To my minces, the twin-engined “Beaufighter” in piccy 10 looks like a Lockheed of some description. I am not an expert by any means, but with that deep fuselage I reckon we are looking at Ventura/Harpoon or perhaps a Hudson. Don’t think it’s British at all.
Interesting point about the RATO Marauder – does it look to anyone else to have a very stumpy nose cone, or should I see an optician?
Adrian
Wow, didn’t expect the undercarriage to look like that when it was down! Beautiful aircraft, shame i won’t be at legends
Ah well, see, that’s what it uses for dive brakes!
Adrian
…’ he’ wasn’t at all removing any Michael 🙂 – a simple senior moment, I did mean Captain BILL Lancaster.
Best wishes,
SoG
Ooops! Never mind, through this thread we have now found both Bill AND Burt Lancaster!
Don’t forget Star Ariel…
Adrian
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell,
Star Dust was the British South American Airways Lancastrian that vanished on a flight to (Peru? Chile?) in 1948, leaving only the mysterious final Morse message “STENDEC”.
Finally discovered about 5 years ago – almost certainly it had been flying into a headwind so was much less into it’s journey than it should have been. As a result when it began to let down into it’s destination it flew into the Andes and flew into the back wall of a corrie. The resulting fall of rock and snow buried the remains and hid them from searching planes. She was only discovered when remains started thawing out of a glacier. As for STENDEC, it seems that it is only dot or a dash in the wrong place away from several more plausible messages, so was probably down to morse mutilation.
Burt Lancaster? I think he may be removing the Michael…
Adrian
Slight correction – NOTices to AirMen. And presumably also to AirwoMen. 😉
Ooops…
Moral of story: Engage brain before opening cakehole…
Adrian
😮 😮 😮
NOTice Air Ministry… no doubt someone who uses them will tell you where they are posted! I don’t get a lot of use out of them, ‘cos I is ground-based!
Adrian
I know we’ve all been messing about with the ‘Will it be at Legends?’ comment for some time, but in all seriousness, IF the Vimy can be brought to Duxford in time to even just sit in the static (pride of place in the centre of the line-up of course), I think that particular aeroplane would turn out to be THE star of the show.
And if it does a flyby EVERYONE will have a chance at a photo – even if you have to load up the old Box Brownie with film! Those guys are either mad or daft to cross the Atlantic in something that flies at the speed of a catatonic sloth – but well done to them all the same!
Adrian
Surprise? Would that be the little-known R. J. Mitchell designed Supermarine Surprise?………. :diablo:
Adrian
E’s at it again!
I don’t know whether someone has noticed my occasional “gripes” about being put off my digging by interesting aeroplanes flying over Port Meadow & Wolvercote, but all Saturday morning a silver pre-war RAF-schemed Tiger Moth was flying back and forth across Wolvercote – also spotted by my Girlfriend (would you believe that SHE’S the Biggles collector? :diablo: ) at Marston that day, and again on Sunday morning when – yes – I was allotmenteering.
If it’s you, and you’ve spotted me moaning,
THANK YOU!
I’ve enjoyed spotting you greatly! Now if anyone out there with a Spitfire, Hurricane, P51 etc….
Adrian
Bruce,
This is the part that will be with me at Legends.
A very interesting solution to balancing the de Havilland propeller.
I think I understand it but if you know the ‘full SP’ please educate us.
Mark
You mean you dug the remains of a Fairey Battle out of a French field just for THAT? :diablo:
Adrian
According to people I have met who are working on it, it wont meet our expectations.
QUOTE]
You mean it will be WORSE than “Biggles”?
Adrian
Can’t have been many hairyplanes with a Merlin* that were that bad…
Adrian
*edited because I am a pillock and should have said MerlinS!
Cheers Mr Holmes. I’d willingly have bought you the next pint.
Bye.
Moggy
Can anyone ask for a better epitaph? Wouldn’t mind that one myself (though not just yet thank you)
Sadly missed.
Adrian
so they were canibalised for spares to keep PIGY going. Ugly machines, they look like a Bedford truck with wings.
Is that reg a comment on the Skyvans looks, I wonder? They certainly aren’t beautiful!
Phil, there is at least one B2 still about –

and if you look at this one, one will be flying at Old Warden this weekend.

However I am fairly certain that the vertical surfaces were squarer than that.
There seem to be a LOT of biplanes around Oxford at the mo, mostly just too far off to get a positive ID – is there a Biggles Flies Undone event or something?
Adrian
Am I right in thinking that a Squadron Leader Middleton led a squadron of Lancasters under the Brittania Bridge and Menai Bridge in the Menai Straits? Part of the preparation for a low level raid on Augsburg? Or has my brain been left boiling for too long again?
