That looks the crash report that you’d get from the people I posted, I think – just to give you an idea of what you might get (though the ones I’ve got are WW2). Not 100% sure, but I reckon I can pick up the crash site on Google Maps. Look at the curving field boundary, and the two diverging ones on the opposite side of the road, in the first photo.

Now look up Gosfield on GM (try not to get distracted by the ‘drome!). Take the Halstead Road North East out of the village, and look for an estate called Highlands. Just up the road from that, on the other side, you’ll find the field boundaries in the photo. What do you think?

With every tree in the photo bare? It’s not summer!

Sadly, that’s all I can add.

Incredible what you can start with a throwaway post! I’ve really enjoyed the development of this thread, and Mark12 has just put the icing on the cake. Now, that looks like the top and bottom of one stump, and the top of another… so where is the other one-and-a-half?

It’s hard to imagine a more British scenario, is it? Very last flight of an RAF Spitfire (we’ll ignore hindsight for a moment) ends on a cricket pitch, with the pilot being given a cuppa and a sandwich. Any more British, and he’d have taken a Union Flag off the pole on the way in whilst singing Jerusalem.

And Charlie, allow me to help you with that coat…

(where did they turn up, by the way?)

In the UK ‘GS’ may have been Great Sampford, unlikely venue for airshow I would have thought !

GS was indeed Great Sampford – but I think if there was an airshow there in 1950 it’s got to be Gutersloh – Gt Sampford was busy reverting to farmland by 1950.

So I was told by a gentleman in white overalls at Old Warden, Tim.

    Lovely looking bird, isn’t she?

Presumably you are aware of these guys?

I used them 18 months or so ago for two WW2 incidents, and was quite pleased with the cost and speed.

    Here’s what the Laws say:
    Law 8 (The wickets)

    1. Width and pitching
Two sets of wickets shall be pitched opposite and parallel to each other at a distance of
22 yards/20.12 m between the centres of the two middle stumps. Each set shall be 9 in/22.86 cm wide and shall consist of three wooden stumps with two wooden bails on top. See Appendix A.

    2. Size of stumps
The tops of the stumps shall be 28 in/71.1 cm above the playing surface and shall be dome shaped except for the bail grooves. The portion of a stump above the playing surface shall be cylindrical apart from the domed top, with circular section of diameter not less than 1⅜ in/3.49 cm nor more than 1½ in/3.81 cm. See Appendix A.

I’ll let someone better than me work out how that fits. Ah yes, Mark 12 just has!

Now… We seem to have missed one vitally important factor here…

    What was the score?

At the other end of the country (Wales), do I recall correctly that a SQUADRON of Lancasters was flown under the Menai Bridges as part of the preparation for a low level raid? Nettleton and Augsburg come to mind, but I am dredging round in the depths of my mind here!

That must have been some sight and sound…

Collison between T-33 and Thundersteak – 3 crewmen killed –

That’s great, Paul – thank you very much! With that I can find the accident reports – if the price for 1950s ones is a reasonable as the price for the 1940s ones I got, they’ll be well worth it. One of my uncle’s saw the collision, and my brother ploughed up a small relay from the T33 (knowing him, he was ploughing very slowly looking for bits!) that I now have.

Apologies for the delay in replying – my time online has been a bit limited these last few days.

What would modern maritime historians have thought if HMS Victory had been chopped up for firewood after the Battle of Trafalgar?

    Someone might have painted it…

(Admiral Harvey’s broadside from the Temeraire was what ensured Victory wasn’t boarded by the dastardly Frenchies)

If I may ride in on the coat-tails of this thread… Andy, your book sounds the very thing for unravelling the collision witnessed by one of my uncles.

Two aircraft collided in the Wethersfield circuit, with one crashing at Cornish Hall End (possibly described as Finchingfield, being in the same parish). I’d guess 1950s, one may have been a T-33, and I believe that both crashed with fatal results. If you can find anything, given the scantness of information there,l I’d be very grateful!

    Hi Mark,

If you get no takers, see if your local Air Cadets would be interested. I don’t have space to store so every 18 months or so all my old plane mags to to the ATC, who love them. Seems a shame to get rid of something nice, I know, but if someone else will appreciate them…

One from the Department of Vague Memories…

I’m fairly certain that there’s a plaque on Bangor Pier to an airman lost in 1940. As for who… sorry, not a clue!

Some smashing stuff there, and a friend has been able to identify some of his postcard collection using these as well – so good stuff all round. Thank you for posting them!

If you happen to spot the Goodden Dragonfly, I’d love to see even a half-decent image of it…

No-one so far has twigged that photo 47(ish) of the British aircraft might even have a forum member in it?:diablo:

Oh boy, have some of the those aircraft crashed through the ugly tree!
