I can’t afford that job!!! lol!

A very salient point! The “cultural heritage” sector – museums and the like – is seriously underfunded, so pay is poor and job security may be an unknown even in important aspects such as conservation of exhibits.

Next time anyone fancies knocking the job that the staff do at DX, perhaps they should consider what they are getting for their efforts?

On behalf of the rest of the readers of this thread I would just like to say GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Most interesting – my chemistry has improved, and I can get a lead on PlusGas. Thank you all!

I think the Desoutter Aircraft Company was run by 2 Brothers

And, just to tie you in with Phil’s (:D :dev2: 😀 :diablo: Phil) post, after one of them was injured in a flying accident they turned to building prosthetic limbs. I think you can guess where this is going now…

As an old stick-in-the-mud, I’ve used Plusgas Formula A for years.
It’s easiest to get as an aerosol but I prefer the oilcan shape with a spout. I had to go around a good half a dozen shops to find it last time I wanted some.

Oooooh! Where? Where? That stuff knocks WD40 into a cocked hat! Could you let me know where you eventually found it please?

(not that I need any, but it’d be nice to have some next time I do!)

IIRC there are original Upkeep mines at RAFM, Elvo and at Brenzett….any more around?

    TT

There must be dozens (OK, maybe a dozen or so) somewhere – a number were retrieved from Reculver in the 1970s, in the marsh behind the beach where they had been bounced up into the lagoon from seawards, and at least one more was retrieved from the opposite side of the towers in the 1990s. If only I’d known when I was beachcombing there in 1991-3…

Bio-de-ruster… Hmmm, it’s not black and sweet-smelling is it?

The old trick for removing rust (as opposed to freeing objects) was a strong solution of treacle (that’s right, thick, black and in tins labelled “Tate & Lyle”).

My chemistry is too far in my past to describe the exact mechanism, but something in molasses chelates iron salts in solution – ie removes rust from the outside of it. I suspect it works on other metals too, but I’ve never tried it.

From various people I have talked to I think the key to freeing things up is to use liberal qualities of patience, whatever else you use on them. Give it time to work its way in.

    Is that somewhere between a T.7 and a T.8? 🙂

Spot on – I forget whether it is a T7 with an F8 tail or an F8 with a T7 nose, but it’s MB’s unofficial designation. See page 11.

    Martin Baker’s, perhaps?

I don’t know how many are flying any more, but given how close Oxford is to Chalgrove unless there were dozens of them in the air I’d be willing to put money on it being one of MBs. Unfortunately it was high enough up, against a light sky, that it was grey – so I couldn’t tell whether it was the silver of the black one.

Put a smile on my mush, though…

Meteor! Too high to see which one, as it was doing its best to blend in with the sky, but given the proximity to Chalgrove surely got to be a T7 1/2?

Fear not, ’twas determined to use that at the first available opportunity, not a true insult. I just don’t use smilies, brings back painful memories on here…..

My Crown Graphic is too heavy to post. It also takes a week to open the damned thing.

I’ll have to remember that one, it’s a goodie (except when aimed at me of course).

As for the Crown Graphic, I’ve just Googled it and have salivated all over my keyboard. What a glorious thing!

I would have thought that blindingly obvious to all but one of any given village.

OWWWWW! Walked right into that, didn’t I…

I could send one of my Box Brownies round – at 8 shots to a roll there’d be only a third of the likelihood of it going AWOL of a 24-shot job.

    On second thoughts, maybe not.

Now, I LIKE the sound of a 5×4 B&W camera (cut film or plate? Wet or dry collodion?) but what on earth has it to do with the rest of the thread?

Blimey – that’s going to turn a few heads on the A55! I’d like to see the insurance claims …”when I was overtaken by a Shackleton in the outside lane, at which point I piled into the back of the person in front who’d braked because he thought he was hallucinating”…:D

Unless the Disco has been washed on too hot a cycle, it also gives you a rather better idea of just how much bulk there is in one of these things than standing next to one on it’s legs. Good job there’s some big sheds at Llandwrog!

Though I have to admit I thought the camera had disappeared into obscurity in the days of BO (Before Ollie).

Good point, Damien. A forum search (with the “search” button on the toolbar) suggests that it was roundabouts the middle of 2004 when the disposable was last seen. Allowing for different phraseology, that still leaves quite a gap before Ollie joined in October 2005…

Heaven only knows why he thought he had it but there.

By the way, I think I’m going to have to buy a film scanner to get those Box Brownie pics up – the friend who was going to do it has got sidetracked… It was fun until the microscopes at work all went digital…

Well you weren’t at the event that makes Kev (and a number of others too) so angry.
I was and I know why it still angers him (and them).

What should have been a moment of peace and remembrance almost blown apart by a certain persons inane chattering.

    A.

Many of us on this forum weren’t there, and to anyone like me who wasn’t there – especially if they do not see Andy’s post – the reactions that Ollie gets from some people look like park drunks shouting abuse at passers-by.

As someone who wasn’t there, and have never met any of the protagonists, I can’t comment on whether or not the attacks are justifiable. However those factors probably make me representative of most of the forum in the sense that they weren’t there and haven’t met any of you either! Carrying ills from the real world onto this forum means that you are shouting things that a few people recognise for what they are, and to the thousands of other people reading just look like random savagery.

Please – think about what it makes you look like in the eyes of people who don’t know before you steam into people! Do you really want to look like a total a*se across the whole forum? If you can’t sort it out, don’t turn the forum into a sh*tflinging contest. It doesn’t make you look big, and it doesn’t make the forum look big or clever either.

I’m sorry if I’ve upset anyone’s feelings by posting this, but I just don’t think this is the right place for abusing people, whatever the reason.
