Bae Lostock families day, mid nineties:

PA474 does a flypast and one woman pipes up:

    “What’s that?”

    “It’s a Lancaster bomber, love”

“Oh yeah, …so where do our missiles go on that then?”

Another good one was some vague anorak clad buffoon at Woodford in 1992:

We were watching him and generally taking the piss anyway when the Red Arrows do a bomb burst from behind and over the crowd line.

Man sh*ts himself and thrashes his arms wildly spilling coffee over the maximum surface area of his body possible, then starts thrashing round again trying to get the scalding hot coffee off his shirt……

    Ow!

Barton ITT airshow 1984 where is first saw the Mighty Vulcan!!!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!!!

I actually went to Blackpool airshow in 1976 as well and can’t remember that really!!!!! I can vaguely remember the Red Arrows though…..

Not really and airshow, but I also saw Concorde come to Liverpool Airport in 1977 or 8…… It did a touch and go and was truly amazing…………

Yes, I know of the incident. Not much use, but it is also mentioned in a book (out of print now) that I once got from the library in Wigan.

I can’t remeber the name of the book , but I will be going back up in a few weeks so I will try to get it out. In the book it adds that these are available to see at ‘exceptionally low tides’.

It’s amzing that no one has tried to recover them really is’nt it?

Then again, they could be in the state of the ‘Lancasters buried in the quarry’, – once aircraft that just the outlines now exist of and a few corroded bits of metal….. at least twenty years on…….

If these were seen in the sea in 1984, that means they could have ditched anythimg between 39-45 years before. Add onother twenty years in the sea and sadly they may all be corroded to bits by now……..

No, No, this was in the nineties!!!!!! Not long ago!!!!! I know about the ex indian af machines, this was not one, it was too recent………

Quite an interesting subject for a thread actually….. does anyone know of any preserved aircraft that have flown when they have not supposed to be flown……..?

I know there were rumours of an EE lightning taking to the air in the us a few years back.

A few years ago in Flypast, there was an interesting story about the crew of a jet who were flying over somewhere in the far east, when they positively identified a B24 Liberator flying the same heading and a little bit below them…….. The aircraft would not answer the radio and had no working transponder……

    Any more information on this???

Well I don’t think anyone should knock the Halifax at Elvington….. it is representative of a type and should be regarded as a bone fide aircraft…. indeed are’nt a lot of airworthy spitfires e.t.c. more or less new builds??? they are made up in the majority, of new parts and no one complains about those….!

No one says “oh there’s that replica spitfire SL??? again” do they, to us and airshow goers in general, it’s still a spitfire is’nt it?

I do agree though that they could have done a better job of the Halifax. If you look at the ‘plexiglass’ it is obvious that it is in fact very cheap and thin plastic….

I know the props they fitted were used to reduce weight, butwhy on earth did they just not make the structure stonger in order to fit real ones……? Also, why is she not fitted out internally properly? I think they shoudl make it as representative as possible, inside and out……. elsan included!!!!

Best Buccaneer display I saw was at Woodford in 1991 or 2. After take off he immediately did a max rate roll to port with extremelt marginal wing clearance!

    Amazing.

Thanks for your replies……. Sorry to be a pain…… I am aware that it may not have happened… I am just intrigued as to how a number of sources seem to state the same thing………

What about the other two Vulcans? Anyone know anything about those???

Oh well, it’s about time that it’s being repainted!!!!!!! It has been in a bad way for a long time and should really have been a priority……..

There is also a Hunter at Duxford that needs painting badly (or there was last time I was there last year anyway), has this been done yet, or indeed is this part of the IWM or just parked there waiting to be moved on???????

Where did this guy fly from? How often did this happen in WWII, Allies defecting to Axis?

Before he died, my grandad said that he saw a mechanic steal (he could’nt remember what type) an aircraft from Thrapston airfield and claims that they were all told that he had crashed in the sea?

Could this be one in the same case? If not, does anyone know anything about this?

    Any information would be appreciated.

Well actually, R5858, S-Sugar at Hendon was ordered and laid down as a Manchester, being converted very early in production to a Lancaster…..

Well when I went inside in the early nineties, she was a lot more complete than that with none of the instruments missing.

I think that this Vulcan needs to be scrapped in full to be honest. She is too far gone for anything else.

    What a shame.
