bloomin’ stunning! Sadly, these pics are probably the closest any of us are going to get to seeing a Marauder in the air… I think I’ve bored you all with my soft spot for “Flak Bait” before, so I’ll shut up.
Adrian
I will endeavour to locate an example in my files.
What did I tell you? :diablo:

Just SO MEAN!! The one machine I so much wanted to fly, after 75 hours on Harts & Hinds, but the squadron re-equipped.
Furricane? So right – just take off the top wing & you’re converted.
Oh, but do remember the undercarriage!!
= Tim
Would you visit it, Tim, or would it be too maddening for words to see it and not be able to get a flight?
